Part A: Program Evaluation
Executive Summary:
Port Wentworth Elementary is part of Savannah Chatham county
public school system and they are embracing the use of technology
and flourishing with their performance in the district. The technology
specialists and technology coaches have huge responsibilities
throughout the district, but are provided with financial support when it
comes to getting emerging technologies in the schools. Port
Wentworth has a lot of potential of using great resources and tools in
the classroom, but there is a struggle with getting teachers trained to
use some of the emerging technologies available. The technology
specialist at Port Wentworth Elementary has a lot of great equipment
to use, but there is room for improvement.

Methods:
I used a variety of methods to collect my data like interviews and
observations with my media specialist, technology coach, and media
clerk, along with researching the schools website. I completed
interviews with my media specialist and observations in the
media/technology center. See Appendix at the end.
Center Context and Goals:
The mission and vision for the district is to ignite passion for
learning and teach at high levels. From school to the world: All
students are prepared for productive futures. So like the school
district, Port Wentworth has the same mission and vision in mind.
The media center at Port Wentworth has been up and running for
many decades, but it had a transformation remodel about two years
ago. Port Wentworth is a Pre-Kindergarten through second grade

school, so with the early childhood students the entire school had to
under go some remodeling a couple of years ago. Mrs. Donnelly has
been working with the school for about 15 years and even though she
likes technology resources, her main passion is her love of books and
reading. She said her goal is to just sit and read with the students, so
that they can encompass that love of reading like her. Mrs. Donnelly
has many responsibilities in the media center, since she is the media
and technology specialist. She updates the school website on a
weekly/bi-weekly basis, she gives teacher an additional resource where
they come to the media center for a lesson once a week, she organizes
all of the books, title one materials, and pieces of technology
throughout the whole school, she is in charge of laminating and making
media center purchases and the list can go on and on.
The media center is targeted for younger children, so it is full of
low shelves, literacy resources that are targeted for younger students,
and a few computers are available for students/ teachers to use. The
school is also equipped with one computer lab, full of new chrome
books, which Mrs. Donnelly has to monitor and make sure they are in
working order.
Another important part to the media center is the media clerk,
Mrs. White. Mrs. White has a variety of responsibilities in the media
center as well. Mrs. White helps the students and teachers as they are
looking for themes or books, she get the books checked in and out of
the media, and make sure that the books not damaged and are put in
the correct area. Mrs. White has the authorization to help teachers
check out technology resources and make sure that they are working
properly in the classrooms. Mrs. White provides sign up sheets for the
offices that are located in the media center, creates posters for
teachers, and gets laminating done for the teachers. Mrs. Donnelly
and Mrs. White work well together as the perfect team as they are

promoting literacy and technology skills at Port Wentworth Elementary


School.
Goals for the Media Center

Provide literacy resources for the targeted age group.


Provide technologies and resources for the needs of the school.
Promote digital citizenship and ethical use of technology
equipment.

Center Activities:
The media center provides many resources, services, and tools for staf
and student like
Teach students how to find materials in the media center.
Teach students about digital citizenship and how to be digitally ethical.
Provide opportunities to learn how to use new materials/resources.
Provide helpful links, events, and school needs on the school website.
Demonstrate how to use pieces of school software.
Evaluation:
After looking at all of the data, it is evident that the media
center/media specialist is where you would go to find technology or
have questions about technology. The media/technology specialist and
media clerk to a fantastic job to pursue towards the mission and vision
of the district, school, and media center. Mrs. Donnelly and Mrs. White
work well together to make sure that they give the school and students
good experiences with literacy and technology. At Port Wentworth
Elementary, the technology coach does a fantastic job answering
technology questions and providing support for the staf and students.
As I complete my masters this is a job opportunity that I will be
pursing, trying to work on getting more technology in the classroom
and show teachers how to utilize technology materials. One area that
the school could improve on is providing the students with more time

to use technology. There are limited computers in the classroom and


only one lab, so students are able to get on the computer probably
once or twice a week. The students of todays society are raised
around technology, so if we give them the resources to use it more
often, maybe more authentic learning can occur.
