This pertains to our Clean Healthy Safe and Friendly (CHSF) environment program. In
the last school year 2015-16, it was observed that the entry and distribution of soda drinks
especially the Mountain Dew Soda drinks citrus flavor bottled in neon green and now the
orange color bottle was patronized by majority of our students and staff without knowing the
hidden danger of drinking these poisonous drinks. Together with this scenario, the
accumulation of waste bottles of these products is also increasing (please see attached photo
of waste bottles in MRF).
In this connection, we may ask your comments, suggestions and approval to ban the
entry of Mountain Dew Soda drinks (neon green and orange color) in all university
canteen/stores including the selling and distribution of these products due to the following
reasons:
1. Health resons:
Mountain Dew and other sodas contain a toxic chemical known as
brominated vegetable oil (BVO). BVO is a toxic chemical that is banned in
many countries because it competes with iodine for receptor sites in the body,
which can lead to hypothyroidism, autoimmune disease, and cancer. The
main ingredient, bromine, is a poisonous, corrosive chemical, linked to major
organ system damage, birth defects, growth problems, schizophrenia, and
hearing loss. "There's flame retardant in your Mountain Dew. That soda with
the lime-green hue (and other citrus-flavored bubbly pops) won't keep your
insides fireproof, but it does contain brominated vegetable oil, a patented
flame retardant for plastics that has been banned in foods throughout Europe
and in Japan. (http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/bvo.asp)
Bromine and/or forms of bromine are used in pesticides, disinfectants, flame
retardants, as a gasoline additive, and for swimming pool maintenance.
2. Environmental reasons:
A mountain dew bottles (neon green and orange) is made from styrene and
PVC plastics whish is not recyclables.
This plastics is not collected by the Barangay collectors because dumping in
the sanitary landfill is not allowed.
Junk shops do not buy this type of plastic bottles since it is not recyclable
unlike with other types of plastics while upcycling is not in place in our
community, which means final destination is not known.
it will remain and will accumulate in the MRF as wastes.
Thank you very much for your kind consideration. Together we can make this Marian
community healthy and safe for all.
Respectfully yours,
Mrs. Me L. Galate
