Learning and Teaching Approaches

The course is linked with course School Experience 4, and is assessed

following the completion of this placement. There will be lectures in
preparation for School Experience prior to and during the placement, and
in preparation for the assessment of the course. The School Experience
remit leads the students through the practical elements of the placement
which will provide the basis for the critical reflection required by the
assessment. Students are encouraged to communicate with each other
online and during meetings in the university to develop their
understanding of theory/practice links.
5.

Support and Student Welfare

The role of all tutors within the school of education is to support and
facilitate the learning of all students on the course, both individually and in
groups. Students should be able to clarify issues relating to the course by
contacting their SE tutor, the course convener or the year co-ordinator.
Forums on moodle may also be used to post questions for clarification.
6.

Attendance and Participation

Normal university regulations regarding attendance, and informing staff of

absence while on placement, apply. Please refer to the programme
handbook and university website for details. Absences should be logged
on MyCampus and, where possible, tutors should be informed by email.
Therefore, every absence from school placement is deemed to be
significant and thus all should be self-reported on MyCampus.
7.

Assessment and feedback

Assessment for the courses comprises:

a. one summative assessment task
b. one formative task
(a) Summative assessment
The summative assessment will examine Learning Outcomes from the
course and will consist of a portfolio of professional practice based on the
Year 4 placement which evidences critical understanding of professional
knowledge and understanding, professional skills and abilities and
professional values and commitments as outlined by the Standard for
Provisional Registration (SPR). The portfolio will comprise:
a 2,500-word, critically reflective essay addressing the SPR, supported by
a portfolio of appropriate materials selected from the SE record. Full
details of the assignment will be available separately on moodle.
Submission date: 30 March 2017. A hard copy of complete assignment
should be submitted; in addition, the reflective essay should be submitted
through Turnitin.
(b) Formative assessment
One formative task will directly prepare students for the summative
task.
BEd4/EPP/2015-16

Students will work in groups to discuss progress on the portfolio when in

university following placement.
Provisional grades should be available by 4 th May 2017. Feedback may be
collected by students following this date. Information about this will be
sent by email.
The criteria for the assignment are the learning outcomes of the course
(see section 3 above). The assignment will be graded in accordance with
Schedule A of the Universitys Code of Assessment, available at
http://www.gla.ac.uk/media/media_205314_en.pdf
.
The
minimum
requirement for the award of credit is Grade D. Students who do not
achieve a pass grade on this submission (ie if they are graded E, F, G, H,
or CW for either or both of the courses) will be given an opportunity to
retrieve before the examination board in early June 2017. All students are
responsible for checking their own grades on MyCampus and following the
instructions on moodle if they have fail grades.
8.

Learning Resources

Students should refer to the moodle sites for previous courses to access
resources and recommended materials which will inform their assessment.
Students will be expected to access appropriate materials and resources
from the library, including online journals. An online guide to using the
