Course Outline Assignment

Course Analysis
Course Name: Introduction to Electrical Theory
Course Length: 11 Weeks
Course Type: Blended / Hybrid (3 Face-to-Face Sessions)
Average Student:
Grades 9-12. Students must be reliable, safety conscious and capable of
working in a disciplined environment. This is most important due to the
dangers of working with electricity.
Content Analysis:

Students should be familiar with concepts presented in General Math,

Algebra 1 and Physical Science. (Learned in 7th and 8th grade)
Students should be able to use basic computer software such as Internet
Browser, Microsoft Office Suite, etc. (Learned in 8th grade Computer
Science)
Students should be able to use basic tools such as screwdriver, pliers,
utility knife, etc. (Assumed General Knowledge)

General Goals:

Learn basic electronic and electrical terminology.

Learn to analyze simple circuitry using Ohms law.
Identify basic electronics components and use them to construct simple
projects.
Learn to successfully construct basic circuits.
Learn to distinguish between electrical energy and power.

Enhancing Learning:
The Electrical Introductory course will introduce the student to the electrical
trade which will allow the student to make an informed decision about
pursuing a career in the electrical field. This course will provide the student
with the skills and knowledge to advance to the Electrical Technology
Program.

General Course Assessments

Multiple Choice Self-Tests and Exam: These assessments will measure
general conceptual information found on the lower levels of Blooms
Taxonomy. This includes being able to state definitions, key concepts, and
other foundational information.
Summative: This assessment of creating a safety check list will demonstrate
that students know the rules for personal and group safety while working with
electricity. This includes certain precautions that need to be observed to
protect the safety and health of the student.
Performance: These assessments will have the students create a simple series
circuit and a simple parallel circuit. This will demonstrate that students
understand the relationship between voltage and current in different circuits.
Multimeter Assignment: This assessment will have the students demonstrate
and explain the use of the multimeter while analyzing series and parallel
circuits. The student will collect and record data accurately using consistent
measuring and recording techniques.
Ohms Law Assignments: These assessments will have the student solve
Ohms Law equations. This will demonstrate that the student has an
understanding of Ohms Law and can relate the theory to observations.
Schematic Assignment: This assessment will have the student create a
schematic of an open circuit and a shorted circuit. This will demonstrate the
difference between the two circuits and illustrate the potential for an
electrical hazard.
Blog: This assessment will have the student to differentiate between open,
closed and shorted circuits.
Discussion Boards Participation: These assessments will demonstrate that
the student brought original thought and perspective to class discussions .
This will help the instructor make sure students are not falling behind on their
work as well as giving the instructor essential feedback so that they can
interject if needed.
Feedback Surveys (2 total): These surveys have been placed throughout the
course to help the instructor gather feedback on areas that could use
improvement.
