1 Intended use

2 Safety

The TopVent DHV unit is used for heating, the TopVent

DKV unit for heating and/or cooling of high spaces in
recirculation operation.
The intended use also includes the adherence to installation,
commissioning, operating and maintenance instructions as
stipulated by the manufacturer (operating instructions
handbook), as well as allowing for possible errors and
hazards.

2.1 Explanation of symbols and instructions

1.1 Authorised operators

Only authorised experts who are familiar with Hoval recirculation units and their risks are permitted to install, operate and
maintain them. The operating instructions are intended for
English speaking engineers and technicians as well as experts
in the building, heating and ventilation trades.
1.2 Operating modes
TopVent DHV/DKV units can be operated in the following
modes:
Recirculation operation at low fan speed (Y switch)
Recirculation operation at high fan speed ( switch)
Standby
Off
The application limits are as follows:
max. operating pressure ___________ 800 kPa (8 bar)
max. heating medium temperature __ 120 C
max. supply air temperature _________ 60 C
max. ambient temperature __________ 40 C
Any other use is considered not in accordance with regulations. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any
damage resulting from improper use.
The units in standard design are not suitable for use in explosive atmospheres, in high humidity areas or in rooms with a
high dust load.
1.3 Hazards
Despite all precautionary measures taken, certain hazards still
exist, some of which are not so obvious, e.g.:
danger whilst working on the electrical system
when working on the unit heater, parts (e.g. tools) could fall
down
danger from hot water whilst working on the hot water
supply

Caution
This symbol can be found by all safety instructions where a
danger to life and limb exists. Observe these instructions and
be careful! The valid Laws and Safety and Accident Prevention
Regulations must also be observed.
Attention
This marks instructions, regulations and working methods that
are of particular importance for the avoidance of damage to
the unit.
Advice
This identifies places where details are given of the economical
use of the unit as well as special tips.
2.2 Operating safety
TopVent recirculation units are built to the latest technology
and are safe to operate. Nevertheless, certain risks do exist if
they are inappropriately installed or improperly used. Therefore:
Operating instructions, as well as safety precautions, should
be read and strictly observed before unpacking, installing,
commissioning and servicing the unit.
The operating instructions should be readily available.
The unit is to be installed, operated and maintained by
authorised experts only.
The local Safety and Accident Prevention Regulations apply
when operating the unit; these must be observed and
strictly adhered to.
Strictly observe all instructions and warning labels.
2.3 Maintenance safety
All maintenance and repair work to be carried out by
authorised experts or service personnel only. Beware of
certain risks, e.g. when working on the roof or on electrical
systems.
Before undertaking maintenance work or correcting faults,
the unit must be switched off at the mains and protected
against reconnection with a lock.
Before undertaking maintenance work, switch the isolation
switch (option) to Off.
Only the fan is switched off with the isolation switch.
Options, e.g. the VarioTronic, can still be live!
When working on the recirculation unit, beware of
unprotected, sharp sheet metal edges.
Immediately replace any damaged or missing instruction
and warning labels as well as safety warnings.
Do not remove, cover or paint over any instruction or
warning labels.

Function and Construction

After maintenance work reassemble all dismantled safety

devices correctly.
Unauthorised alterations or changes to the unit can be
detrimental to the safety of individuals or the unit itself and
should therefore not take place.
Spare parts must conform with technical requirements. It is
therefore recommended that only original Hoval spare parts
be used.
2.4 Operating instruction advice
According to the Accident Prevention Regulations in certain
countries the user of the system must advise the operating
personnel of all possible risks and preventive measures. This
can be done with operating directions. Operating instructions
are helpful in this case. In addition to emphasising important
points, these instructions should contain local regulations for
accident prevention and environmental protection.

3 Function and construction

TopVent recirculation units are used for heating and cooling
high spaces and are an excellent choice for decentralised
applications in industry and commerce, production halls,
warehouses, sports centres, multipurpose halls and
supermarkets.
The units are available in two different designs:
Recirculation unit heater TopVent DHV
Recirculation unit heater/cooler TopVent DKV
Each recirculation unit is available in two different sizes, each
with a 2-speed fan as standard. In addition, three different
heat exchanger types are available for each unit size, so that
altogether twelve different thermal outputs can be selected.
The units are installed under the ceiling or roof. Thus, as with
all Hoval units of the high level ventilation family, undesirable
temperature stratification is reduced. Supply air is introduced
draught-free from above. Valuable space is saved thanks to
the decentralised arrangement at high level; ducting is not
required.
The recirculation units consist of
the heating or cooling section
(with a copper tube/aluminium fin battery and a quiet and
maintenance-free axial fan with sickle-shaped blades; in
the recirculation unit heater/cooler DKV a condensate
separator with drain connection is installed in addition to
the heat exchanger) and
the vortex air distributor
(with concentric outlet nozzle and adjustable guide vanes).
The two components are bolted together and can be
dismantled, even after installation. All unit components are
compatible with each other.
With the TopVent DKV heating and cooling is possible
with one unit.

The modular and functional design meets all

requirements of modern heating technology:

uniform temperature in the occupied area at low energy

consumption
low investment thanks to a large floor area reached
more comfort thanks to draught-free air distribution
high operating reliability thanks to decentralised units
low electricity and heating costs thanks to quick
heating-up and minimum temperature stratification
easy and quick installation thanks to delivery of fully
assembled units

Fig. 1: Components of the TopVent recirculation units

Function and Construction

3.1 Heating section

Casing 1
All casing parts are made of Aluzinc sheet steel. This is sheet
steel coated with an alloy of aluminium and zinc. Thus the
casing is particularly resistant against corrosion and inherently
strong.
For fastening to the ceiling the units come with four M10
captive nuts with hexagon head screws and washers.
Heat exchanger 2
The heat exchanger consists of copper tubes with aluminium
fins. Depending on the required output, three different coil
types are available for each unit size.
Special coil designs for hot water or steam as well as electric
heating coils are available on demand.
Fan 3
The compact, space-saving fan unit consists of a two-speed
three-phase motor with rigid sickle-shaped aluminium blades
and integrated protective grille. The fan is maintenance-free
and runs quietly.
For protection against overload, a thermal contactor is
installed in the motor winding.

(which can also be retrofitted). This is either done manually

by means of a potentiometer or automatically with the
electronic control Hoval VarioTronic.

Advantages of the
patented Hoval vortex air distributor
automatically adjustable, thus always optimum air
distribution even under varying operating conditions
reliable data for easy system design without risk
minimum temperature stratification
adjustable for different conditions
large floor area reached

Terminal box 4
The terminal box is built into the side wall and has a lid of
impact resistant plastic. It serves for connection of the supply
voltage for the fan motor with thermal contactors and of
accessories such as filter pressure switch and mixed air box
actuator.

3.2 Vortex air distributor 5

The vortex air distributor consists of a self-supporting casing
of Aluzinc sheet steel with sound attenuation cowl,
concentric outlet nozzle and adjustable guide vanes. It is the
crucial part of Hoval recirculation units and provides supply
air at various temperatures, draught-free and evenly into the
occupied area.
With the outlet nozzle and adjustable guide vanes the air
twist and vortex motion can be controlled. The setting of the
vanes depends on the air flow rate, the mounting height and
the temperature difference between supply air and room air.
Thus air is injected into the room either vertically downward
(no twist), conically (slight twist) or horizontally (maximum
twist). This guarantees that the occupied area is covered
thoroughly and draught-free even under extreme operating
conditions. Extensive tests have shown that, with increasing
twist, the Hoval vortex air distributor has a strong induction
effect; i.e. the supply air is mixed thoroughly with the room
air. Thus the whole room is effectively reached, temperature
stratification is minimised and energy costs are greatly
reduced.
Air distribution is either fixed at commissioning or, if
operating conditions vary greatly, controlled via an actuator
