Why do our Prayers for help in our daily

Struggle seem to be unanswered ?

Blessed Elder Ephraim Katounakiotis

Excuses do not exist in Holy Scripture.
The Saints not only never used excuses, but they also
suffered knowingly for the sake of others.

St John the Chrysostom

If good is not being done in a good way, then it is not
good.

St Joseph the Hysychast

Never despair due to the ceaseless temptations, sufferings
and distresses that affect us so deeply, for with the Love
of our Lord we are able to lighten the heavy burdens of
anger and depression that threaten to overwhelm us.

Often we wonder to ourselves: If Christ Himself told us

...Ask
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone
who asks,
asks, receives; he who seeks finds; and
and to him who
knocks, the door will be opened..
opened...
... why do my Prayers
for Help in my daily Struggle remain unanswered?
(MATTHEW 7:7-8)
Perhaps the answer to this question is provided by the
following account and Inspired Wisdom of our Desert
Fathers:
In Sketis there once lived a Monk who performed his
Labours with Perfection and his Prayers and Services
with exactitude. He was, however, negligent in the rest of
his duties.
One day Satan appeared to one of the Holy Elders and
sarcastically said to him: Do you want to know
something strange? There is a certain Monk who keeps
me under his arm, so that I cannot flee from him yet I
can still do everything that I wish!
Nonetheless, at every hour he says to God: Lord Deliver
me from the Evil One!
Abba Moses explained: W
When our Labours and Spiritual
Endeavours are not in agreement with our Prayers, then
we labour in vain!
vain
One of those who heard him say this asked: What is
meant by ...agreement between our Labours (praxis)
and our Prayers...?
The Elder answered: To
To succeed is to no longer do that
from which we
we pray to God for deliverance.
deliverance.
When we abandon our will, then God converses with us
and accepts our Prayers
Prayers.

St Joachim & St Anna - Conception

St. Nikolai (Velimirovich) of Ochrid and Zicha
God allows those who are prideful - who think that their
power is secured forever - to be crushed, and thereby
humbled.

From the Gerontikon

The Eldress, Ammas, said that the Teacher has to be one
who is not fond of rule and power, and should be
without pride and vanity.

St Tikhon of Zadonsk
Every Christian should consider the following:
1) that the time of our life passes without stopping,
2) that we cannot turn back time and the past is completely
gone,
3) that we cannot control the past and the future but only
the present which we live at this very moment, and
4) that we do not know when our life will end.
This is why we should always be ready, every day, every
hour, and every moment, through a state of continuous
Repentance, while our Spiritual Situation should be as
such as we would like it to be the Hour of our death.

10. F E S T A L W E E K D A Y V E S P E R S S T J O A C H I M & S T A N N A - 9 D E C E M B E R

So much attention is paid by Christians to the Blessed Virgin Mary,

the Theotokos, Sanctified in every conceivable way, that there is a
tendency to overlook her parents.
Commemorated the day after the commemoration of their daughter,
who is remembered on other days as well, St Joachim and St Anna
were the parents of a flesh-and-blood human being they called
Mary and, therefore, the Grandparents of a flesh-and-blood
human Being - in form at least - Who died to Save the world.
Considered in this light, this Righteous couple is appreciated most by
Grandparents of the world.
The Spiritual Beauty of St Anna is expressed in Holy Scripture,
equalled by that of her devoted husband, the too lightly regarded St
Joachim.
Since there is no greater part of the Divine Plan of the universe than
motherhood, it follows that St. Anna is given individual honour
with an observance of a Feast day in her name on 26 July.
This in no way diminishes the image of her husband, St Joachim.
Shrouded by twenty centuries of legend, close scrutiny by biblical
scholars has cleared away legend and established a more accurate
and factual account, however meagre, of St Joachim and St Anna.
There is no denying the word of the Apostle, St James, who saw fit to
go to great lengths to glean facts about the parents of our Lady, the
Ever Blessed Virgin Mary, which he described in a letter that
somehow failed to find official acceptance.
Conflicting views notwithstanding, it is definitely known that St Anna
was of the prestigious Hebrew Tribe of Levi and that she was the
daughter of the High Priest, Nathan, who was wed to a namesake,
Mary.
This High Priest had two daughters besides Mary who mothered St
Anna, named Sovin and Anna, both of whom married and resided
in Bethlehem.
St Anna was married St Joachim in Galilee where their daughter, St
Mary, the Theotokos, was born.
There is no denying that St Joachim was favoured by God, Who
answered his Prayer that a child be born to the barren union with
St Anna.
The birth of their long awaited daughter set in motion the world's
greatest Faith, which was so overwhelming that St Joachim faded
F E S T A L W E E K D A Y V E S P E R S S T J O A C H I M & S T A N N A - 9 D E C E M B E R 3.

from view in misty swirls that surrounded the Sweet Mysteries of

Christianity.
It is enough to know St Joachim was the father of our Lady Theotokos the mother who bore Jesus Christ, our Divine Saviour Who changed
the course of world history and set it on another Path which, if
followed, leads us to Eternal Life.
The fact that God moves in Mysterious Ways was evident when St
Joachim and St Anna ceaselessly prayed for a child not knowing
whether they would be granted a son or a daughter and having no
idea of what lay in store for them and for the world.
St James the Holy Apostle of Christ quoted an Angel of the Lord who
said to St Anna: "The Lord has heard thy Prayer, and thou shalt
conceive and bring forth, and thy Seed shall be spoken of in all the
world."
There was no mention of the gender of the child as St James said that
St Anna accepted the Angelic Annunciation with the words: "As the
Lord my God lives, if I beget male or female, I will bring it as a Gift
to the Lord my God; and it shall minister unto His Holy Things all
the days of its life."
The use of the word "it" indicates that St Anna may have had
premonitions but certainly no advance notice that 'it' was to be
"she," who in turn, would knowingly bring forth the Son of God.
Indeed God does move in Mysterious Ways!
An Orthodox Hymn states: As we celebrate the Remembrance of Thy
Righteous GrandGrand-Parents, through them we beseech Thee, O Lord,
to Save our souls.".
"Anna rejoices now that she is loosed from the bonds of barrenness, as
she nourishes the Most Pure One, calling all to praise Him Who
has given
given the world Her who alone is Mother, yet has known no
man."
There can be no more touching tribute than to be mentioned in praise
and Prayer in the Sacred Music of the Church.
The St Joachim and St Anna are an integral part of the Divine Liturgy,
always being mentioned in the Dismissal Prayers of our Holy
Services:
"...May the Risen Christ, our True God, with the Prayers of His Pure
and Holy Mother, the Power of the Precious and LifeLife-giving Cross,
the Protection of the Spiritual Powers of Heaven...the Holy and
Righteous Ancestors Joachim and Anna...and all the Saints whose
memory we celebrate have Mercy on us and Save us."
