    There were few school options in Stalybridge fifty years prior, with most children attending "Dame Schools" or private schools. When the Factory Act passed, requiring children to split time between work and school, the factory masters established the British School to accommodate the "half-timers". In addition to a few other religious schools, private schools like Smith's and Pollinder's provided the main education. Over subsequent years and decades, more schools opened as the population grew, some started as public elementary schools under committees.     In these days when the Education Question is so prominently before the public, it may be worth while contrasting the present schools of Stalybridge with those of fifty or sixty years ago. On the passing of the Factory Act, by which young children were permitted to work in the Mill as Half­Timers ­­ working one half the day and attending school the other ­­ it became necessary to provide for their schooling. As there were then only "Dame Schools" and a few Private Schools which would not receive these children, the employers of labour or the Factory Masters established the Factory British School at the Temperance Hall, Kay Street. This was opened as an Elementary School under the auspices of the B. & F. Bible Society, Mr. Geo. Thomas being the Master. The only other Schools in the district other than Private Schools were St. John's, Dukinfield, and St. Paul's, Stayley.     InthesedayswhentheEducationQuestionissoprominentlybeforethepublic,itmaybe
    worthwhilecontrastingthepresentschoolsofStalybridgewiththoseoffiftyorsixtyyears
    ago.

    OnthepassingoftheFactoryAct,bywhichyoungchildrenwerepermittedtoworkintheMill
    asHalfTimersworkingonehalfthedayandattendingschooltheotheritbecame
    necessarytoprovidefortheirschooling.Astherewerethenonly"DameSchools"andafew
    PrivateSchoolswhichwouldnotreceivethesechildren,theemployersoflabourorthe
    FactoryMastersestablishedtheFactoryBritishSchoolattheTemperanceHall,KayStreet.
    ThiswasopenedasanElementarySchoolundertheauspicesoftheB.&F.BibleSociety,
    Mr.Geo.ThomasbeingtheMaster.TheonlyotherSchoolsinthedistrictotherthanPrivate
    SchoolswereSt.John's,Dukinfield,andSt.Paul's,Stayley.

    AttheheadofthePrivateSchoolswas"Smith's,"areallygoodSchool,providingan
    excellenteducation,particularlyinarithmeticandpenmanship.Mr.SmithRobert,to
    distinguishhimfromaMr.ThomasSmithcarriedonhisSchoolattheMount(Wherethe
    CooperativeStoresnoware)untilhisdeath.HehadformerlybeenatChapelStreet
    Schools,andwassucceededtherebytheThomasSmith,previouslynamed,whocarriedon
    theSchoolforsometime.

    Thentherewas"Pollinder's"inShepleyStreet,inalargeroomorroomsoverthehouseson
    therighthandsidegoingdownthestreet,theroomsbeingreachedbyanoutsidestairatthe
    back.

    AMr.Jas.LawtonhadaSchoolundertheoldCongregationalChapelinMelbourneStreet.
    HewassucceededbyMr.Wm.Sutcliffe,whoeventuallybecamePostmaster.Therewasa
    Mr.ListerIves,too,whocarriedonhisSchoolwheretheRelievingOfficenowis,in
    GrosvenorStreet.SomeyearslaterMr.T.HoylesucceededfairlywellattheoldMechanics'
    Institution,BennettStreet,andlaterinaroom,reachedbysteps,behindtheFreemason's
    Arms.

    Mr.JamesHolmeskeptSchoolformanyyearsatthePrimitiveMethodist's,CanalStreet.
    OtherSchoolswere,atCockerHill,keptbyMr.T.LawtonandinWakefieldRoad,byMr.T.
    Firth.Forseveralwinters,thelatterhadaNightSchoolinaroomoverablacksmith'sshopin

    atOldSt.George'sWesleyan(Canalstreet)HolyTrinity(CastleHall)St.Peter's(Roman
    Catholic)ChristChurchandnewSt.George's(TheHague).HobHillwasopenedinthe
    meantime,byMrs.Leech,ofGorseHall.

    Themostnoted'outside'SchoolswereSunderlands(Ashton),Faulkners(Cockbrook),and
    Barlows(Micklehurst).Barlowhadasmuchifnotmore,reputeasaFortuneTellerthanasa
    Schoolmaster.AdiscipleofhiswasaMr.S.Rudd,wholivedandtaughtformanyyearsin
    HuddersfieldRoad.
