lipsit de mldiere i schimbare? WHY is my verse so barren of new pride So far from variation or quick change? Why with the time do I not glance aside To new-found methods and to compounds strange? Why write I still all one, ever the same, And keep invention in a noted weed, That every word doth almost tell my name, Showing their birth, and where they did proceed? O! know, sweet love, I always write of you, And you and love are still my argument; So all my best is dressing old words new, Spending again what is already spent: For as the sun is daily new and old, So is my love still telling what is told.
77 - Thy glass will show thee how thy beauties wear
Oglinga-i spune farmecul cum trece,
cadranul picur minute moarte
THY glass will show thee how thy beauties wear Thy dial how thy precious minutes waste; These vacant leaves thy minds imprint will bear, And of this book this learning mayst thou taste. The wrinkles which thy glass will truly show Of mouthed graves will give thee memory; Thou by thy dials shady stealth mayst know Times thievish progress to eternity. Look! what thy memory cannot contain, Commit to these waste blanks, and thou shalt find Those children nursed, deliverd from thy brain, To take a new acquaintance of thy mind. These offices, so oft as thou wilt look, Shall profit thee and much enrich thy book.
78 - So oft have I invokd thee for my Muse
Ca muza mea te-am invocat, s-mi fie prielnic sfetnic dar mi nrui mersul, cnd alii uzurpndu-mi locul mie n preajma ta ajung s-i sune versul. Privirea ta, fcnd din mut un gure,
i netiinei arip i pune,
ilustrei pene i-a adaos, iure de graii i sporit-nelepciune. Fii mndru doar de versul meu. Cu gura el hran din fptura ta mnnc, tu, altor barzi doar le crpeti msura, mie mi-adaugi frumusee nc... Eti toat arta mea i versu-mi faci din gnd prostit, pricepere de vraci. SO oft have I invokd thee for my Muse And found such fair assistance in my verse As every alien pen hath got my use And under thee their poesy disperse. Thine eyes, that taught the dumb on high to sing And heavy ignorance aloft to fly, Have added feathers to the learneds wing And given grace a double majesty. Yet be most proud of that which I compile, Whose influence is thine, and born of thee: In others works thou dost but mend the style, And arts with thy sweet graces graced be; But thou art all my art, and dost advance As high as learning my rude ignorance.
79 -Whilst I alone did call upon thy aid
Cnd reazim te visam, tiam c scrisul din harul tu i trage-al lui noroc dar azi n vers port toamna i plictisul i muza altora le las loc. Cred c-neleg, iubite, vrednic este de pene mai vestite al tu har, poetul ce n vers te povestete ce-i prad, i ofer-apoi n dar. Virtute-i d, el ce virtute fur,
i doar a ta e frumuseea lui,
cum i-a luat-o de pe fa, pur, nimic nu-i d mai mult ce-n tine nu-i ! Se cade s nu-i mulumeti de fel. Eti platnicul, datornicul e el ! WHILST I alone did call upon thy aid My verse alone had all thy gentle grace; But now my gracious numbers are decayd, And my sick muse doth give an other place. I grant, sweet love, thy lovely argument Deserves the travail of a worthier pen; Yet what of thee thy poet doth invent He robs thee of, and pays it thee again. He lends thee virtue, and he stole that word From thy behaviour; beauty doth he give, And found it in thy cheek; he can afford No praise to thee but what in thee doth live. Then thank him not for that which he doth say, Since what he owes thee thou thyself dost pay.
80 - O! how I faint when I of you do write
Mi-e slab mna cnd de tine scriu, un spirit nou cnd te slujete. Simpla mea scris irosita-i, tiu si-mi simt legat, de te cheam, limba. i-e slava-ntindere de ape, grea purtnd umile i semee pnze; neruinat de mic, luntrea mea sub galionul lui, puinu-i strnse... Surpat n val abia m mai ridic, adncuri fr de adnc el bate; apa ce-nghite luntrea-mi de nimic pe el l duce n singurtate. Nu-i caut vin, nu m-nfrnase firea, tot dragostea mi-a fost i prbuirea...
O! HOW I faint when I of you do write
Knowing a better spirit doth use your name, And in the praise thereof spends all his might, To make me tongue-tied, speaking of your fame! But since your worthwide as the ocean is, The humble as the proudest sail doth bear, My saucy bark, inferior far to his, On your broad main doth wilfully appear. Your shallowest help will hold me up afloat, Whilst he upon your soundless deep doth ride; Or, being wrackd, I am a worthless boat, He of tall building and of goodly pride: Then if he thrive and I be cast away, The worst was this;my love was my decay.
