Response of Pechay (Brassica rapa L.

) in Different Soil Textures Treated with Mycorrhiza

By: Violeta A. Vega

Introduction
Different types of soil play on important role to all plants in the world. Soil is one of the factor
affecting growth and yield of crop, tissue nutrients concentrates and crop response. (Vandamme 1978.
Tisdale et. 2003, Menger and Kirby 2001). Soil is also the habitat of many microorganism which help the
crop from its growth and development.
Pechay (Brassica rapa L.) is an erect, biennial herb, cultivated as an annual about 15 30 cm. tall
in negetative stage. It is used mainly for its immature but fully expanded tender leaves. As a fibrous
vegetable, pechay is popular food for those who are figure conscious. People can munch large amounts of
pechay without worrying or calories or carbohydrates. However, the most important health benefits of
pechay are its vitamins and minerals which especially helps in keeping one healthy in terms of attaining
stronger bones and glowing skin. It also gives high profit to the farmer and other investor. Acquiring the
macronutrient from soil will help the plant in its growth and development naturally.
Mycorrhiza fungi are special soil fungus that forms a symbiotic mutualistic relationship with
plant roots that help the crop absorb nutrient from the soil. For that reason, this study attempts to discuss
the response of pechay in different soil textures treated with mycorrhiza.
According to Buan, Ryan Paulo et.al. pechay showed the best growth with 50 percent second
washing hugas bigas wherein Nitrogen and phosphorous was tested.
Objectives
General objective:
This study aimed to evaluate the response of pechay in different soil textures treated with
mycorrhiza.
Specific Objectives:
1. Identify which treatment is suitable for pechay.
2. Evaluate the response of pechay in terms of plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf
are index.
Scope and Limitation
The experimental area will be located at RMTU, Botolan. It will be conducted from November to
December 2016.
Methodology
The study will be conducted for pechay(Brassica Rapal) utilizing four different soil
textures(sandy loam, clay loam soil, loam soil, and sandy soil) in pot experiment. Four different soil
textures will be designate as follows:
T1 Sandy loam soil (control)
T2 Clay loam soil
T3 Loam soil
T4 Sandy soil
