Status of Education

The three initiatives of the UN Global Education Initiative stand for

what every school system in the world should be following. These initiatives
are; put every child in school, improve the quality of learning, and foster
global citizenship will be discussed in this report. The UN Global Education
Initiative defines these initiatives in a pretty self-explanatory way. Put every
child in school means exactly that. The UN wants students to stay in school
and finish (Global). To improve the quality of learning, they want more
qualified teachers and a larger outcome for the students (Global). The
definition of fostering global civilization is that education must be
transformative and valuable. It is more than just math and reading (Global). I
will now link these initiatives to the current education system of Morocco.
Morocco is severely lacking in several areas of education such as
dropout rates and lack of attendance. The lacking in several areas can be
partially blamed by multiple languages in the environment and lack of
resources. To start with, Morocco is far behind on the initiative that states to
put every child in school. According to the website of U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID), Morocco has a primary-aged enrollment
rate of 95%. This rate seems wonderful! However, the percentage of
students from middle school that make it to high school drops to 53%. It gets
lower still when taking the percentage of first graders that will graduate. This

number is at an incredibly low 15% (Education). The initiative does not just
want students to start school, it wants them to finish. This puts Morocco far
behind due to their incredibly high dropout rates.

This chart is a small piece of the full chart from

Nations Encyclopedia. It ranks 183 countries in order
by highest dropout rates. As you can see, Morocco is
ranked 49th based on data from 2007.

Another area that we are seeing severe deficits in Morocco is with

literacy rates. The initiatives foster global citizenship and also quality of
learning are seriously lacking in Morocco because of their low attendance.
According to UNICEF, the attendance rates of females in secondary
education is 36.1 percent (Statistics). The attendance rate for males is also
incredibly low. The male attendance rate for secondary education is at 38.7
percent (Statistics). The initiatives put into place by the UN are clearly not
doing well here because of the fact that the attendance rate is lower than
50%.
