ThefollowingSketchofStalybridgeistakenwithverylittlealterationfromButterworths
HistoricalAccountofStalybridge,thecopyrightofwhichlapsedin1884.
STALYBRIDGEisoneofthelargestofthosetownsowingtheiroriginalmostwhollytothe
cottonmanufacture.Itisseatedinadeepvalley,extendingonbothsidesoftheriverTame,
whichherdividesLancashirefromCheshire.TheancientbridgeovertheTamegavethe
townitsname.
ThedistrictofStayleywasformerly,andityetinsomedegree,awildandromanticregion,
interspersedwithboldhillsandtheMoorishgulliesseparatingthem.Fromthesethensolitary
glens,pouredthestreamsoftheTame,throughwoodsalmostimpenetrableexcepttothe
halfcivilizedhuntsman.Suchwastherudeandsavagestateofthistractonbothsidesofthe
TamewhentheRomansconstructedaroadfromtheirstationatStockporttothatat
Castleshaw,inSaddleworth.Thisroad(knownasStayleyStreet)passedthefootofthat
rockthenknownasCastleHill.
Stalybridgewaslongfamousforweavers,dyersandpressersofwoollencloth.In1748the
principalemploymentofthe140inhabitantswasthespinningofworstedyarnsforthe
Nottinghamhosiers,andthecottontradeprevailedalittle,initsdomesticstage.
In1763thepopulationwas500.Thefirstcottonmillwaserectedin1776byapersonnamed
Hall,inwhichcardingwasperformedbywaterpowerandspinningbyhand.Theyear1776
ismemorablealsoasbeingtheyearinwhichtheoldepiscopalchapelwasbuild.Thevillage
thenconsistedofagroupofhousesalongthelanebetwixtthebridgeandRassbottom,and
anumberofhousesstraggledonCockerHill.
In1794,Dr.AikindescribedStalybridgeasaverylargeandextensivevillage,ina
continuedstreetofhalfamile,wellpaved,thehouseswellbuilt,someofstone,butthe
greaterpartofbrick.AttheperiodoftheDoctorshighlyfavourablesketch,thehouseswere
about220,andthepopulationnumberedabout1,100.
From1776to1801,Messrs.Hallremainedtheonlycottonmanufacturerswhocarriedonthe
processinamill.About1796thefirststeamengineerectedhere(oneofsixhorsepower)
wasplacedinthismill.

Theintroductionofimprovedmachineryintothemanufactureofcottonencounteredviolent
opposition,andtosuchapitchwerethethreatsofthepopulaceandtheapprehensionsof
themillownerraised,thatthedoorswerelockednightandday,andthemillresembleda
garrison.Timeservedtodissipatethesealarms,andtoreconciletheworkerstotheprogress
ofmechanicalimprovements.
Intheyear1901Messrs.Lees,Cheetham&Co.erectedanengineof40horsepowerto
worktheircottonmill.In1814therewereelevenfactories,andin1818thisnumberhad
increasedtosixteen.Duringthefirsttwentyyearsofthenineteenthcenturytheexcellent
positionofStalybridgeinitsadvantagesoffuelandfacilitiesofconveyancewereduly
appreciated,sothatthetowngrewlargerandlargereveryyearthestreetsmultiplied
rapidlyhousesstartedintoexistenceasifbymagicextensivefactoriesrearedtheirmassive
wallsandthesiteofthewoodsofStayleybecameaflourishingtown.
In1823thespinningmills,inclusiveofloommills,were26andin1825thespinning
factoriesaloneamountedto22.In1841thenumberofcottonmillsinthetownandvicinity
was32,andin1825therewere29steamenginesand6waterwheelsengagedinthecotton
industry.In1831thenumberofsteamengineshadincreasedto38,totalhorsepowerjust
over1,000.

newdwellingswereerected.Intheyear1831thetownconsistedchieflyofthestreets
extendingfromStamfordStreettoGrosvenorStreet,comprising2,357inhabitedhouses.
From1833to1837thetownincreasedrapidly,andanumberofnewstreetswereformed,
especiallyontheDukinfieldside.
APublicMeetingoftheinhabitantsheldOctober22nd,1827,resolvedtoapplyforanActof
Parliament,inordertoenabletheratepayerstoappointCommissionersforthedirectingof
thepoliceaffairs,etc.AnActforthesepurposeswasobtainedMay9,1828,andprovides
thattheratepayersshallannuallyelectonthefirstWednesdayinMay,twentyone
ratepayers,whooccupypremisesoftheyearlyvalueof50,tobeCommissionersfor
cleansing,lighting,andregulatingthetown,erectingaTownHall,providingaMarket,etc.
ThisonceobscurevillagewasconstitutedaMarketTownbythePoliceAct..
Theyear1836isnotablebyreasonofthefactthataStatisticalSurveywasthenmadeby
theManchesterStatisticalSociety.TheNumberofdwellingsexaminedwas3,313,ofwhich
2,587werehouses,670sittingrooms,56cellars,and39publichousesandbeershops.
Thenumberofpersonsinhabitinghouseswas12,345,rooms,670,andcellars,56.Thetotal
populationwasestimatedat17,200.*Itwasfoundthat4,484personscouldreadandwrite,
whilst4,188couldreadonly.Theheadsoffamiliesbelongingtothe
ChurchofEnglandwere
