16QAM
4G refers to the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards and refers to IMT
Advanced (International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced), as defined by ITU-R.
A 4G cellular system supports target peak data rates of up to approximately 100 Mbit/s
for high mobility such as mobile access and up to approximately 1 Gbit/s for low mobility
such as local wireless access, according to the ITU requirements. Scalable bandwidths up
to a minimum of 40 MHz are supported. A 4G system supports a comprehensive and
secure all-IP based solution where facilities such as IP telephony, ultra-broadband Internet
access, gaming services and HDTV streamed multimedia are provided to users over IPv6.

Terms - A
This section lists the definitions for all LTE Access terms beginning with alphabet A.
Abstract Syntax Notation 1 (ASN.1)
All UEs are randomly allocated to one of ten ACs, the allocated AC being stored in the
SIM or USIM. The AC determines if the UE can attempt to access the network.
Access module
The AP is used by a UE to probe the network before sending an access request. It enables
the UE to determine the correct power level required when accessing the eNodeB. The AP
contains a signature used in the collision avoidance procedure.
Access Security Management Entity (ASME)
The ASME receives the top-level keys in an access network from the HSS. For LTE
RAN, the role of the ASME is assumed by the MME. The MME invokes the
Authentication and Key Agreement (AKA) procedures by requesting authentication
vectors to the Home Environment (HE). The HE sends an authentication response back to
the MME that contains a fresh authentication vector, including a base-key named KASME.
Accumulated Call Meter (ACM)
The accumulated charge for the current call and all preceding calls. This value is
calculated by the Mobile Station (MS) and expressed in home units. The ACM is stored
on the SIM or the USIM.
Active alarm
An alarm that is not cleared, that is, the state of an active alarm is not Cleared. An alarm
is active until the fault that caused the alarm is corrected and a clear alarm is generated.

required to transmit the voice information to be lowered, hence lowering the system
interference produced by a given voice bearer.
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
A procedure and messages in a communication protocol that are used to identify the
physical network address that corresponds to the IP address in the packet.
Administrator Card Set (ACS)
Part of the security world architecture, an Administrator Card Set (ACS) is a set of smart
cards used to control access to security world configuration, as well as recovery and
replacement operations.
Advanced Wireless Services (AWS)
A processor which combines sets of data based on a flexible set of criteria defined by the
user. Aggregation includes grouping and/or combining multiple data records to present a
single record, per measurable event, to the downstream operational system.
AISG protocol
A protocol that supports the integration of antenna line products with remote control and
monitoring capabilities. This protocol also ensures the basic interoperability between the
products and the control infrastructure. This protocol uses a 3-layered model comprising a
physical layer, a data link layer, and an application layer.
It is currently defined for two types of Antenna Line Devices although it can be extended
to other types of devices:

The MIMO technology uses multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver to
improve wireless communication performance. It is one of several forms of smart antenna
technology. The antennas at each end of the communications circuit are combined to
minimize errors and optimize data speed. MIMO with spatial multiplexing helps improve
the data rate.
When an electromagnetic field meets obstructions such as hills, canyons, buildings, and
utility wires, the wavefronts are scattered. The waves take many paths to reach the
destination. The late arrival of scattered portions of the signal causes problems such as
fading, cut-out (cliff effect), and intermittent reception (picket fencing). In digital
communications systems such as wireless Internet, it causes a reduction in data speed and
an increase in the number of errors. The use of two or more antennas, along with the
transmission of multiple signals (one for each antenna) at the source and the destination,
eliminates the trouble caused by multipath wave propagation, and can even take
advantage of this effect.
Multiplexing
A function within a layer, which interleaves the information from multiple connections

Any network object, the parent connectivity of which has not yet been allocated.
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA)
OFDMA permits a more dynamic allocation of resources. OFDMA allows multiple users
to share available bandwidth. The entire available bandwidth of variable size up to a
maximum of 20 MHz in LTE is divided into a number of subcarriers. Each user in the
system is allotted a certain number of subcarriers out of the total number of available
subcarriers. Thus, OFDMA allocates a number of subcarriers for different symbol periods
based upon network conditions and users requirements. As the available bandwidth
increases, available resource blocks increase and hence allowable user data rate increases.
This enables better utilization of the available bandwidth by increasing the number of
users.
The main advantages of OFDMA over TDMA or CDMA are scalability, uplink
orthogonality, and the ability of OFDMA to take advantage of the frequency selectivity of
the channel. Other advantages of OFDMA include its ability to support MIMO and ability
to provide superior QoS.
Orthogonal Variable Spreading Factor (OVSF)
The power level fixed by the network according to the quality target of a communication.
It is used for setting initial uplink and downlink transmission when a UE is accessing the
network.
Output Interface (OI)

downstream billing or operational system.

WPS supports the capture and modification of NE configuration data. The system is used
by the operations team for offline preparation of configuration changes to be applied to
the LTE RAN. The modifications requested at the SAM leads to the generation of an
updated configuration file per affected eNodeB. The updated configuration files are then
activated by sending configuration request to the eNodeBs. When class A parameters are
present, the eNodeBs can undergo a possible reset. WPS supports only the logical data
updated through XML over NETCONF and does not support all configuration
management data.
Workorder
The cmXML file that modifies the state of a current network in an offline mode. Network
configuration modifications are performed on an initial network snapshot, from the WPS
application. A system of checks allows verifying the validity and coherence of the
workorder. After creation in WPS, the workorder has to be activated online from the
SAMapplication for the network configuration modifications to become effective.
Note: This definition is related to the Wireless Provisioning System (WPS)
(p. 1-57) and SAM tools.
A workorder stack containing all the workorders created or imported by the user
within the application is managed by WPS. The workorders inside the stack are
ordered and executed from the first in to the last in workorder.
Workspace
A collection of all the data required for the definition of a planned configuration:
Initial snapshot
Workorder stack
Templates
Datasets
Check sessions
WPS Wizard
A specific WPS configuration window that simplifies the task of provisioning by leading
the user through the steps needed to configure the UTRAN, and provide automatic datafill
where appropriate.

X.7XX
The ITU recommendation for terminals using packet transmission over a PSPDN.
X2 interface
The eNodeBs are interconnected through the X2 interface so that they can initiate and
complete actions such as handovers.
XML
A technology for data representation and transmission used for Internet applications.
XML is a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard targeted at the emerging content
management and business-to-business e-Commerce application market. The standard
supports the creation of custom tags (markup elements) to define data and package it. An
example of using XML would be to describe and deliver data for business-to-business
e-Commerce, such as RFQs/RFPs or order processing.
