Martin Luther

King, Jr.
Alpha Phi Alpha is the first Greek-letter organization created by African-American students, and it was
founded at Cornell University in
December 1906. In 1956, for its 50th
anniversary, fraternity members gathered at Cornell, where King delivered
a keynote address on social justice
and integration.

Empowering
the Sisters

College students have been drawn to

fraternity house parties for decades.
Even more so since sorority organizations have placed an alcohol ban
in their houses. In recent years there
has been a heated debate on how to
address sexual assaults on campuses
across the country. Many which are
occurring at fraternity house parties.
A study financed by the Department
of Justice found that women who frequently attend fraternity parties are
more likely than others to be sexually
assaulted Female students are questioning that rule, declaring that woman would be empowered by lifting the
ban on alcohol in sorority houses. This
would not eliminate sexual violence
on campus but would benefit women
because sororities would have the
ability to set off-limits areas to decide
what drinks are served.

An interesting case study exists at

Dartmouth, where Sigma Delta, a
sorority with no national affiliation,
does hold parties with alcohol in its
well-kept house. Events feature female
bartenders, female members at the
doors and women designated to re-

main sober and monitor the scene.

By not allowing alcohol in their

houses, sororities save money on their
insurance policies. It is estimated
that polices cost $25 to $50 a year
per sorority member whereas fraternity members pay about $160 per
member. According to the Fraternity
Executives Association, this is largely
because of accidents fueled by alcohol.

advocates and experts in sexual violence
doubt that allowing alcohol at sororities would significantly reduce
campus incidents. Instead, there are
arguments for improving educational
programs provided by the universities themselves aimed at addressing
sexual violence.

Be proactive when going out for a

drink. Surround yourself with friends
who care for you and will look out for
your well-being.
