Essential

Notes:

Suggested Work Schedule:
Task 1
Familiarisation with task.
Read the ISO and BS support documentation.
Sketch a body diagram.
Estimate loads, friction and torque imposed on the escalator.

Task 2
Calculate the gear Stress, loads, reactions and dimensions.
Use the data table to assist the gear design.
Assess suitability of preliminary gear design.

Task 3
Refine gear design (if necessary).

The following constraints apply to the design:

The escalator is 11 m long with an elevation of 6.5 m;
The steps are pin-jointed to chains which pass over sprockets at
each end with a pitch diameter of 250 mm;
The escalator has 28 steps, each 800 mm wide;
The escalator moves at 0.8 m/second;
Assume 2 people on each step, each weighing 75 kg;
Must design for an overload of 50%;
The shafts must be manufactured either from carbon steel or alloy
steel;
The drive motor output speed is 200 rpm. Step & chain weight
27kg

Design
steps In order to design the gearbox, you will need to following
these steps:
Estimate the loads imposed on the escalator;
Calculate the torque required from the gearbox;
Calculate the gear forces;
Determine the face width of the gears;
Assess whether the preliminary estimates for the gear size are
satisfactory;
Suggest any modifications to the gear design;
