ack in 1980, Cosmo

published an appeal that
revolutionised experts
understanding of eating
disorders. Readers with
an irresistible desire to
eat and drink [who] keep their weight
normal by vomiting, were asked to
help psychiatrists compile a paper on
a new and bizarre eating disorder. Two
years later, the British Medical Journal
identied bulimia nervosa as an eating
disorder for the rst time.
This year, Cosmo is partnering with
the charity Beat to continue to
demystify eating disorders youve
heard of such as bulimia and
anorexia and also those that wreck
sufferers lives but dont meet dated
medical criteria, so go undiagnosed.
The most prevalent myth about
eating disorders is that theyre a trivial
problem suffered by silly, attentionseeking girls, says Dr Christopher
Fairburn, who co-authored the report.
Theres also a focus in the media on
people who look like skeletons, and
those who die of anorexia. But while
their cases are extreme, in fact theyre
a tragic minority. Sufferers can look
normal, while behind the scenes their
lives are completely blighted.

The silent disorder

Jenny Cole, 25, looks like any other

healthy young woman, and her body
mass index (BMI) is within the normal
range. But despite her lack of jutting
hips and shadowed collar bones signs
often associated with eating disorders
shes ghting a daily battle with her body.
Two years ago I got a mystery stomach
bug, explains Jenny, a learning support
assistant from Hampshire.Doctors
couldnt work out what was wrong,
but it meant I started losing weight.
Id suffered from anorexia in my teens
and I began using my illness as an
excuse to restrict my eating again.
The idea of losing weight took over
my life I gradually cut out whole food
groups and would weigh myself more
than once a day. If I gained or lost as little
as 100g, it was a really big deal. Id
constantly examine myself in the
mirror, but I simply couldnt see it
when people told me I was getting thin.
I eventually lost 35% of my body
weight and was hospitalised. Doctors fed

THE FACTS
Around 1.6 million people suffer from an
eating disorder in the UK.
In female sufferers over 18, its estimated
that 15% suffer from anorexia, 35% from
bulimia, and the rest from EDNOS.
Anorexia affects more women than men, at
a ratio of 10:1. But men are more likely to be
misdiagnosed and under-referred.
Youre more likely to develop an eating
disorder in your teens, but they can occur
at any age.
40% of individuals surveyed by Beat were
told that their BMI wasnt low enough to
access treatment.
Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of
any psychiatric illness. Its been estimated that
15-20% of sufferers will die prematurely, from
complications or suicide.
The earlier you seek help, the better your
chance of recovering, but gures suggest 20%
of anorexics and 23% of bulimics never will.
Eating disorders are serious mental-health
issues and are very different from disordered
eating, ie, trying different diets or worrying
about your appearance.
If youre worried, your rst port of call
should be your GP or B-eat.co.uk.

me through a tube to see if that made

a difference to my stomach problems,
and when I gained weight, it was clear
that my problem had become more
psychological than physical, despite
my denials that I had an eating
disorder. Even so, the BMI criterion
for anorexia is so low, I was diagnosed
with EDNOS [eating disorder not
otherwise specied] instead.

Taking it seriously

EDNOS may sound like a government

body, but in reality it has become the
catch-all term for numerous eating
disorders, accounting for half of the
1.6 million sufferers in the UK. It
includes any disorder that doesnt t
the criteria for anorexia or bulimia,
including binge-eating disorders and
illnesses that combine symptoms,
such as bingeing and starving.
For an anorexia diagnosis, women
must have a body weight at least 15%
below the expected BMI, due to selfinduced factors such as avoidance of
food, vomiting or excessive exercise.
They must also demonstrate bodyimage distortion (for example, seeing
themselves as fat when theyre not),
fear of fatness and crucially
amenorrhoea (an absence of periods).
For a bulimia diagnosis, patients
must display an irresistible craving
for food, plus evidence of bingeing and
attempts to counteract foods effects
through methods such as purging or
using diet pills. Their weight must also
be well below what is considered normal.
But these strict guidelines mean many
young women arent getting the help
they desperately need.If a person
doesnt meet these criteria exactly, or
displays a mixture of symptoms, they
can be diagnosed with EDNOS, says
Beats communications officer, Rebecca
Field. It can be difficult to diagnose, and
people need to be aware that its a serious
issue EDNOS sufferers arent just being
a bit funny about food. But because
its not as well-known as anorexia or
bulimia, some sufferers dont feel
people understand or take it as
seriously. That needs to change.
In many cases, people arent
getting the help they need soon

illness. Individuals are sometimes

I should listen to that disordered voice.

But it also means I cant talk about my
illness, in case people wont believe me.
As Amys disorder took hold in her
teens, she was refused treatment on the
basis that she wasnt ill enough. Today,
she wonders what impact that decision
had on her health. If something had
been done back then, would I be in
a better place now? she asks.Would
I have needed less treatment overall? And
if experts make that mistake, why should
I expect more than that from the public?

GPs have to get better at. But its hard

getting proper help for anyone with an
eating disorder. Mental health is not
prioritised due to lack of funding and
resources, and that needs to change.

Improving treatment

A major diagnostic change in the US,

which experts hope to see in the UK
in 2015, means absent periods are no
longer required for an anorexia diagnosis.

THE BEST THING ABOUT

BEING SINGLE
Apparently they think it makes them dress better

Insidemensminds
Theres nobody to consult if
you want to do something. A
double bed to yourself is also a
bonus. And sex is usually
exciting because its always with
a new girl, maybe one that Ive
met that evening although
thats not all that frequent.
Calum, 32, Edinburgh
I dont like the person
I am in a relationship.
Ive been with a few
troublesome girls and
dont like being
messed around. I can
be hard work too; I
get bored easily and
frustrated if girls watch
shows like X Factor
and Geordie Shore.
Matt, 26, Aberdeen

Its nice to think a bit more

about myself and do things
to suit me a little more I
think Ive been out with some
fairly high-maintenance
girls! Evan, 27, Glasgow

It means I can do
whatever I want; theres
only so much boozing
a lady can take!
Malcolm, 27, Newcastle
I like that the only person I
can disappoint emotionally,
sexually or in any other way is
myself. And because Im such
a nice person, I forgive myself
very quickly and easily!

One of the best

friends; people you

I enjoy the lack of

commitment. Im an
army officer, so Im
often overseas for
long periods, and
being single means I
dont mess someone
around or have them
worrying and waiting for me. Plus, the
excitement of meeting new girls is fun
too. Fin, 25, Northumberland

I really like being

able to do things on
a whim. Women tend
to like planning
things for you, so
the freedom to do
whatever you want
whenever you want
at the last minute is really enjoyable.
Alasdair, 37, London
Its nice not being

anything. Dean,
26, Manchester
The best thing about
being single is that
pre-rst-date excitement.
Not a lot can beat
that feeling.
James, 26, London
In my experience,
single people dress
and look better,
and are more
sociable, myself
included. When
single, one needs
to make more of an
effort. Sean,

I get to do what
I want when I

the best thing
not having to

25, Plymouth
I like being single because
Im allowed to talk about all
the girls I want to pull on a
night out with my mates.
But Im never actually
brave enough to do it and
then I end up lonely at the
end of the evening
Charlie, 21, London
I guess the thing about
being single is that you
dont feel so locked down.
If you want to move to
another country, you can
just do it without thinking
about the repercussions
for someone else. I actually think I prefer
being in a relationship, though.
Frederik, 25, Sweden
The most positive
thing about being
single for the past
few years is that
its meant I could
concentrate on
getting myself
sorted career-wise.
I dont necessarily
think that makes
me happier,
though. I would
happily start a relationship now if the right
person came along. Ed, 22, Leeds
Theres an aspect of being
controlled when youre with
someone. I think people who
are single want to be in a
relationship and those who
are in a relationship want to
be single. The grass is always greener
David, 27, London
Its nancially benecial
you have more money for
yourself and more time to
think about how to spend it.
Financial planning is easier
when youre single.

Celebrity offspring are able to

swerve all the worst bits about being
a teenager. But is that really such
a blessing, asks Caroline Corcoran

arper Beckhams
life is going to be
different from
mine. This
dawned on me
as I saw photos of her (aged
two) wearing shoes more on
trend than anything I (aged
32) have ever owned.
Obviously, shell drink wine
at posher places, and will
never stand in Primark
trying on a dress over her
coat in a pre-party panic. But

the key differences, I realised,

will come when shes a teen.
Recently, I saw photos of
Teenage Me at my cousins
beach wedding. My younger
sister Gemma and I were
bridesmaids. Gemma looked
perfect; me, aged 14, not so
much. Firstly, Im staving off
a shiny forehead with half a
Rimmel pressed powder and
no other makeup that was
my look for three years.
Then, due to a reluctance to

accept that my boobs had

skipped immediately from
AA to DD, Im wearing a bra
that suggests I have not two
breasts, but four. My newly
wavy hair has failed to relent
to being blow-dried straight
for two hours, reacting to the
humidity in a way that only
one woman (Monica Geller)
would get. Theres also the
unmistakable glint of trauma
in my eyes: my dress is white,
and Id spent an hour trying
to use a tampon for the rst
time, crying and balancing a
leg on the hotel bathtub.
It was a stressful time, but
one that made me appreciate
when I emerged on the other

side; older, wiser and

clutching Ghds and a 32E
from Bravissimo. As for
Teenage Harper, any hair
frizz will be sorted with
home visits from an A-list
hairdresser. No doubt a
makeup artist will live in the
spare bedroom (wing), and
Rigby & Peller will probably
invent a bra just for Harper
that moulds to the shape of
her breasts. When she cries at
not being allowed to go to
Rich from the sixth forms
party and drink Cherry
Lambrini from a mug,
Victoria will sigh but think of
something to make her feel
better. Like,How about we
go to The Oscars instead?
And when her mates y off to
Kavos without her as VB says
shes too young, Harper will
scream that its so unfair. To
cheer her up, Harper will
soon be squealing with
delight as she and DB design
her rst tattoo together.
Shell have celeb company,
of course. If Suri Cruise ever
strolls into the school loos
and eyes sweat patches on her
top, Im sure shell skip the
Mitchum and go straight for
armpit Botox. Harper, Suri
and co probably wont vomit
over a wall after their rst
drinking session. I imagine
Bollinger is less challenging
on a young stomach than our
own heady mix of alcopops
and White Lightning.
The thing is, though, 15
years later, my friends and I
still get hysterical over our
teenage stories and lets not
tell the A-list hairdressers this,
but Adult Me thinks hair
frizz isnt such a bad thing.
Teenage Me would disagree
and look at me like I was
mad. Then again, that might
just be a frown from the pain
of holding a hairdryer for
two hours straight

eminist creatives from

the world of art, fashion,
photography and craft
have a new muse: the
vagina. The female form
is being objectied in
new ways, this time by
women and men keen to represent
it in all its glory. But how do these
images make you feel? We asked two
writers to share their views

IM ALL FOR IT

says writer Tracy Ramsden

The vagina, it seems, is
having something of a
moment. Everywhere
you turn, somebody is
knitting one, crocheting one, baking
one (look away now, Mary Berry),
making earrings of one. Craftivists
mostly female are reclaiming the
vagina in creative new ways. And I
happen to think this is no bad thing.
It may be gauche to be so public about
ones privates, but we live in a world
where an innocent scroll of Facebook
can offer us uninvited, uncensored
glimpses of friends postnatal bodies
(umbilical cord still attached). And the
objectication of womens intimates is
an all-too-familiar narrative. Yet were so
vaginally ill-informed that last year saw
a 45% increase in women enquiring
about aesthetic labiaplasty (ie,designer
vagina surgery). Youre only a Google
search away from the depressing fact
that young women (and men) have a
seriously skewed point of reference for
what they should look like down there.
And its a norm dictated almost entirely
by the likes of YouPorn.
But in a more positive move, groups
of women are banding together and
taking part in traditional craft activities
only not because of their gender, but
because they want to. Take the Shoreditch
Sisters (part of the Womens Institute),
whove embroidered a patchwork vulva
quilt to campaign against female genital
mutilation. While in the US, the
Snatchel Project was devised to protest
against proposed reactionary legislation
affecting women by encouraging them
to knit a uterus and post it to their
congressmen with the message, Hands
off my v-jj. Heres one of your own.
While 2012 saw women take to the
streets in Slutwalks and Muff Marches

to protest against sexual violence and

the pornication of our private parts,
the past 12 months have been cosier,
perhaps in reaction to squeamish
gynophobes. Hipster bakeries are
fashioning vagina cupcakes. YouTube
will teach us how to origami a vagina.
Craft marketplaces Etsy and Folksy are
awash with vagina purses and vulvainspired pendants. Granted, a crocheted
clitoris is no more authentic than the
airbrushed porn version, but when the
message it delivers is an important one,
its reassuring to know its
been lovingly handcrafted
by women, for women. Its
what your nanna would
have wanted.
If the idea of a fanny
revolution gives you the
ick, youre missing the
point. Celebrating the
vagina in all its 3D glory is surely much
healthier than obsessing over Mileys
twerking bottom or Caras thigh gap.
Nobody is saying we should all stick
our phones in our pants and start
sharing intimate seles, but I do think
we should applaud the women who are
brave enough to do so. And if your
sensitive eyes are offended, you dont
have to look, but you really should
listen. For everything else, theres a
knitting pattern.

hoping the day that it gets embarrassed

and goes back in again comes sooner
rather than later.
Dont get me wrong, the liberation of
womens sexuality is obviously a great
thing. But does it really necessitate
aunting your fanny at every possible
opportunity? When confronted with
the group foof-ashing of Project Bush
(an ad agencys attempt to photograph
as many bushes as possible), I cant help
thinking the perpetual spotlight on our
vaginas is getting way out of control.
When Charlottes became the subject
of an oil painting in an episode of Sex
And The City back in 1998, it was
shocking. Eight years later, artist Jamie
McCartneys The Great Wall Of Vagina,
featuring 10 panels of plaster-cast female
parts, was still considered controversial.
Yes, were supposed to embrace our
vaginas, to love them as a natural part of
our bodies. Getting to know our
intimate area and what
makes it tick is a key step
on the path to satisfying
sex, and the demystifying
of our private parts has
certainly helped with that.
And, yes, the message that
every womans vagina is
different is crucial. Even
more important is publicity surrounding
practices such as female genital
mutilation. But theres a difference
between normalising vaginas and
over-egging the pudenda pudding. Does
the body-love message really have to be
hit home with a sledgehammer or
indeed silver balloons spelling out Lily
Allen Has A Baggy Pussy? Whats wrong
with a petition?
In the same way that you sometimes
wonder if sex is a bit of a busmans
holiday for gynaecologists, I can barely
muster any enthusiasm for my own.
And just as the novelty willies handed
out at hen parties dont exactly add
dignity to mens dangly bits, nibbling at
a vagina-shaped cupcake doesnt make
me want to squat over the nearest
mirror in admiration.
We should be proud of every bit of our
bodies. But its time to put our owers
away and accept that approximately
half the world has one, and the majority
of the other half love them. Because,
honestly, the only spotlight I want on
my vagina is my gynaecologists.

Cosmo trend

lia was just seven years old

when, without anaesthetic,
she was held down while
a cutter removed her
clitoris and sewed up what
was left. Her mother told her it would
make her prettier. Years later, Alia was
able to have part of the procedure
reversed, but accepts that nothing will
happen to those involved.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a
growing issue in the UK. An estimated
66,000 British women have undergone
the procedure, and 24,000 girls under 15
are believed to be at risk the highest
number in Europe. Yet despite FGM
being illegal here since 1985, not a
single person has been convicted for it.

The French courts

In France the situation is very different.

When a three-month-old girl bled to
death after being cut in 1982, her parents
were successfully prosecuted, and France
has since led the way in punishing the
crime, despite having weaker laws than
ours. Its had more than 40 FGM trials,
and two practitioners and more than 100
parents have been convicted.
Linda Weil-Curiel is a Paris-based
lawyer and vice-president of the Desert
Flower Foundation, which raises
awareness of FGM. She believes the lack
of justice for British victims stems from
a misplaced sense of respect for different
cultural customs.The parents of these
80

* COSMOPOLITAN MARCH 2014

girls claim FGM is their tradition, and

the British authorities want to be seen to
respect that, she says. But its mutilation.
Its societys duty to protect these girls
as they would any other children. The
French trials have been a very public and
effective deterrent to parents considering
arranging it for their daughters. They also
send the message to girls that they ha
rights as citizens of their country. If
this happened in Britain, it would
make a massive difference to the
number of girls at risk.
However, Amnesty International
has voiced concern that legal
action creates more problems for
victims as FGM is usually instigated
by parents, and girls dont want to
bring criminal charges against them
Anti-FGM campaigner Leyla Husse
who suffered FGM herself says,
Girls are terried of accusing their
families. If theyre going to speak out,
they need to be empowered and
educated so they know FGM is a
violation of their basic rights. We need
to change the system so girls dont have
to give evidence. Social services should
be able to do so on their behalf, as they
would with other kinds of abuse.
6 February is International Day of
Zero Tolerance to FGM.
If youre worried that a child might be
at risk of FGM, call the free 24-hour
FGM helpline on 0800 028 3550 or

Queen of sexy

Jacqueline Gold

I was told my business idea was a fad

now my companys worth 150m
As a 21-year-old doing work experience
at her fathers business (Ann Summers),
Jacqueline Gold had a light-bulb
moment. After going to a Tupperware
party, she realised there was a market
for gatherings where women could buy
sexy lingerie and toys. To launch the
idea, I needed funding from the board
and was met with a lot of resistance, she
says. At the time, nobody believed
women could be empowered in the
bedroom. One male board member
told me, Women just arent interested
in that sort of thing Which in
hindsight probably said more about his
sex life than it did about the idea.
Another said, This is a fad. I give it two

years. But I was getting great feedback

from women, and my gut told me to
keep going. The more the board said it
wouldnt work, the more I wanted to
prove them wrong and I did.
The Ann Summers Party Plan proved
to be a huge success. In her rst year
at the company, Ann Summers had
a turnover of 85,000; today, its
150million, with 145 stores and over
7,000 party planners. Sometimes
adversity is exactly what you need to
push forward, she says. But do your
research; never make up the evidence. If
you can honestly say your idea works
nancially, go for it and enjoy proving
the doubters wrong!

I was called a
dropout, but look
at me now!

Despite blogging for four years as a

hobby, it wasnt until 20-year-old Olivia
Purvis won Best New Fashion Blog at
the 2011 Cosmopolitan Blog Awards that
she felt condent enough to turn it into
a job and dropped out of her English
and communication studies course at
Liverpool University to do so.When
I told my lecturer, she looked at me like
I was mad, suggesting it wasnt a safe
career choice, Olivia recalls.Other
students asked,Why have you dropped
out?, which upset me. I wasnt quitting;
I was starting my own business!
Hearing so much negativity, on top
of the nancial implications (Id paid
for some of my housing and uni fees
up front) made it a huge decision, but
Ive never regretted it. My fashion and
style blog Whatoliviadid.
com now has around
25,000 visitors a month
(plus I get paid from
advertising), and Ive done
everything from speaking
at conferences in Las
Vegas and Cambridge
University to working
with Miss Selfridge and
H&M. It was denitely
worth following my
heart. Who else gets paid
to do what they love?

Olgas hot
business idea
paid off

I turned my hobby into a day job!

When Olga Allon, 37,
handed in her notice to
launch a Bikram (hot)
yoga business, everybody
thought she was crazy.
Id been working as an
architect for three years
on top of seven years
training when I
decided to retrain as a
yoga teacher. I loved
yoga, especially Bikram,
and wanted to set up my
own yoga business, but
needed to qualify as a

teacher rst. When I

resigned, my boss and
colleagues asked why I
was leaving such a secure,
well-paid job. My dad
said, Ive put you
through university for
seven years to become a
yoga teacher?
After qualifying, I
began looking for
studio premises. A year
and a half later during
which time I was paid
per yoga class I opened

my rst studio. After that,

I opened my second, and
by 2011 I had three
London studios
including celebs clients
like Andy Murray, Elle
Macpherson and Florence
Welch. If youve got a
good idea you believe in,
dont stop pushing for it.
Whatever it is, there will
always be doubters, but
theyre essential and help
ensure your idea is
completely watertight.

The Dragons told me I couldnt crack

non-spill dog bowl in 2008 on Dragons

an excuse to hold court. When talking, be
aware of your bosss body language
dont drone on if theyre looking around
the room and, equally, be aware of
yours. I prefer face-to-face contact to
emails, but if youre worried about

But we usually do it

Be accepting of new ideas and ways of

JOB DIETICIAN

A typical day
Ive always been interested in
food, so after my A-levels I did a
four-year nutrition and dietetics
course at the University of Surrey,
which involved spending nine
months as a trainee dietician in a
hospital. I loved working with
the patients and developing my
people skills. I learnt theres a ne
balance between being caring
and sensitive, and ensuring they
actually listen to your advice.
I stayed with the NHS for
three years before completing
a PhD in human nutrition and
going to work for the British
Nutrition Foundation, where
I developed campaigns and
strategies similar to ve-a-day.
Now Im a freelance consultant.
Im usually up by 7am to get
my two young boys ready for
school and x something simple
for breakfast yogurt or peanut
butter on wholemeal toast. If I
dont have meetings, I might
test meals for my upcoming
recipe book, or comment in
the media on health trends. I
hold most of my consultations
at home. When it comes to
losing weight healthily, the
key is balance and exibility.
Its important to give clients
a plan they can stick to; my

consultations can involve

anything from writing shopping
lists to demonstrating how to
prepare meals. Sadly theres no
magic wand for losing weight
it calls for hard work, discipline
and determination. But I allow
one treat meal a week the
thought of never having pizza
can be too daunting. Lunch is
usually a chicken salad with
brown rice or a stew 80% of
the time my diet is very healthy.
Ive worked with lots of
household names, from Ewan
McGregor to Chelsea FC. Sports
people can be very superstitious
about food if they had a
banana smoothie before a win,
theyll often want one every
time they compete.
When Im working to a tight
deadline, Ill put the kids to bed

and carry on working until

midnight sometimes. Other days,
I nish earlier and go to an armybootcamp class or my running
club. If Im out for dinner with
friends, every conversation
usually starts with, Ooh, what
are you having? People always
want to know. Most of the time
its actually pretty boring.

The good
I love the variety. One minute Im
putting together a presentation;
the next Im on TV talking
about celebrity diets.

The bad

Its frustrating when people with

no qualications think they
know better. And its worrying
that anyone can Google anything
and call themselves an expert.

STILL
INTERESTED?
Qualications
I recommend
studying sciences
at A-level, then
taking an integrated
degree in nutrition
and dietetics or a
degree in nutrition
and a postgraduate
diploma in dietetics.
Salary A dietician
starts on around
21,000 working
for the NHS, but
as a freelancer
I earn around
50,000 a year.
Key skills A love
of science and food
is important. Being
empathetic and
understanding also
comes in handy.

INTRODUCING

I had 24 hours on a plane to think of

something witty and funny to say, but
as soon as I saw her I lost the ability to
speak, so I just kissed her on the lips.

I downed two glasses of champagne

at the airport bar. When I saw him, we
both found that words werent enough;
we kissed for ages.

When did you realise you were in love?

I knew as soon as I saw her. I think
we both knew before we even met,
although neither of us dared to say so.

On our second day together, I

suddenly realised I could quite easily
spend the rest of my life with him.

What have been the major milestones in your relationship so far?

Em visited me in London a few
months later, and met all my friends
and family. Then, in February 2011, we
got married in Australia, after which
Emily moved to the UK.

The day Dan proposed was pretty

special he met me at Heathrow
airport and got down on one knee.
We try to mark our anniversaries by
travelling somewhere special together.

What do people think about how you met?

Hardly any of my friends batted an
eyelid at my unique boy-meets-girl
story Ive always been spontaneous.

Lilac is a cold shade that needs

warm, dewy skin to pop
against, says Kenneth. So rub
a cream bronzer where the sun
naturally hits and create a halo
of warmth round the eyes by
applying a warm peachy beige
from the socket lines up to the
brows, as well as under the
bottom lashes. Then dab
lilac-pink on the centre of your
top lids, so it ashes when you
blink, and top with soft,
shimmery lilac all over your
lids. Paint your lips lilac too if
you want to avoid an excess of
blue in the colour (which can
make you look frozen), add
raspberry-pink lipstick until
youre happy with the shade.

TOP, SARA C. EARRINGS, KATIE ROWLAND

Theres an impressionist painter

in all of us; you just need to let
her out! says Kenneth. This
dappled eye isnt symmetrical and
thats what makes it pretty just
make sure you wear it with
condence and style. Using
brushes, I dabbed on a lavender
cream colour and a heather
powder shadow as the mood
took me, taking care to step back
after every dab to ensure the end
result looked deliberate, not like
an explosion in a paint factory. I
kept the lips a pale baby pink to
keep all the focus on the eyes.

Best for

Top-dollar romance
Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa, Wiltshire
(Lucknampark.co.uk)

Why? Just outside Bath, tucked away in 500 acres of

parkland, sits this awe-inspiring ve-star country house.
As soon as you turn into the mile-long drive and the
gates close behind you, you know youre in for a treat.
With wood-panelled libraries, elegant Georgian
bedrooms and staff everywhere, this place is your very
own Downton Abbey. In cool contrast, the spa itself has
an ultra-modern, Zen-like vibe, complete with plunge
pools and a wellbeing house for alternative treatments
such as sunlight therapy. Our organic Ila back treatment
was dreamy and even came with its own soundtrack!
We loved The real log re in our bedroom
falling asleep to that comforting crackle and glow
was totally uh-mazing.

Cosmo tip People come from miles around for the

Michelin-starred food, so book early for the dinner of
your dreams.

Best for

An empty-yourmind getaway
The Headland Hotel and Spa,
Cornwall (Headlandhotel.co.uk)
Why? The Atlantic air mixed with the
splendour of this four-star hotel and
ocean-view spa immediately relaxes
your mind. After I tried The Dreaming
treatment, all I could do was stare at the
sea and surfers from the terrace bar. Its
a top-to-toe experience, including full
body massage, scrub and facial, using
Spiezia, the Cornish beauty range,
designed to put you into a deeply
relaxed, dream-like state. If your budget
doesnt stretch to a hotel stay, a spa day
is a must. The Indian head massage was
the best Ive ever had.

We loved The hot footrest in the

Cornish salt steam room and underoor
heating in our en-suite bathroom cosy,
cosy, cosy.

Cosmo tip Theres no need to leave

the hotel except for a walk on the
beach; youre already in the best spot
in Newquay.

Best for

The full A-list experience

Bulgari Spa at the Bulgari Hotel,
London (Bulgarihotels.com)
Why? Created for the most demanding (and least broke) of
punters, this spa means business when it comes to treatments.
ESPAs aroma-therapeutic products star alongside hi-tech
equipment and cosmeceuticals. Fitness comes courtesy of the
celeby Bodyism team and you can even get your soul made
over with an emotional healer. My customised Delux Facial
involved an enzyme peel, mesotherapy (vitamins injected with
a sort of staple gun not kidding), LED light therapy and
massage. My therapist was extremely knowledgeable and
I came out looking 20 years younger. Priceless!
We loved The pre-facial face-mapping, where skin is
assessed with a special shows-up-everything light to make sure
it gets exactly what it needs.

Cosmo tip Book in two or more hours worth of treatments

and you get a day pass to the exclusive heat experiences, pools
and gym. Who knows which celeb you might be doing laps with
in the 25m swimming pool!

Best for

Homely hedonism
The Morritt Country House
Hotel & Garage Spa, Co Durham
(Thegaragespa.co.uk)

Why? Picture cosy armchairs and Irish coffee in front of the

re. After a great sleep, we spent the day in the adjoining
Garage Spa. My hot-stone massage was simply perfect, as was
taking in the scenery from the outdoor steel hot tub.

We loved All the locally made, natural products, available

everywhere from the restaurant to the spa.

Cosmo
o tip Check out the UKs rst Shepherds Hut Log
Sauna, modelled on a cosy 19th-century shepherds hideaway.

Best for

A traditional retreat
Spa Illuminata at Daneseld House, Bucks
(Daneseldhouse.co.uk)

Why? Daneseld House is a breathtaking building with

stunning views of the River Thames. The Grand Hall offers
squidgy sofas, a log re and tapestry-lined walls. We ate
seriously good posh nosh in the Orangery. Treatment-wise,
I had the well-executed Daneseld Experience, combining an
Aromatherapy Associates body treatment and facial.

We loved The cosy, well-stocked cocktail bar perfect for

retoxing after a day in the spa.

Cosmo tip Pay the extra 2.50 to get your breakfast in bed.

Best for

An anniversary escape
Gilpin Hotel and Lake House, Lake
District (Thegilpin.co.uk)

We loved The owery Joules wellies and socks

that we were given to wear with our robes for
walking through the woods.

Cosmo tip Book an afternoon Jetty Spa Trail so

youll be in the hot tub for sunset. When it gets
dark, the walkway is lit with candles and it feels
even more romantic.

Now go there for less!

Why? This small, family-owned hotel is set in 100

acres of woodland with a private lake. From the
moment you arrive, the super-friendly staff are at
your beck and call. The rooms overlooking the lake
have jaw-dropping views and are denitely worth
asking for. Not the biggest of spas, but the Jetty

private spa journey just for couples. Every location

7 Messy plaits

3 Neon orange lips

1 Feathery lashes

There are a lot of doe-eyes

around: thick, dened lashes,
says Macs Terry Barber. The new
Articial Aubergine shade of
Macs cult mascara really brightens
the eye. Use the wand tip to coat
each lash. Skip eyeliner; this trend
is best worn with esh-toned
eyeshadow or bare skin.

Orange is really hip, says makeup

legend Gucci Westman, and
her crayon of choice Revlon
ColorBurst Matte Balm in
Mischievous is now in the shops.
Worried about orange playing up
any yellow in your teeth? Go for a
pink-tinged shade, eg, bright coral.

Were obsessed with Antonio

Corral Caleros overlapping,
tangled plaits at Rachel Zoe:
Apply Moroccanoil Molding
Cream to dry hair, then blast with
a hairdryer from underneath to
tangle it. Clip up the front
section, braid the rest, then
release the top section and tuck
random strands into your braid
so it ends up wider on top.

8 Rock-chic matt

Makeup artist James Kaliardos

was inspired by LAs glam metal
scene for the rock-tastic Rodarte
show. If youre not a fan of gloss
or pretty, take a cue from this
sexy, suede-look trend. New Nars
Matte Multiple gives that velvety
nish: smudge on to your lips and
cheeks with your ngers and add
lots of messy black eyeliner.

9 Sea-shined
hair
4 Dreamy bronze

Charlotte Tilbury created a perfect

summer makeup look at Etro: I
used various brown shades, with
a gloss layer for a slightly wet
effect. This cream eyeshadow
from Laura Mercier does the job
in one sweep. Just add chocolatebrown mascara and bronzer.

Hairstylist Mark Hampton

used lashings of this new
Toni & Guy serum to create
slicked-back ponytails at the
Ashley Williams show. The
key is high-shine, not wet,
and this has a barely-there
feel so you can add loads,
he explains. Knot fabric or a
scarf halfway down the pony
for a holiday vibe.

2 Holiday skin

Top of our spring wish list? Dayglow skin and were talking
golden rather than tanned. All
you need is clever, light-boosting
No7 Instant Illusions Rapid
Radiance Balm, which makes
skin look fresh and summery. Its
great skin in a bottle!

Theres a standard look for brows

this season, says Maybellines
Sharon Dowsett. Blunt, straight
and dark even black. The brows
at Erdem were inspired by
schoolboys: full and a bit feral!
This genius new Benet product
is a brush-on bre gel that adds
little bres to give you mega brows
that still look like your own.

6 Blue eyeliner

If you make one change in

your beauty routine this season,
swap your black eyeliner for
blue, says Sharon. Blue
eyeliner is like denim you
can throw it on casually with
anything. Sharons favourite
product is this incredibly
smooth Maybelline kohl. Trace
it along the waterline, inside
the bottom lid of your eye, and
see what a difference it makes.

10 Flip your parting

Heres a ve-second style update:
blast your hair with Sebastian
Professional Drynamic volumising
dry shampoo, ruffle the roots
with your ngertips and pull your
hair into an extreme side parting,
leaving loads of punky volume
at the crown. N

Sex therapy

change-your-life sex advice, ask Cosmos sex psychotherapist, Rachel Morris

I have zero sex drive

PHOTOGRAPHS ASHA FULLER, MARCIO DEL NERO. ILLUSTRATION KATY WAKEFIELD. RACHEL REGRETS SHE CANNOT ANSWER YOUR LETTERS PERSONALLY

Since my pregnancy Ive lost all interest in sex. Our

daughter is nearly three and my (highly sexual)
husband is piling the pressure on. He doesnt want a
sexless marriage, but I cant force it can I?
No, but perhaps you can cajole it. Pregnancy, childbirth,
postnatal weight gain and stretch marks dont exactly
add up to phwoar for any woman. And having a baby
is overwhelming. But you have to make room for your
adult self. Go on dates together and focus on recalling
each other before the baby. Decide to nd your way
back: read an erotic novel or buy something that makes
you feel sexy. Once youve reconnected with your desire,
you can ease your husband back into the picture.

He treats me
like a toy

Im missing out on great sex

My boyfriend and I split up for a while and I had a ing with
an older guy, who showed me what great sex is. Im glad to be
back with my ex, but the sex that used to seem OK now makes
my heart sink. What do I do?
When youre old and wise, the only things youll regret are the
things you didnt do. You can a) teach him. This isnt a quick
solution, so pass if youre impatient or youll only add frustration
to your disappointment. Positive reinforcement has more staying
power. Describe what you want more of (Mmm, thats good but I
like it best when you do it like this). Or b) lead him: you make
the decisions. But dont tread on his ego; it can have a wilting effect.
Or c) leave him. Theres no shame in accepting that sometimes
theres just no going back.

My boyfriends
always trying to
make me do things
I dont want to
in bed, and uses
language I hate.
I try to stop him,
but he wont listen.
I want us to make
love but hes not
romantic at all.
When you say you
try to stop him,
have you said, Im
not enjoying this
please stop? Or,
That language is a
real turn-off for me
please dont use
it? Trying implies
youre only hinting
at how you feel,
hoping hell read
your signals, which

Fact number one: all women smell of
something as do men. Fact number
two: usually this is perfectly natural.
Fact three is that most women dread
having the kind of conversation

a stronger odour, and it can also be
affected by eating strong-tasting
foods, among other factors. But,
unless theres a bacterial imbalance,
it shouldnt be unpleasant. If it is, she
may have some kind of infection and
chances are shell deal with it.

vs

...the big

debate

In the ongoing Whats healthy, whats not? battle, sugar has

recently stolen fats Nutrition Bad Guy title. But is it a fair ght?

nti-sugar stories
have hit the
headlines lately,
with warnings
that its as
dangerous for you as alcohol
and tobacco. Last month, obesity
experts launched a campaign to
have the sugar content of some
food and drinks cut by up to 30%.
The trouble is, theres
abundant, conicting info on its
alternatives, such as agave syrup
(its low-GI but high in fructose,
FYI). And the controversial diet
books that tell us to tuck into
large amounts of fat certainly
raise the red ag where heart
health is concerned. Here,
nutritionist Lyndsey Heffernan
gives us the facts

168

* COSMOPOLITAN MARCH 2014

My friend says sugar

is worse for you than
fat. Is it? Jessica, 30

LYNDSEY SAYS In general dietary terms,

neither is worse per se, as our bodies

require both for different reasons. But
the rise of processed foods has created
monster versions of them, which play
havoc with our health. Heres the skinny:
FAT Theres no official recommended
dietary fat intake, but it should account
for 20-35% of your energy (calorie) intake.
This means limiting foods high in
saturated fat, such as biscuits, cakes,
pizza, fried foods and potato chips.
Good fats, from oily sh, nuts, seeds,
avocados and vegetable oils, are needed
to maintain healthy joints, hormones,
skin even a healthy nervous system.
Saturated fats in meat and dairy can
help support brain function and calcium

absorption, but too much (over 20g per

day) can clog your arteries.
Trans fats, found in processed and fried
foods, are so articial that your body
cant process them effectively. This leads
to bad LDL cholesterol, clogs arteries
and spells disaster for heart health.
SUGAR Sugars can be classed as either
complex or simple carbohydrates.
Complex carbohydrates from veg,
wholegrains, beans and pulses are
broken down into more simple sugars,
which your body uses for slow, sustained
energy release. This type of sugar should
form the majority of your energy intake.
Simple carbohydrates from white
bread, cakes and biscuits dont require
this level of breakdown, so they hit your
bloodstream fast, causing energy
uctuations that can lead to heart disease,
type-2 diabetes and obesity. So choose
complex varieties wherever possible.

Sex
Can I cut down on
sugar while still
satisfying my
sweet tooth? Lauren, 31

ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY LOU CHEUNG, JESSICA PARRY AND MARTHA CLIFF. PHOTOGRAPHS GETTY, ALAMY, ISTOC

LYNDSEY SAYS Yes! Its simply

a matter of retraining your taste buds
to appreciate the natural sweetness
of foods. Cut out all sweet treats for
a week and youll get the idea even
carrots will taste sweeter. If you dont
want to cut out sugar altogether, make
smarter snack choices. Dark chocolate
is richer than milk chocolate, so youll
need less to satisfy you; eat it with a few
nuts and the protein will slow the effect
the sugar has on your bloodstream. And
I challenge anyone with a sweet tooth
not to love the taste of chopped fruit
with natural yogurt.

I want to maintain
my weight. Is it
better to follow
a low-fat or low-sugar
diet? Rachel, 28

LYNDSEY SAYS For many years, fat was

public enemy No.1 for dieters, but

recent thinking points the nger at
sugar. This is the reason many modern
weight-loss plans ban all carbohydrates
even fruit to force our bodies to use
up their existing fat stores.
Cutting out whole food groups is
extreme, but there is something in
this. When we eat sugar, it triggers the
release of insulin, the hormone needed
to process sugar from our blood into
our cells, where it can be used for
energy. If we eat too much sugar, insulin
stores it as fat hence we gain weight.
So these diets reverse this process by
banning the sweet stuff.
The danger is that your intake of
artery-clogging fat could increase as a
result. And low-fat products wont help;
theyre often packed with sugar and
articial sweeteners.
If you dont want to lose weight, its
best to follow a low-GI eating plan
(wholegrains, lean meat, poultry, sh,
pulses, nuts, seeds, fruit and vegetables)
to regulate your insulin response and
therefore your appetite and weight.

Ive recently gone blonde

for the rst time and
have noticed that some
people are acting differently
around me. Its crazy. Can
hair colour really make such
a difference? Or could it be
that Im behaving differently?
Interestingly, there is a
science behind reactions to
blonde hair. Going back 11,000
years, hair colour probably
played a role when it came
to sexual selection. In those
days, hunting for meat was
dangerous and many men died.
The theory goes that this was
a time of intense sexual rivalry
between females, as they had
to compete for limited males
and for a favourable share of
meat. When given the choice,
cavemen chose blondes, as they
stood out from their rivals.
Another evolutionary reason
is that blonde hair can be
interpreted as a sign of youth
and, therefore, reproductive
tness. This is because, as our
hair gets darker with age, postmenopausal women rarely keep
the golden locks they had when
they were younger.
But its not just cavemen
who favour blondes. Research

My boyfriend of four years dumped me.
He says he cant offer me a future and is
holding me back from marriage and kids.
Im 27 and hes 45. I said I dont want
these things as we both have them from
previous relationships. Why now, after
our years together? Im devastated.
Has he recently had a birthday? Or a sexual
hiccup? My guess is that something has
alarmed him about the age gap; he feels
himself to be, if not old, over middle age.
He needs your understanding and assurance
of his sexiness and energy. If he cant be
consoled and insists on a break-up,
remember you are still young; you have time
to change your mind about everything.

My boyfriend, whos 32, has never had a
job. He has type-2 diabetes because he
only eats junk food. How can I make
him see his lack of drive for health or a
career will be the death of him? Our
relationships not great, but Im worried.
He requires professional help. The best you
can do for him is rst to go to a website
where diabetics learn about their ailment
and discuss it. Show him the results of your
research, then take his hand and lead him
to life-saving counselling. I hope your
concern for him is as a friend. He badly
needs one as he is no friend to himself. But
he is certainly not now, and may never be,
ready for a committed relationship.

THOUGHT
FOR
THE DAY

I found out from my husbands phone that hes

been having an affair. I told him to get out of my
life but we have three children and he doesnt want
to. He said he still loves me and asked me to give
him a chance to prove himself. I love him too but
now I feel that I cant trust him like I did before. Will
he go back to the other woman?
Its up to your husband to give you time and reason
to trust him again. Its up to you to preserve and
strengthen the love he claims for you and your family.
Be positive about a fresh start for you both. Put sexy
new activities into your relationship. Have new kinds of
fun together and with your children. If ever again he
rides off the rails, then you can tell him to get lost
without a second thought. But what you have together
is worth a second chance. So try to control expressing
angry suspicions. An innocent man or woman who is
being tortured by a partners jealousy can think, what
the hell? Might as well earn it!

lesson for March is simple:
to get the respect of the
group, put the group rst.
Animals bring you closer to
a man with whom you have
little in common its hard
to resist a good cause or a
cute creature!

Virgo 23 AUG-22 SEP

Leo 23 JULY-22 AUG

Libra 23 SEP-22 OCT

Let changes happen when

it comes to travel or foreign
connections; its time to live
fully in the present. You can
achieve huge things if you
work harder for others in
a volunteer or charity role.
Do everything necessary to
achieve your body ambition.
And trust your instincts
when it comes to your ex.

A work or unpaid project will

inspire you so much youll
want to give up weekends.
Check eBay or car-boot prices
for bargains and possible
prots. A hesitant man will
turn his behaviour round if
youre honest. Find out why
a crafty female (in both senses
of the word) has such an issue.

COSMO
ONLINE

Open your mind to what

other people have to say
about health and beauty in
order to get the best results.
Dont assume that relatives
will do anything you
wouldnt take on board
yourself. Rein yourself in
with some sexual self-control
for as long as you need to,
then move on.

You can help other people at

work but you need allies and
backers. You can change the
world, one person at a time;
take on the responsibility.
Youll have new opportunities
in love if you dont let others
sway you and only heed
yourself. Youve also hit a
fork in the road with cash.

A stuck period in your life

with one man is nearly over,
but you need to snap up a
chance to change things with
another female in his world.
Wonderful group chemistry
is around you as everyone
believes in their original
goals; pursue success or
money within the group and
see that everyone recommits.
Why get involved in politics
between friends right now?
Keep your motives pure in
love and you can be smug
about the results. Much
happier times are on the way
thanks to a European link,
but keep building a secure
foundation. The best eating
plan ever converts you.

Capricorn 22 DEC-19 JAN

Think carefully about your

internet prole; it could
cause confusion both for
yourself and others unless
you are genuine. In love,
take the reality check thats
coming, process the emotions
and move on to happiness.
Look at how youre spending
your weekends and who
with. Its a health issue!

Aquarius 20 JAN-18 FEB

Be self-reliant at work to
counteract an unhelpful
female. Youll get the allies
you need if you put your
ideas across condently. You
have just enough stamina
to keep persisting with a
lover or friend, despite their
addiction to fantasyland.
Theyll come back to earth.

Hannah Evans, Winchester

Ive been published in The Guardian and Good Life
earning 400. And now Ive got my first book
published by Bloomsbury called MOB Rule: Lessons
Learned by a Mother of Boys. The Writers Bureau
course provided me with structure, stopped my
procrastination but most importantly it provided the
impetus to try something different.
Michael Foley, Essex
Completing The Writers Bureau course has made it
possible for me to attain my life-long ambition of
becoming a published writer. The level of success I
have achieved has far outweighed what I was hoping
for when beginning the course. I have now had
seventeen books published with two more under publication at the
moment.
Jane Isaac, Northamptonshire
When I started the Writers Bureau course, I
wanted to explore avenues for my writing and
develop and strengthen my personal style. I had no
idea that it would lead to me being a published
writer of novels and short stories. I still pinch
myself when I receive emails and messages from readers whove
enjoyed my work or when I give talks to book clubs and visit
bookstores to do signings. These are magical moments that have
changed my life my dream has come true.
Please send me details on how to become a successful published writer:
