WELCOME

lets build something

together

I love that first brisk, truly wintry

day. It reminds me that its time for
family, friends, festivity, food, and
all other good things the holiday
season will bring. In January,
Im eager to set my resolutions in
motionand organization always
seems to make it to the top of the
list. This year were sending you a
special issue to enjoy throughout
the winter season, from holiday
preparation in November to
spring planning in February. Weve also included foldout
calendars for each month, which will certainly help us
with plans to organize our homes, offices, and lives.
Visit us online and in the store, and tell us about your
resolutions for your home and garden. I hope this
holiday season brings you joy, contentment, and
a renewed spirit for the New Year!

Pinching pennies? Bringing

doesnt have to mean

The secret to getting a custom look

for less is in the details. Dressing up
the existing cabinetry gives this vanity
an updated look without construction
costs. New wallpaper adds texture
to the walls.

1 Accessories are the most noticeable

detail, so theyre not the place to skimp.
The same light fixture and towel ring, as
well as similar switch plates, were used
in both the steal and splurge versions.
2 Replacing the existing faucet
changes the look of the vanity without
replacing the countertop and sink.
This sophisticated lever-handle faucet
resembles a historic water pump.
3 Painting a warm mocha glaze over
the ivory-colored doors adds depth
and personality, and its an inexpensive
alternative to buying new cabinetry.

update

Your vanity is poorly constructed.

Buying new cabinets may be better
than trying to work with existing ones,
especially if the materials are worn or you
have to contend with water damage.

Youre not happy with the floor

plan. Starting from scratch can be the
best option to get the layout you need.

You want to keep up with the

neighborhood. If most homes in
your area feature high-end finishes,
prospective home buyers may expect
them in your home.

26

Lowes Creative Ideas

You want to keep your existing floors.

Because flooring often doesnt extend
under the vanity, changing the cabinetrys
size may reveal unfinished floors. Its safer
to update your existing vanity.

Visitors may be tired and

parched from traveling
when they arrive at your
home. Place goodies such
as water and fresh snacks
in their room.

Timeless shades of white and beige are

You dont want to outshine the

with similar finishes, you may not get a full
return on a splurge when its time to sell.

Trimming

a small
space takes ingenuity,
and this chic urban
loft is a huge holiday
success. I can see my
entire apartment from
any corner, so I wanted
decorations that unify
the space, says this
homeowner. By decorating her apartment with gold
ornaments, sparkling lights, and tabletop trees, she
set the stage for a hip, yet elegant, holiday gathering.
Whatever the size or location of your home,
you can bring a similar style to your dcor. For
example, using ornaments of one color on a tree
allows for variation of shapes, sizes, and textures
without causing a visual overload. Let this space
inspire you to create your own glittering holiday

1 A metropolitan twist on the large

five small trees form a bottom row on

pots, which are included with the trees,
and using ornaments in a similar shade
create a cohesive color scheme.

let it shine

Before hanging, check

strings of lights for broken
sockets, frayed wires, or loose
connections. Throw out
damaged lights, which
could be a hazard.

1 Great for entertaining, the

open floor plan of this space allows
for easy traffic flow, plus guests can
celebrate together in one room.
2 Glittery ornaments add a festive feel
to the table. Using glassware and ribbon
as part of the tablescape makes a huge
impact with little effort.
3 Whether it leads to an urban apartment
or suburban drive, a shared space helps
you get to know your neighbors. And
decorating this area together can build
community. Here, a gold-painted wreath,
small pre-lit potted trees, and a few
strings of lights make the entrance
inviting for tenants and holiday guests.

Ah, the promise of a new

beginning. January offers a
blank slatehow will you
fill your days? Organization
often tops the resolutions
list, and with good reason.
Coming off the hustle
and bustle of the holidays,
youre ready to whip your
home back into shape.
Tackle simple chores
first, such as cleaning
out closets. After you gain
momentum, think about
larger projects, such as
replacing flooring or even
renovating a kitchen or
bath. And with all the time
that youre spending inside
during this chilly season,
dont forget to ensure
the health of your family
and home by checking the
quality of indoor air.

Want custom frames

without the custom price tag?

Try this entry-level woodworking project, adjusting the dimensions
to suit your own treasures. Weve provided step-by-step instructions
and a list of tools and materials on the following pages.
Before you hang the frames, think about the arrangement on the
wall, which can be just as impactful as whats inside the frames.
Begin by cutting contractors paper to the outer dimensions of your
frames, and tape the pieces to the wall using painters tape. Move
the pieces around until you like the overall arrangement. Then, its
time to get specific. Measure the exact amount of space youd like
between each frame, and adjust the placements accordingly.
Using a pencil, lightly mark the top and bottom lines of the pieces;
this will serve as a guide when you hang the frames. Before you
hammer the nails, measure the placement of the picture hangers
on your frames, and position the nails accordingly. Remove the
paper as you go, and your gallery is complete.

This plan accommodates a photograph

Cut and label the parts as needed, using
the Cut List as a guide and adjusting for fit.
Step 1: Build the outer frame assembly.
a. Miter cut the outer frame sides, outer
frame top, and outer frame bottom at
45-degree angles per the Cut List.
b. Attach the outer frame sides to the
outer frame top and bottom with glue
and #17 x 1-inch brads. Predrill for the
brads to help keep the wood from
splitting. To ensure that the frames are
square, use a corner clamp at each
mitered corner, and leave the frame in
the clamps until the glue dries.
Step 2: Attach the inner frame assembly.
a. On the back of the outer frame assembly,
scribe a line along its perimeter 14 inch in
from the inside edges.
b. Attach the inner frame sides, inner
frame top, and inner frame bottom to

the inside edges with the scribed line.
Note: Do not miter cut these parts. For
increased stability, drive a brad through
the inner frame parts on both sides of
where they overlap a mitered joint.
Step 3: Finish as desired; add photo,
glass, and backing to the frame.
a. Fill all holes, and sand smooth. Prime
and paint, allowing each coat to dry.
b. Attach a picture hanger to the back
of the frame.
c. Nail into the back of the inner frame
assembly several #18 x 114-inch wire
brads about 12-inch deep. Place at least
three on each side and two on the top
and bottom.
d. Insert the glass, photo, and then the
backing. Bend the 114-inch brads in toward
the backing until the contents are secured
in place. Note: A Lowes employee can

yield an efficient work triangle. A wall between the kitchen and adjacent
sunroom was removed, making plenty of space for a casual sitting
area and a peninsula for a small breakfast bar. The homeowners had
an additional layer of concrete poured on the sunrooms floor in order
to bring it flush with the existing hardwood floors in the kitchen
creating a smooth transition.
These days the kitchen is the showplace of the house, and the couple
couldnt be more thrilled with its classic style and user-friendly nature.
We got everything on our wish list, for now and for later, says one of the
homeowners. Were looking forward to a lot of happy years here.

what they did

the challenge: An unwieldy floor plan made the kitchen
inadequate for family gatherings and impractical for future use.
Outdated appliances and cabinetry, mismatched finishes, and
timeworn surfaces detracted from its appearance.
the solution: A revamped layout and the removal of a wall
between the kitchen and sunroom make the space airier and
the workflow much more fluid. New cabinetry, hardworking
appliances and countertops, plus task lighting and ergonomic
fixtures, elevate the kitchens style and functionality.

Smart Solutions
Good design and ease of use are natural partners, and todays trends show
an increasing overlap between the two. Consider these tips to bridge form
and function in your kitchen and other rooms for design that will last.

Proper Lighting. Layered lighting that provides sufficient illumination

can reduce eyestrain. In this kitchen, recessed lights in the ceiling brighten
the overall space; under-cabinet and pendant fixtures direct task lighting
where its needed.

Sleek Surfaces. Besides possessing timeless appeal, hardwood

floors are easier to traverse than bumpier surfaces such as tile and stone
especially for those who need assistance. Low or zero thresholds also
are key. Here, the adjacent sunrooms concrete floor is flush with the
kitchen floor (shown above, left).

Right Height. A dishwasher raised to waist height (shown above,

right) allows the homeowners to load and unload it without bending over.
Elevating appliances above floor level makes them easier to operate, but
requires careful planning. Because theyll sit higher than the countertop
and cabinets, allow for another element above, such as cabinetry or (as
in this kitchen) a microwave oven.

Ready Access. When buying kitchen appliances, choose side-by-side

or French door-style refrigerators, and look for ranges and dishwashers
with front-mounted controls. These options better serve family members
who need to work while seated, such as in a wheelchair.

Functional Faucets. A single-lever sink faucet requires minimal

hand strength and is considered an ergonomic feature. Installing a
pot filler near the range eliminates the need to carry heavy pots of
water from the sink.
