SUSIE SOCKS

I love this lace pattern. I love this

heel. And I love my sister. So it
seemed natural that they should all
come together in the Susie Sock.

I learned the lace from Jeri Riggs and

her Column of Leaves Cardigan
Sweater. The pattern is very stretchy
and extremely easy to memorize.

The heel was a big treat to learn when

I knit JC Briars Leafling socks. JC
learned it from Cat Bordhis New
Pathways for Sock

Knitters: Book One. This is the

perfect heel for clog wearers (which we are). The gusset is worked in one piece without the need
to pickup stitches. No holes! And the heel flap travels down the bottom of the foot leaving a
nice soft pad.

As you read the pattern, youll see that there is both plain type and italic type. The actual pattern
is in the plain font. Ive italicized the parts that are notes and technique suggestions. Ive also
included a lot of photos (some of which are better than others) so youll be able to gauge your
progress.

Yarn2 balls fingering weight yarn that will work to gauge. Approximately 400 yards.

NeedlesSet of 5, US 2 double point needles or size needed to attain gauge. Youll also need
two extra needles for heel. If you dont have extra size 2s, use two size 1sit wont make a big
difference.

Gauge7 stitches to the inch in stockinette stitch.

KLLInsert the left needle into the left loop of the stitch 2 rows below the stitch on the right
hand needle. Place the loop on the left hand needle and then knit into it.
KRLInsert the right needle into the stitch just below the first stitch on the left hand needle and
knit into it.
wrap & turnSlip the stitch from the left hand needle as if to purl with the yarn in back. Bring
the yarn forward and then slip the stitch back onto the left hand needle.

(KLL and KRL are very hard to describe. There is a really good video at www.knittinghelp.com.
Go to the increase button at the top down and then scroll down. On the RKI, I prefer the second
method that she gives.)

Lace Pattern:

Row 1: p1, yo, ssk, p1, k2tog, yo, p1, ktbl

Row 2: p1, k2, p1, k2, p1, k1
Row 3: p1, k2tog, yo, p1, yo, ssk, p1, ktbl
Row 4: p1, k2, p1, k2, p1, k1

Cast on 64 stitches.

Distribute the stitches onto 4 needles and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist
your stitches.

Begin twisted ribbing. Purl 1, knit 1 through back loop until you have 1 inch of ribbing (you can
make the ribbing longer if you prefer). I know it sounds a little bit backwards to start the ribbing
with the purl instead of the k1tbl, but this way the lace will grow correctly out of the ribbing.

Begin working lace pattern. Continue until the leg measures 5 inches ending with an even
numbered row.
Now we are going to rearrange a little bit and number our needles. Well also be transitioning
from four needles to three and shifting the beginning of the round.

Increase one stitch in the first stitch on the needle and then knit to the end of the needle. This is
now the beginning of the round. Do a KLL, placing the increase on the second needle. Continue
in the lace pattern to the end of the needle17 stitches on the needle (this is now needle 1).
Continue in lace for the next needle and, at the end, do a KRL and keep it on this needle17
stitches on the needle (this is now needle 2). Slip 1, knit 1 16 times, slip 1 all onto one needle
(needle 3). Youve now eliminated the fourth needle.

You are now working on three needles whose current stitch counts are:

Needle 117 stitches

Needle 217 stitches
Neddle 333 stitches

The increases for the gusset will be on needles 1 and 2.

Next rowwork needles one and two in lace pattern and knit across needle three.

Next round (Round A): Needle 1knit 1, KLL, work in lace pattern to the end. Needle 2, work
in lace pattern to the end of the pattern repeat, KRL, knit 1. Needle 3, slip 1, knit 1 to the end of
the needle. Remember to slip the stitches as if you were going to purl them with the yarn in the
back.
You will see that the increase stitches are appearing at the beginning and the end of the lace
pattern. If it is helpful to place a marker at the begging and end of the lace repeat, feel free to do
so.

Next round (Round B): Needle 1knit increased stitches, work lace pattern. Needle 2work
lace pattern, knit increased stitches. Needle 3knit all stitches.

Repeat the last two rounds, continuing to increase between the knitted stitches and the lace
pattern on needles 1 and 2 until you have increased 32 stitches total (16 stitches on needle 1 and
16 stitches on needle 2). You will have finished with a round B.

Your current stitch counts are:

Needle 132 stitches

Needle 232 stitches
Needle 333 stitches

Now it is time to turn the heel.

Heel round 1: To set up the turn, knit the first 16 stitches on needle 1, knit the next 16 in lace
pattern. Work the first 16 stitches on needle 2 in the lace pattern and then knit the final 16
stitches. On needle 3, slip 1, knit 1 11 times (22 stitches). Wrap and turn. From this point on,
while you turn the heel, you will be only working on needle 3.

Heel round 2: Purl 11 stitches, wrap and turn.

Heel round 3: Work in slip 1, knit 1 pattern to wrapped stitch, wrap and turn.

Heel round 4: Purl to wrapped stitch, wrap and turn.

Continue with round 3 and 4 until all the stitches on needle 3 have been wrapped, ending with a
purl row.

Youve now made it to the heel flap.

Are you ready? This is the only part that is a little bit fiddly. Youre going to continue working
primarily on needle 3 but at the end of each row, youll be taking the last stitch on needle 3 and
the first stitch on either needle 1 or 2 and decreasing the gusset stitches. Its a little bit tricky
getting the torque correct between the needles. I found it easier to slip 15 of the increase stitches
on needles 1 and 2 onto extra double points. Lets call them 1A and 2A. Never thought youd be
working socks on 6 needles did you?

You still have one gusset stitch left on needles 1 and 2. Well take care of these when we start
working in the round again.

Youve just finished the final purl row of turning the heel; you have the first wrapped stitch on
your right hand needle and 32 stitches of the slip 1, knit 1 pattern facing you on the left needle.

Round 1: Keeping the slip 1, knit 1 pattern intact, work across needle three to the last stitch.
SSK this stitch with the first stitch on needle 1A. Dont wrap. Turn your work.

Round 2: Slip the first stitch as if to purl then purl across the needle to the last stitch. Purl this
stitch together with the first stitch on needle 2A.

Youve now eaten up one gusset stitch on each side. Continue with these two rows until you
have used up all the gusset stitches on 1A and 2A.

When you get to the point where you have only 2 or 3 stitches left on 1A and 2A, you may want to
slip them onto either end of needle 3 and put the extra needles away. At this point, your torque
should be fine.

There you have it. It was much easier than it sounded, wasnt it? At this point, its time to start
working in the round again. Your stitch count is now:

Needle 117 stitches

Needle 217 stitches
Needle 333 stitches

Your working yarn should be at the beginning of Needle 3.

Knit 15 stitches across needle 3, then k2tog (this eliminates that extra stitch that we added when
we began the heel), then knit until you have one stitch left on the needle. Move the first stitch on
needle 1 to needle 3 and ssk. This eliminates the remaining gusset stitch.

You are now back at the beginning of the round. Work the remaining stitches on needle 1 in lace
pattern. Work the first 16 stitches on needle 2 in lace pattern then knit the remaining gusset
stitch together with the first stitch on needle 3. Knit all stitches on needle 3. Your stitch count is
now:

Needle 116 lace stitches

Needle 216 lace stitches
Needle 332 knit stitches

Continue working needles 1 and 2 in lace pattern and needle 3 as all knits until you are 2
inches from your desired length.

Knit 7 rounds.

Time to start decreasing for the toe.

Round 1: Knit.

Round 2: Needle 1knit 1, ssk, knit to end of the needle. Needle 2knit until there are three
stitches left, k2tog, knit 1. Needle 3knit 1, ssk, knit until there are three stitches left, k2tog,
knit 1. Youve decreased four stitches.

Repeat these two rounds until you have 36 stitches left. Your stitch count is now:

Needle 19 stitches
Needle 29 stitches
Needle 318 stitches

Now work Round 2 until you have 16 stitches left. Your stitch count is now:

Needle 14 stitches
Needle 24 stitches
Needle 38 stitches

Slip the stitches from needle 2 to needle 1 so that you have 8 stitches each on two needles.

Finish with kitchener stitch. If you get the kitchener heebie jeebies, go to www.knittinghelp.com
for a refresher course.
