worthwhilecontrastingthepresentschoolsofStalybridgewiththoseoffiftyorsixtyyears
ago.
OnthepassingoftheFactoryAct,bywhichyoungchildrenwerepermittedtoworkintheMill
asHalfTimersworkingonehalfthedayandattendingschooltheotheritbecame
necessarytoprovidefortheirschooling.Astherewerethenonly"DameSchools"andafew
PrivateSchoolswhichwouldnotreceivethesechildren,theemployersoflabourorthe
FactoryMastersestablishedtheFactoryBritishSchoolattheTemperanceHall,KayStreet.
ThiswasopenedasanElementarySchoolundertheauspicesoftheB.&F.BibleSociety,
Mr.Geo.ThomasbeingtheMaster.TheonlyotherSchoolsinthedistrictotherthanPrivate
SchoolswereSt.John's,Dukinfield,andSt.Paul's,Stayley.
AttheheadofthePrivateSchoolswas"Smith's,"areallygoodSchool,providingan
excellenteducation,particularlyinarithmeticandpenmanship.Mr.SmithRobert,to
distinguishhimfromaMr.ThomasSmithcarriedonhisSchoolattheMount(Wherethe
CooperativeStoresnoware)untilhisdeath.HehadformerlybeenatChapelStreet
Schools,andwassucceededtherebytheThomasSmith,previouslynamed,whocarriedon
theSchoolforsometime.
Thentherewas"Pollinder's"inShepleyStreet,inalargeroomorroomsoverthehouseson
therighthandsidegoingdownthestreet,theroomsbeingreachedbyanoutsidestairatthe
back.
AMr.Jas.LawtonhadaSchoolundertheoldCongregationalChapelinMelbourneStreet.
HewassucceededbyMr.Wm.Sutcliffe,whoeventuallybecamePostmaster.Therewasa
Mr.ListerIves,too,whocarriedonhisSchoolwheretheRelievingOfficenowis,in
GrosvenorStreet.SomeyearslaterMr.T.HoylesucceededfairlywellattheoldMechanics'
Institution,BennettStreet,andlaterinaroom,reachedbysteps,behindtheFreemason's
Arms.
Mr.JamesHolmeskeptSchoolformanyyearsatthePrimitiveMethodist's,CanalStreet.
OtherSchoolswere,atCockerHill,keptbyMr.T.LawtonandinWakefieldRoad,byMr.T.
Firth.Forseveralwinters,thelatterhadaNightSchoolinaroomoverablacksmith'sshopin

andalsotaughtattheMechanics'Institutionatnight,finallyremovingtoHyde.
Subsequently,SchoolswerecommencedasPublicElementarySchoolsunderCommittees,
atOldSt.George'sWesleyan(Canalstreet)HolyTrinity(CastleHall)St.Peter's(Roman
Catholic)ChristChurchandnewSt.George's(TheHague).HobHillwasopenedinthe
meantime,byMrs.Leech,ofGorseHall.
Themostnoted'outside'SchoolswereSunderlands(Ashton),Faulkners(Cockbrook),and
Barlows(Micklehurst).Barlowhadasmuchifnotmore,reputeasaFortuneTellerthanasa
Schoolmaster.AdiscipleofhiswasaMr.S.Rudd,wholivedandtaughtformanyyearsin
HuddersfieldRoad.
