What is Tourism and why has it

Grown?

Learning Objectives:
C You can define tourism and describe how it has increased
B You can suggest reasons for this growth
A Suggest and explain reasons for this growth

What is Tourism?
Write your own definition of what you think
tourism is.
Compare your definition with your neighbours
According to the World Tourism Organisation (WTO),
tourism involves activities that require travel from
home and staying away from home for at least one
night. This not only includes people going on holiday,
but also people taking business trips and/or visiting
friends and relatives.

Our new unit is all about the study of tourism, its

growth, the different types and its impacts on a
variety of places around the world.

The Growth of Tourism

Your graph should

look something like
this
Write a paragraph to
describe what your
graph shows.

Why do you think tourism has grown so

much?
Think of at least three reasons why you
think tourism has grown in the last 50-60
years.

Try to give an
overview of the
trends without
giving a blow by
blow account of
every decade.
Use figures to add
detail and try to
include
comparative
statements to
show that you
have interpreted
the data.

Picture Clues
Your teacher has given you a series of clues as
to the major reasons for this increase in tourism
Work with your group to fill in the first column of
the sheets provided by giving the reason for the
increase
The So What? Rule:
Now apply the So What? rule to the reasons you
have come up with and fill in the third column of your
table by explaining how each of your reasons
increase the amount of tourism

Reasons for the Growth of Tourism

No.

Reason for Growth

So What?

Paid holiday the amount of paid annual leave has gradually

increased (e.g. 28 days on average in the UK).

So people have more time to go away

as tourists

Wages pay has increased faster than inflation

So people can afford more holidays.

Television travel programmes have raised peoples

expectations and awareness of different destinations

And therefore will make people want

to go and visit some of these places

The Internet has helped people to search for cheaper travel

deals themselves, rather than use travel agencies.

They can therefore afford to go on

holiday more

Ageing society increased life expectancy and early

retirement

Means more older people can travel.

Transport better road and air travel developed in the 20th

century

Meaning it is quicker and easier to

travel making holidays more likely

Air fares low-cost airlines and independent travel agents

offer cheaper flights

Making holidays more affordable to a

wider population

Travel companies provide a huge range of package holidays

and other organised trips

Making travel much easier

Better infrastructure many countries have invested in

infrastructure for tourism (e.g. better hotels)

Which makes the area more attractive

to visitors
