Math Lesson Reflection
‘Something you think went well in your lesson,
All of the activities that I planned for each day went great! I planned them out so that
everyone had exactly what they needed in a lunch baggie. First, I would explain the lesson and
then show the class an example of how to play the game. Then, I would pass out the pieces to the
game with instructions for everyone in case they needed to review. I absolutely loved how
smoothly the games went. I know it went this well because of all the time I put into making
lunch baggies with direetions and game pieces in them.
‘Also, I think the math literature story went very well! I enjoyed reading so much and I
tried to get lost in the characters so that the students would get into the story. I didn’t sec anyone
sleeping so I think that was a good sign, When I asked the students questions they all raised their
hands and interacted with me well.
Something you would do differently and why.
I would change how my lesson on protractors went or I would remove the whole lesson on
protractors all together. ‘The students didn’t have protractors in their classroom and at their grade
level they won't be using them this year, The students had a lot of difficulty with them and they
got really frustrated when I reviewed the measure an angle worksheet and they had gotten a lot
of them wrong, I wasn’t sure if when I was younger my teachers gave me some leeway as long I
was within a couple degrees of the answer or if they marked it wrong when I didn’t measure
exactly correct, IfT had to include the lesson on protractors again I probably would remove the
‘work sheet and teach longer on how to properly measure angles to find the correct degrees.
.Secondly, | would hand out more of a detailed study guide for the students to have before
the test, Although, this was a math unit around the central topic of triangles we did something
different every day. Some students weren't there for certain lessons and it would have been more
helpful if I had of given out a more detailed study guide.
Also, I would have figured out how to use my games as more of an assessment. I walked
around to everyone with a clip board and took notes on the students and observed how they were
completing assignments, but I didn’t have a specifie way to gather data from the games
themselves.
Something you learned about yourself as a teacher.
T learned a lot about myself. I was so intimidated by fifth grade math, but [ learned with a lot of
work I could teach math to fifth graders. I also have learned that I can make math fun for
students as well by incorporating educational games into their lessons.
Something you are certain the students gained from this experience and how you could be
certain of this,
1am certain that the students found out that they can learn and have fun doing it. The students in
this class never get to have fun and most of the time they get in trouble for harmless laughing
and humming during class. When I saw the students laughing and competing while playing the
math games I became happier than I have ever been so far in my collegiate career. This may
seem small or like it’s not a huge “aha” moment or something, but I think that’s what they took
away from this experience. That a teacher cared about them enough to make learning fun,
