Centrifugal tube mill

Type ZRM for finest grinding

The centrifugal tube mill is used for fine grinding of

materials with any degree of hardness. Normally, grain
sizes of up to 1000 m are handled. Fine grain sizes of
smaller than 0.1 m can be reached by wet grinding.
Main applications are in laboratories, the chemical,
mineral, pharmaceutical industries, as well as food
processing, waste management and mining.

Function
The centrifugal tube mill has a horizontal grinding
chamber, which moves in a circular motion. To be able to
do this the grinding tube is supported by crossbeams in
eccentric bearings, which are driven by two syncronized
motors.
Practical experience and extensive tests have shown this
setting of the mill to be the most productive:
grinding media: steel or ceramics
30% filling with grinding media
Diameter of the grinding media:
between 200 m and 8 mm
30% filling with material to be ground
During the grinding process, the grinding media form
crescent like formation, which moves in a coherently
open mass along the inner wall of the grinding tube.
The high-speed photograph below shows the shape of
the grinding media when grinding limestone.

The grinding material is normally (in the case of wet

grinding) pumped through the grinding tube as a
suspension.
The extreme acceleration of the grinding tube (20 g),
resulting in highly effective recurring friction and impact forces, leads to a very high fineness grade of the
material.
Finally, the ground material is separated from the
grinding media by a separation device integrated in the
end wall of the tube.
The special construction and operation of the centrifugal
tube mill is distinguished, particularly because all the
energy is generated externally. Therefore, no fixed or
rotating parts are needed inside of the tube, which
would have to be protected against wear. From an
economical point of view, the centrifugal tube mill
permits the grinding of abrasive materials with very low
and predictable wear costs.
Compared with other grinding machines that reach a
similar degree of material fineness, the centrifugal tube
mill has a low energy requirement.
The special construction of the machine ensures that
any parts requiring maintenance are easily accessible.
A special locking system facilitates the removal of the
grinding tube.

Process
This process flow sheet shows a typical application
for a centrifugal tube mill. The material is fed into the
machine with a pump and a conditioning tank, where
grinding aids can be added if necessary.
To ensure a continuous suspension feed, a second pump
carries out a constrained suction.

Return of oversize
material from the
decanter separation

A decanter installed after the mill ensures a consistent

particle size. Particles which are above a certain size
are separated by the decanter and returned to the
centrifugal tube mill.
For dewatering, a chamber filter press is often used due
to the high fineness of the material.
