Topic/Objective: Intro to Biochemistry.

Name: Alexis Twidwell

Class/Period: 5th
Date: 10/14

Essential Question : What is biochemistry and what are examples of it that are used from our everyday lives?
Questions:
What types of
things can
chemistry go into
and what are the
examples
explained?
`

What is the
difference between
acid and bases,
including
examples?

What is a chart of
examples,
monomer, polymer,
structure and
function?

What are molecules

and carbohydrates?

Chemistry: Chemistry of living things, chemistry tends to deal

with chemical compounds and processes occurring in organisms.
Surface tension: Produced by the force of attraction between
water molecules.
Cohesion: Hydrogen bonds between molecules of the same
substances.
Adhesin: Attraction between molecules of different substances.
Solvent: Does the dissolving like water, finishes with no problem.
Solute:: Substance That gets dissolved.

-Molecules of sugar and structures.

-Used by living things or their man sacrae of energy or structural
material.
-Contains, carbon hydrogen, and oxygen.
-Main sources of energy is carbohydrate function.
-Athletes carbot the night before the race.

-Two of three have to match (ring, CHO, lizil ratio)

Summary

Questions:
What are signs of
glucose, and
energy
supplements?

What are lipids and

what do they do
help our body?

Notes:
Glucose supply energies for cells for all membrane activities.
C6H2O6-Major sources of blood sugar,
Mono-One
Ose- Compound is a simple sugar
Sacchar= Sugar
Deoxyribose- Part of DNA
Ribous- Part Of DNA
Polysaccharide- Forms when 2 or more monosaccharide combine.
Glycogen- Forma in when anna's store glucose.
Waters a product dehydration synthesis.
Chemical reaction that created a polymer at mono, by producing the oppsite of
dehydration synthesis.

-Fats
-Oils
-Waxes
Provides energy for cell, cell structure, insulation.
Lipids are proteins that compose the cell membrane.
Cholesterol gives cell membrane flexibility.

What are two types

of polymers?

What is carbon?

Saturated fats
-Every carbon in the fatty acids in solid but a single band= More
hydrogens.
-Solid at room temperature
Unsaturated fats= At Least are double bond between carbon
atoms.
Ex: Liquid at room temperature.
Olive oil.
Secondary Polymers= Sex hormones, cholesterol, chlorophyll,
waxes- At Least one double bond between carbon atoms. Lipos at
room temperatures.
Unsaturated fats have a bent liquid.

How does
biomolecules follow
the some rules of
chemist as any
other molecule?

Inofrent compounds= Compounds that dont contain carbon,

usually derived from non-living things.
Ex: Water, salt and minerals.
Organic compounds= Compounds that contain carbon. ( living
things)
Carbon is a unique element because of its ability to from up to
four strong covalent bonds with other elements.
Most steadily bonds= Sulfur, phosphorus, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon
and hydrogen.
Biological molecules, carbohydrates, lipids, protons, nucleic acids.
Carbon skeleton- Bases structure of connected carbon atoms.
Functional groups- Attached to the carbon ring/ chain.
-Give molecule unique chemical properties.
To build a molecule process by which large compounds are
constructed by joining together smaller compounds.
To build a molecule- Process by which large compounds are
constructed by joining together smaller compounds.
Monomer - Submits that serves as the building block of polymer.
Polymer- Larger molecule constantly of many identical or similar
monomers linked together.
Bio Molecules are building blocks of everything- Life 4 molecules.
1. Carbohydrates
2. Lipids
3. Protons
4. Nucleic acids
