Problem 1
Consider a 15 square column with four #9 Grade 60 ASTM A615 bars, one in each corner. Assume 2 inches
of clear cover to the #4 perimeter hoops, and a concrete compressive strength of 3000 psi. Construct the
P-M interaction curve in sufficient detail to enable design. Assume bending around an axis that is parallel
to one face of the column. Plot your P-M curve in Excel or Grapher.

For all other points such that PURE COMPRESSION and PURE TENSION , all the data points have been
plotted using matlab code written bellow. The matlab code automatically takes a range of z values
and plot the respective Mu and Pu. Also the phi factors have been incorporated appropriately.

Problem 2
A 36-inch deep, 20-inch wide beam spans 20 feet. This simply supported beam supports a dead load of 4
kips/foot (including self weight) and a live load of 5 kips/foot. The concrete compressive strength is 4500
psi; the rebar are Grade 60 ASTM A706. The beam is reinforced with 5 #10 bars bottom, 2 #6 bars top, and
3 #5 bars each face uniformly spaced between the longitudinal reinforcement. Assume an effective depth to
the #10 bars of 32 inches.
If closed stirrups are provided at 16 inches on center along the span, what is the required area of one leg of
the stirrup at the support if calculations are performed a) per ACI-318, and b) per the MCFT, as
implemented in the 2010 AASHTO LRFD Specification.
