Organisms are dependent on the structure and functions of cells to live, grow, respond to the environment, and reproduce.
1.
Students will understand the importance of cell theory in determining life on Earth.
2.
Students will know that cells have structures that have specific functions which contribute to many processes.
3.
Students will learn about cellular respiration and photosynthesis and how these chemical reactions help sustain life.
Unit Summary:
We have learned about the smaller scale structures that make up the non-living systems of the world. Now, we will be delving into the realm of
the basic unit of life, which are cells. In this unit, you will learn about what makes up living organisms, their structures, and the processes that
happen that help sustain life as we know it. We will be doing different investigative and modeling activities to support each concept, which will
help develop not only your content knowledge but also your scientific practices. With our overall theme of interactions in mind, you will be able to
explain how these systems work together to create everything that we consider to be a living thing in this planet
What makes up every living thing in this world, and how does it all interact and come together to create life? How are we able to walk, run, go to
school, eat food, and communicate with others? Our dependence on something so small has such a big influence in how we go about doing our
daily activity, and we often forget that it takes many perfectly executed processes and interactions to helps us do the things we do every day. We
will be looking at the microscopic level of these organisms and progress towards the bigger picture in which we will make connections as to why
the smallest things do matter.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
KWL Chart What do we already know
about cells and their interactions with
each other?
Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:
Using different scientific
tools to gather evidence,
students will define the
three tenets of the cell
theory and support their
importance in
determining what a cell
does.
Acceptable Evidence
(Assessments):
KWL
Microscope
Graphic
Organizer
Exit Ticket
Lesson Activities:
Teacher Lecture
The teacher will lead most discussion delivering concepts to students and using videos to
further support these concepts. The students will be engaging in discussions through
given questions that will elicit prior knowledge and move on to gain new knowledge.
Presentation is going to be Prezi based and will most likely take up the period. Before the
lecture, the students will be doing a KWL for the teacher to know about their prior
knowledge. During lecture, students will be filling up a graphic organizer as substitution
for traditional note taking.
Microscopes
Incorporated in this teacher lecture is a microscope practice activity that will help students
learn more about cells and increase their ability to use microscopes, After the teacher
models how to use one, they will all go to their lab stations to practice with prepared
slides. They will also fill up a graphic organizer that will help them identify each
microscopic organism.
Exit Ticket
The students will give a quick sentence response to one of the exit ticket questions.
Lesson 2
Student Learning
Objective:
Students will identify
major organelles in a cell
and be able to apply
their functions towards
two higher level
processes.
Lesson 3
Acceptable Evidence:
Research
Documents
Webercise
Lesson Activities:
Videos and Online Resources Webercise
Students will use teacher-provided resources to complete a webercise. Some components
of the webercise includes fill in the blank, Venn diagram, and short answer response
questions. The Webercise will take the whole period and will help them understand the
functions of each organelle. This information will help them fill up their research
documents for their cell organelle election activity.
Student Learning
Objective:
Students will use what
they have learned about
chemical reactions to
visualize cellular
respiration and
photosynthesis,
incorporating molecular
interactions as
background to how these
processes allow life to
exist in the planet.
Acceptable Evidence:

Exam
Lesson Activities:
Photosynthesis vs Cellular Respiration: Graphic Organizer
Students will learn about photosynthesis and cellular respiration through a graphic
organizer activity which will have them create a mind map using given resources. This will
allow them to take charge of what important information they need to get from a website.
They will have access to a scoring guide to help them understand what needs to be done
to complete the assignment.
After the graphic organizer activity, the teacher will lead the students to creating flow
maps that will allow them to visualize the processes of photosynthesis and cellular
respiration. These maps will help them remember the different aspects of the process,
including where it happens, the products and reactants, and the chemical equation. With
all these, they will be finishing up their lab worksheets dealing with the Elodea lab as well
as finish a study guide that will give them preparation for the final exam.
