St Barbara Great Virgin Martyr of Heliopolis

St Barbara lived during the reign of Emperor Maximian (305-311). Her
pagan father, Dioscoros, was a rich and illustrious citizen of Heliopolis,
Syria. After his wife had died, he devoted himself to the care and
education of his only daughter.
St Barbaras extraordinary beauty compelled Dioscoros to hide her from the
sight of strangers, by having a high tower constructed for her protection
and accommodation - where only carefully selected servants and
pagan teachers were permitted entry.
The view of the beautiful landscape stretching into the distance and the
spectacular night skies fascinated and amazed St Barbara as she gazed
each day and night upon the throughout the seasons of the years,
which caused her to ponder many aspects concerning the All Powerful
Creator of such a splendid universe.
From her early childhood St Barbara believed that the cold, lifeless,
sculptures of marble, silver and gold that her father wanted her to
worship as gods were powerless, inanimate objects made by human
hands that certainly unable to create anything at all, nor could they
have power over her!
Each day, as she contemplated the natural beauty of the world, which she
observed from her high tower, her desire to know the True, Living and
Creative God profoundly consumed her soul, and she yearned to devote
herself entirely to Him by a life of chastity.
Eventually, reports of St Barbaras extraordinary physical beauty and
erudite education in many fields of scholarly knowledge were
whispered throughout the elite society of Heliopolis, whereupon many
suitors approached Dioscoros, with offers of marriage, but despite the
entreaties of her father, she gently and politely refused them all, and
cautioned her father that his persistence might alienate them forever.
Dioscoros, being ambitious, could not understand what caused her
stubborn refusals of marriage into such influential families, which would
increase his own wealth and social status, and, having pondered the
problem, he decided that his daughters temperament had been
affected by her life of seclusion, so, in the expectation of her eventual
acquiescence, he permitted her to leave the tower and granted
freedom to choose her own friends and acquaintances.
St Barbara met young Christian maidens in the city, who taught her about
our Divine Creator, the Holy Trinity, and the Divine Logos our Lord and
Saviour, Jesus Christ, the Incarnate, Eternal Word and Son of God the
Father.
By Divine Grace she also met a Priest who had arrived from Alexandria,
disguised as a merchant, and after having properly instructing her in
the Divine Mysteries of our Christian Faith, he Baptized St Barbara, and
then returned to his own country.
At this same time, a luxurious bathhouse was being built at Dioscoros home.
By his orders, the workers were to insert two windows in the south wall,
but St Barbara, taking advantage of her fathers absence, asked them to
make a third window, thereby forming a Trinity of light.
On one of the walls of the bathhouse, St Barbara mysteriously etched a cross
into the marble with her finger.
(Later, her footprints also became imprinted on the stone steps, and the
water of the bathhouse had great Healing Power that St Symeon
Metaphrastes compared to the Sanctified Stream of the Jordan River,
and the Pool of Siloam in Jerusalem.)

THE EPISTLE

OF

ST PAUL

TO THE

GALATIANS 3 : 23 4 : 5

OUR ADOPTION AS CO-HEIRS WITH CHRIST THROUGH OUR FAITH AND HOLY BAPTISM

Brethren: before Faith came, we were kept under guard by the Law kept for
the Faith that would afterward be revealed.
Therefore, the Law was our Tutor - to bring us to Christ, so that we might be
Justified by Faith.
After Faith has come, we are no longer under a Tutor.
You are all sons of God through Faith in Christ Jesus.
For as many of you as were Baptised into Christ have put on Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek; there is neither slave nor free; there is neither
male nor female.
You are all one in Christ Jesus.
If you are Christs then you are Abrahams seed, and Heirs according to the
Promise.
I say that the Heir as long as he is a child does not differ at all from a slave,
although he is master of all, but is under Guardians and Stewards until the
time appointed by the Father.
Even so, we when we were children were in bondage under the elements of
the world.
When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son Born of a
Woman, Born under the Law - to Redeem those who were under the Law,
that we might receive the Adoption as sons.
THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING
OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST HEALS

TO

ST LUKE 13 : 10 - 17

THE

BOWED WOMAN

ON THE

SABBATH

At that time, our Lord was teaching in one of the Synagogues on the Sabbath.
And behold: there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen
years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself.
Seeing her, Jesus called her to Him, and said to Her: Woman: you are loosed
from your infirmity.
And He laid His Hands on her.
And immediately she was made straight, and she Glorified God.
Indignately, the Ruler of the Synagogue responded, for Jesus had Healed on
the Sabbath.
He said to the crowd: There are six days on which to work. On them come and
be Healed, and not on the Sabbath Day!
Answering him, the Lord said: Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the
Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water
it?
So ought not this woman being a daughter of Abraham - whom Satan
has bound think of it: for eighteen years be loosed from this bond on
the Sabbath?
And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all
the multitude rejoiced for all the Glorious Things that were done by Him.

JOHN-4

DECEMBER 2016

When Dioscoros returned and saw the changes to the bathhouse he was
puzzled until St Barbara told him about how she had come to know
about the Saving Power of the Son of God and the futility of worshipping
man made idols.
Dioscoros was infuriated beyond all reason. He grabbed a sword and
almost struck St Barbara with it, as she turned and fled. He angrily
chased after her, until his path became blocked by a hill, which had
miraculously opened up and concealed St Barbara in a deep crevice.
After a very long and fruitless search for his daughter, Dioscoros
encountered two Shepherds who showed him to the cave where St
Barbara had hidden, and driven by his hatred, Dioscoros seized St
Barbara and beat her until she was swollen and bloody.
He dragged her to his house where she was imprisoned and guarded to
prevent her from receiving any acts of mercy neither food nor drink in
an attempt to wear her resistance down and force her to submit to his
will.
When all his efforts failed, Dioscoros had her taken to the Prefect,
Martianos, who ordered her to be brutally beaten and bludgeoned,
until the executioners were exhausted and St Barbara was returned to
the filthy dungeon where she prayed fervently to her Heavenly
Bridegroom, Who Appeared before her, to comfort and encourage her
and to Heal her terrible wounds.
The torturers were shocked to see that her wounds were healed, so they
subjected St Barbara to worse, degrading punishment, which was
witnessed by multitudes of citizens, (as a warning).
Among the horrified witnesses, was a virtuous Christian woman, St Juliana,
who was heart-broken for her suffering Sister in Christ, but also
profoundly encouraged by St Barbaras voluntary Martyrdom, so she
loudly denounced the pagan authorities and their executioners for what
they had done to someone so beautiful, pure and innocent.
As was to be expected, St Juliana was immediately seized, dragged to the
prison and unmercifully tortured alongside St Barbara. Their naked
bodies were raked and shredded with sharp hooks, after which they
dragged naked and bleeding through the city amidst derision and
jeers, being spat upon, beaten and kicked by the blood thirsty, cruel
pagan mobs who were encouraged by the executioners.
Through the Intercessory Prayers of St Barbara, our Lord sent an Angel to
cover the nakedness of the Holy Martyrs with a splendid robe.
Having reached the place of execution, St Barbara and St Juliana were
beheaded, thereby being Perfected by sword.
The insane, hatred-driven father, Dioscoros, had beheaded his own
daughter, and consequently, both the Prefect, Martianos, and Dioscoros
were struck by lightning and killed instantly.
In the sixth century, the Holy Relics of St Barbara, the Great Holy Virgin
Martyr were transferred to Constantinople.
Six hundred years later, they were transferred to Kiev by Barbara, the
daughter of Byzantine Emperor, Alexios Comnenos, who married
Russian Prince Michael Izyaslavich.
Today the Holy Relics of St Barbara rest at Kievs St Vladimir Cathedral,
where an Akathist to the Saint is served each Tuesday.
Many pious Orthodox Christians chant the Troparion of St Barbara each
day, recalling our Saviours Promise that those who remembered her
and her sufferings would be preserved from a sudden, unexpected
death, and would not depart this life without the Benefit of the Holy
Mysteries of Christ.
May her memory be Eternal, and may she always Intercede for our
Salvation.
