Introduction
Use of GIS in Civil Engineering Projects
Some of the Applications of GIS to civil engineering are the following:

Local.
Traffic surve
Seismic hazard

Local municipal operations management

GIS is widely used for operating and managing municipal operations. Municipal operations
involves street sweeping, roadway construction, repair and rehabilitation; snow removal and
storage; chemical and material storage; fleet storage and maintenance; fertilizer, pesticide and
insecticide applications. GIS software can easily help us manage these tasks without any delay.
The use of GIS for the above prescribed uses is evident from western countries. A
comprehensive survey on GIS usage in civil engineering in Great Britain identifies that 80% of
local municipalities have purchased GIS and an additional 18% intend on purchasing. It also
mentions that 83% of public sector consultants (36% of private sector consultants) in the field
have already purchased GIS[1].

Traffic surveillance and management

Human population is increasing day by day and the need for an effective and reliable traffic
system is demanding. With the ever increasing rate of urbanization, traffic increases its side by
side. The utilization of all available routes is of utmost importance. The applications of GIS to
these problems are enormous. GIS plus GPS technologies, combine can help develop an effective
traffic surveillance and management system[2].

Seismic hazard analysis

GIS is used for seismic hazard analysis[3]. A detailed survey is carried out and results are
published in the form of seismic hazard map. This is a very powerful tool; as after an earthquake
hits a region, the local authorities can easily point out areas with severe damage.
