Lesson Plan Incorporating Technology

Course Name ________Biology of Plants _______________

Lesson Topic ____Diversification of seedless vascular plants ___________
1. List the goals and objectives for this lesson.
- be able to identify synapomorphies shared by the seedless vascular
plants
- understand were these plants fit in the evolutionary history of plants
- become familiar with major clades and their unique synapomorphies
in the seedless vascular lineage

2. What activities will be required for this lesson? (Discussion, readings,

specific group activity, etc.)
Students will become acclimated with the material using a flipped
classroom lecture they must watch before coming to class. Also, the
night prior to class, students must post at least one question or idea
based on the lecture to a discussion board. These ideas and questions
will be used for the subsequent in-class quiz game.
In class, students will assemble into their lab groups (~12 groups total).
Each group will be given a question and certain amount of time to
respond (max. 5 min). If they do not provide the correct answer in the
allotted time, other groups will have the opportunity to steal the
question. Occasionally, there will be lightning rounds, in which all
groups will participate. Students will be instructed to navigate to the
class twitter or instagram pages, where they will need to respond to a
question or identify a picture first.

3. How will you assess the lesson?

Students will receive scores at the end of the game based on their efforts
to answer the question and if their answer was correct. Observable effort
to figure out the question yields 1 point, correct answers an additional
point. Those groups that can steal questions correctly receive a half
point. Groups who answer correctly for the lightning round receive a
point, with the first group to correctly answer receiving 2 points. Outside
of this exercise, questions asked in the game or posed on the course
discussion board will also be potential exam questions.

4. What resources (lecture, websites, text book chapters, articles, video

clip, exams, etc.) do you need to assemble for the lesson? Which already
exist and which will you need to develop?
