Mr. Joe Bruen taught eighth grade Advanced Global Studies, tenth grade American History and twelfth grade American Government at Mound Westonka High School during the fall semester. Butch Humbert and I served as the cooperating teachers during this experience for the eight weeks. Both of us have been in the district for several years (eleven for myself and 30 for Butch). Mr. Bruen had a good, positive and successful experience in our classrooms. Joe completed his teaching duties in a positive and professional manner. We were impressed with his strengths in relating to the students, specifically students who may not have a lot of positive adult interactions. Mr. Bruen went the extra mile to get to know his students, attending sporting events, setting up a music playlist in class that students enjoyed and being available for casual conversation. Mr. Bruen was always prepared with his lessons and was able to adjust to the needs of the students. Joe was responsible for teaching two sections of Advanced 8 Global Studies. He successfully planned the equivalent of three chapters during his time here. We were impressed with Joes use of technology with the students. The eighth graders at MWHS are 1:1 with technology and Joe embraced that. He used Prezi, Google Apps, Schoology and Skyward all while teaching at MWHS. Joe also showed creativity in his lesson planning and assessing of students. Tests, projects, presentations and time lines were all included within his teaching units. In tenth grade American History Joe guided our students through a unit on the frontier era using the aforementioned techniques. Joe also taught one section of Senior American Government. He used his creativity to get the students to learn about the basics of government, all while having an enjoyable class experience. Joe also was a dynamic part of the MWHS Social Studies Professional Learning Committee, giving ideas and gaining insight from experienced teachers. He embraced personalization, and at times had three different lessons going on (and going well) in one class period. Mr. Bruen grew as a teacher from his first day until his final day at Mound Westonka High School. Joe is an outstanding student teacher and we know he will continue to be as he gets his own classroom. His strengths include his communication with students, use of technology, his ability to plan effective lessons and his great attitude. If you would like any further information please contact one or both of us. Sincerely, Sara Schwartz & Butch Humbert
