UNIT-1
a) What is hydrostatic law?
2
b) Derive expression for h* for an inclined surface.
7
c) A vertical gap 22mm wide of infinite extent contains a fluid of viscosity
2.0NS/m2 and specific gravity 0.9. a metallic plate 1.2mx1.2mx0.2cm is to
be lifted up with a constant velocity of 0.15m/s, through the gap. If the
plate is in the middle of the gap, find the force required. The weight of the
plate is 40 N.
7
d) A U-tube manometer is used to measure the pressure of water in a pipe the
which is in excess of atmospheric pressure. The right limb of the
manometer contains mercury and is open to atmosphere. The contact
between water and mercury is in the left limb. Determine the pressure of
water in the main line, if the difference in level of mercury in the limbs of
U-tube is 10 cm and the free surface of mercury is in level with the centre
of the pipe.

UNIT-2
What is stream function and velocity potential?
2
A 25cm dia pipe carries oil specific gravity 0.9 at a velocity of 3m/s. at
another section the diameter is 20cm. find the velocity at this section and
also mass rate of flow of oil.
7
For a two-dimensional potential flow, the velocity potential is given by
= x (2y 1). Determine the velocity and value of at P(4,5).
7
Explain the types of fluid flow.
7

UNIT-3
a) State Bernoullis theorem. What is Eulers equation of motion?
2
b) Derive Eulers equation of motion along a stream line and hence derive the
Bernoullis theorem.
7

c) Water is flowing through a pipe having diameters 200 mm and 100 mm

at sections 1 & 2 respectively. The rate of flow through the pipe is 35 L/s.
the section 1 is 2m above datum and section 2 is 4m above datum. If the
pressure at sec-1 is KN/m, find the intensity of pressure at sec- 2
7
d) A horizontal venturimeter with inlet and throat dia. 30 cm and 15

cm respectively is used to measure the flow of water. The reading of

differential manometer connected to the throat and inlet is 20cm of
mercury. Determine the rate of flow. Take Cd=0.98
7

UNIT-4
a) What are the types of losses in flow through pipes?
2
b) In a pipe of diameter 350 mm and length 75 m water is flowing at

a velocity of 2.8 m/s. Find the head lost due to friction using :
(i) Darcy-Weisbach formula;
(ii) Chezys formula for which C = 55
Assume kinematic viscosity of water as 0.012 stoke.
7
c) Compare pipe flow and open channel flow.
7
d) Derive expression for head loss due to sudden enlargement. 7
UNIT-5
a) What is an orifice and what are the 3 coefficients of orifice.
2
b) Derive expression for discharge for triangular notch.
7
c) Water discharges at the rate of 98.2 litre/s through a 12 cm diameter

vertical sharp-edged orifice placed under a constant head of 10m. A

point on the jet measured from the vena contracta of jet has coordinates 4.5m in horizontal and 0.54m in vertical. Determine the
coefficients Cv Cc and CD
7
d) An internal mouthpiece having 80mm throat diameter is discharging
water under a constant head of 8m. Find the discharge through mouth
piece when:
(i) mouth piece is running free (ii) mouth piece is running full.
