Background
The most rich C stock in the world (1,023 Mg/ha), but less attention
compare with other ecosystem of humid tropical forest (Donato et al.,
2012)

Indonesia is the largest

areas in Southeast Asia
which is the highest
biodiversity in the world

Threatened by
LULCC

Mangrove
Forest

Need a monitoring

(overharvesting,
aquaculture, etc.)

Field data solely is insufficient

It has an ecological and

economical function

Remote Sensing is
desirable

Mangrove management in Indonesia

Ministry of Forestry (MoF) has the major authority to manage

the mangrove resources in Indonesia

Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fishery (MMAF) concern with

the mangrove resources for the well-known important
contribution of the mangrove to the coastal fishery

Annual updating status of forest since 2012, including

mangrove by MoF using RS data

Indonesia mangrove area is about 2,8 million ha (MoF)

One map policy program is in an effort to build a unified

reference standard, databases, and geoportal.
Including Biomass mapping

Mangrove biomass mapping in Indonesia

The National Coordinating Agency for
Surveys and Mapping
(BAKOSURTANAL): mapped mangrove
areas of Indonesia using Landsat (2009)

Estimated biomass is mostly done in

dry land forests as moist tropical
forest

ALOS PALSAR recommended for

mangrove mapping due to its
effectiveness (Rocha, 2012)
HV band is better correlated with
AGB (Surati et al., 2013) compared to
other SAR band.
Joint SAR and ETM increase the
accuracy of biomass estimation
and LU classification (wijaya et al.,
2009)

No established national
program for monitoring of
biomass or carbon stock of
mangrove forest using RS

ALOS PALSAR is more accurate for

high biomass (Enghalrt., 2011)

Mangrove biomass mapping in Indonesia

By combining the existing biometric techniques and soil
sampling to calculate the variation of above and below
carbon stocks (Donato et al., 2012)

Monograph allometric (MoF, 2012)

Remote sensing Data

Direct calculate forest biomass approach

(Goetz., 2009)

Proposed prototype project objectives

Mapping mangrove forest of Indonesia using RS

Assessment of mangrove forest changes using RS

To determine the model for mangrove forest biomass and

carbon stock in Indonesia using RS

Benefit of the activity

Developing monitoring system of mangrove forest,

biomass and carbon stocks in Indonesia using RS

Recognizing the phenomenon of carbon stock changes

for a several strategic areas of mangrove forests in
Indonesia using RS

Optimizing the use of RS data for monitoring natural

resources of Indonesia.
