ITALIAN NAVAL INDUSTRY

The Italian defence industry of the naval sector is able to offer a comprehensive
range of vessels, from aircraft carriers to patrol boats, thanks to its notable skills
in all the fields of warship design, building and outfitting.
This sector is integrated in the global industrial framework of the Italian
Association of Aerospace and Defence Industries (AIAD), representing high
technology companies involved in the production, applications and services of
aerospace, ground, naval and electronics systems and equipments.
AIAD is affiliated to CONFINDUSTRIA and is a member of ASD (Aerospace and
Defence Industries Association of Europe), UNAVIA (The Italian Association for
Standardization, Education and Training in the Aerospace Sector) and UNAVIAcert
(a third party Certification body for Aerospace and Defence companies).
AIAD's associated companies, employ over 50,000 workers, and produce
practically all of Italy's output in the respective sectors.
The Italian naval industry owns a 200 years experience in shipbuilding for the
National Navy and foreign countries, with more than 600 ships built since 1816.
In the last years the sector was involved in a rationalization process in order to
establish a strong industrial group able to effectively compete on the global
market and represent the country in multi-national partnerships. This process
lead to the integration into Finmeccanica of almost the whole aerospace and
helicopter industry, and a large part of the military electronics and defence
systems industries.
Today AgustaWestland has the possibility to effectively compete with
EADS/Eurocopter in the struggle to achieve the world leadership in the helicopter
sector.
At present Fincantieri shipyards are building the new multi-mission
RINASCIMENTO class frigates (FREMM programme) in the framework of a project
jointly managed by Orizzonte Sistemi Navali S.p.A. (51% Fincantieri and 49%
Finmeccanica) for Italy and Armaris (originally 50% DCN and 50% Thales, now
wholly owned by DCNS) for France. Over the last three years Fincantieri signed
important contracts with India, Malta, Peru, Iraq and Turkey. Fincantieri is also
participating in the development of the US Navy LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) as
part of a consortium led by Lockheed Martin. In 2006 Intermarine, specialized in
the building of GRP vessels, signed a contract with the Finnish Navy for three
MCMVs to be delivered by 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively.
Other shipyards located in different regions build minor naval craft for police and
custom forces.
AGUSTAWESTLAND
As a leader in the world commercial as well as military helicopter markets
AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica Company, has also progressively set the
standard for naval and maritime applications thanks to the longstanding knowhow, expertise and success of a range of products. A large number of Navies and
Coast Guards worldwide have operated various helicopter types for decades and
many are taking and will take advantage of the most advanced products for
maritime multi-role tasks. AgustaWestland is the only helicopter manufacturer in
the world to be able to offer a complete range of maritime helicopters, which
starts with the AW109 Power and the AW109 LUH at 3 tons and goes right up

NAVAL FORCES Special Issue 2008

through the weight categories with products such as Super Lynx, Future Lynx,
AW139, NH90 and at the top end the 16 ton AW101.

A total capability provider, AgustaWestland is more than just a helicopter

manufacturer and this total capability permits the company to develop the latest
generation of rotorcraft that, through their high level of system integration, can
meet the most demanding operational requirements. Helicopter system
integration itself is a key element to AgustaWestland being the company able to
design avionic, flight management as well as mission systems. AgustaWestland
has experienced a progressive growth of its system integration capability in
decades by a number of maritime helicopter programmes including the AB212,
SH-3D, EH101, Super Lynx 300, AW109 LUH. Clear evidence of the achieved
globally recognized technological excellence in the naval rotorcraft field, which led
the company to become a well established and leading system integration
provider, is the current AgustaWestland's responsibility for the overall integration
of the NH90 naval mission system.
As the most advanced Italian Navy's helicopter in service, the AW 101 (at first
designated the EH101) has made the service perform a remarkable step forward
having been designed in the 80s to meet the Italian and British Sea King fleet
replacement requirements. Developed by the successful cooperation between
Agusta and Westland through EHI, the AW101 has turned into the first significant
integration step towards what would have become AgustaWestland company in
2001. The Italian Navy started taking delivery of the AW101s in 2001 with total
orders for 24 helicopters configured for a number of roles including antisubmarine warfare/anti-surface vessel warfare, helicopter early warning, utility
and amphibious support. The three-engine AW101 has the power and
performance for autonomous, multi-role operations from vessels, carriers or land
bases, offering exceptional agility for demanding deck landing conditions. It is
able to operate and co-ordinate with other naval units or operate autonomously.
For anti-surface warfare the AW101 features a powerful 360 radar and
compatibility with long range air-to-surface missiles. Anti-submarine warfare
configuration is equipped with dipping sonar and sonobuoys and weapon carriers
for torpedoes or depth charges. Enhanced 360 air surveillance radar and tactical
datalink offer long range airborne early warning capability, together with twin
engine cruise speed for increased endurance. Long mission endurance is also
ideal for mine hunting, neutralization and sweeping missions. The naval version of
the AW101 is also in service with the Royal Navy and the Japanese Maritime Self
Defence Force (JMSDF).

NAVAL FORCES Special Issue 2008

Next move to further modernize and enhance the Italian Navy aircraft fleet will be
the beginning of the NH90s delivery aimed to replace the AB212s. This advanced
four-nation programme managed through NH Industries sees AgustaWestland
deeply involved with a 32% stake and responsibility for naval mission system
integration for all customers and the production of the Italian (Navy and Army),
Norwegian and Dutch helicopters, with a total amount of 150 units.
AgustaWestland is also in charge of the development and production of the
following components for all helicopters: the main transmission, tail drive shaft,
hydraulic system, automatic flight control system, rear ramp, rear fuselage,
alternate engine installation and on-board computers. A 11 ton class twin engine
multi-role helicopter developed to meet the naval shipborne helicopter
requirements of several European NATO countries, the NH90 NFH variant (of
which Italy has ordered 46 units + 10 MTTH) features state-of-the-art technology
Including fly-by-wire flight control system, advanced mission avionics, an allcomposite airframe and advanced low observability solutions. Thanks to its
contained weight and dimensions and particularly to the blade and tail automatic
folding system, it can operate from/to small frigates. The NFH is primarily
conceived for autonomous Anti-Submarine Warfare and Anti Surface Warfare
missions. The NFH will be used for the detection, classification, identification by
type, tracking and attack of submarines or surface targets including Over The
Horizon Targeting by day and night. Additional applications include Vertical
Replenishment. SAR and troop transport.

Eurosam's development programme was originally funded by the French and
Italian defence ministries, later joined by Britain's Ministry of Defence for the
development of a naval area-defence variant.
The company has already been selected by the Royal Saudi Arabian Navy to
supply the main weapon systems of its latest F3000S air-defence frigates, and
additional export sales are being negotiated to other countries.

NAVAL FORCES Special Issue 2008

EUROSAM is the industrial prime contractor and system design authority for the
development, production, marketing and sales of a range of medium-range naval
and ground-launched air-defence missiles also known as Famille de missiles SolAir Futurs (FSAF), or Future Surface-to-Air Family of missile systems.
These systems were developed under contract from the French and Italian
Governments, who in the late 1980s had come to similar conclusions as to the
operational requirements for their air-defence needs. These requirements called
for naval and ground-launched missiles capable of defeating threats as diverse as
high-speed tactical missiles (supersonic sea skimmers, air-launched, antiradiation, cruise, TBM and other types) and highly-manoeuvering aircraft, in a
saturation attack scenario. The key capability of these systems is their capability
of simultaneously engaging multiple targets over 360 degrees.
France and Italy agreed to develop a missile systems family, whose costs they
shared on a 50-50 basis:
The naval SAAM (Surface-to-Air Anti-Missile systems SAAM and SAAM AD), for
anti-all, protection of naval ships, using the ASTER 15 and ASTER 30 missiles
guided by the ARABEL or EMPAR radars;
The ground-launched Sol-Air Moyenne Portee (SAMP-T, or Land SAAM AD
ground-launched surface-to-air medium range), using the longer-range ASTER
30 missile guided by the ARABEL radar, with which both France and Italy will
replace their HAWK air-defence missiles.
EUROSAM is engaged in the production of ASTER 15 and ASTER 30 missiles for
France, Italy and for the Royal Navy. The ASTER 15, associated with ARABEL or
EMPAR radar, is employed in the SAAM-Fr air defence system (installed onboard
the French aircraft carrier CHARLES DE GAULLE and the Royal Saudi Navy's
SAWARI II type frigates, and in the SAAM-It selected by the Italian Navy to equip
the aircraft carrier CAVOUR. SAAM systems will be fitted also onboard the new
French-Italian FREMM frigates. The ASTER 15 and 30, associated with EMPAR or
SAMPSON radar are employed in the PAAMS area defence system fitted onboard
the French-Italian HORIZON ships (Italian Navy's ANDREA DORIA class
destroyers) and the UK's Type 45 destroyers.

active or passive anti-torpedo effectors.
The A244/s mod.3 torpedo is the very last evolution of the A244/s fire-and-forget
ASW LWT family nowadays in service with 15 navies. The unique and extensively
proven shallow water performances have been further enhanced in the A244/s
mod.3 to cope with the submarines evolved capabilities and operational theatres
such as: long, engagement range to render the launching vessel less subject to

NAVAL FORCES Special Issue 2008

the possible reaction of the sub; capability to counter more and more
sophisticated anti-torpedo countermeasures released by the sub; capability to
counter more and more silenced threats; capability to significantly delay the
target alert and reaction; capability to fully cope with the littoral waters warfare.
The A244/s mod.3 torpedo has been designed to counter the threat posed by any
conventional submarine as well as nuclear subs when engaged at the transit
speed of up to 15Kts even when acoustically coated or deploying anti-torpedo
countermeasures and evading at a maximum speed of 30Kts. The torpedo can be
