III) Create a BLM License for this installation on the DS-License

Server
A DS-License Server (separate installation) is required, where this BLM Archiver installation will
connect and validate its license (capacity, expiration date, etc.). Refer to the DS-License Server
Manual for instructions.

IV) Install and Configure Database (PostgreSQL) for BLM Archiver

See II) Hardware & Software Minimum Requirements on page 5.
The BLM Archiver can use a database on the local computer, or on a remote computer.
Note:

If you are going to use a remote database, you must install it on a supported operating
system and make sure that the time zone is the same as the one on the BLM Archiver.

IV.1) Obtaining PostgreSQL packages:

1. PostgreSQL comes with Red Hat and Suse. If you need to obtain a PostgreSQL
package (server, client and libraries packages):
a free package can be downloaded from www.postgresql.org or
a list of companies that provide commercial support for PostgreSQL can be
obtained from www.postgresql.org/support/professional_support .
2. You can install PostgreSQL on either:
the BLM computer itself (i.e. locally), or
any computer networked with the BLM (i.e. remote database).
Note: The pg_dump utility must be installed on the BLM computer in order for BLM Archiver to
be able to perform dumps of the blm database. This is included if you install PostgreSQL
locally, but if you install a remote database, you must also install at least this utility on the
BLM computer.
3. Install PostgreSQL, and make sure it is running. PostgreSQL configuration files and
any new databases will typically reside in "/var/lib/pgsql/data" or C:\Program
Files\PostgreSQL\9.0\data (for the free default postgresql installation). If you are
using a commercially supported PostgreSQL, refer to the documentation provided by
your PostgreSQL vendor. This path is referred to as "<pg_data_path>" in this section.

IV.2) Configuring the PostgreSQL Server 9.x (Windows)

Install PostgreSQL on Windows with all the default settings, and make sure PostgreSQL is started.
IV.2.1) Set a password for the database user postgres:
During PostgreSQL installation on Windows, you are given the option of setting the password for
the database user postgres. If you did not set it, or want to change that password:
1. Switch to user postgres. From the command line, type the following:
> psql template1 postgres
> ALTER USER postgres PASSWORD '<enter_password_text_here>' ;
> \q

IV.2.2a) To configure a PostgreSQL installation on the local BLM computer:

1. The default Windows PostgreSQL installation is sufficient for the BLM Archiver
Installation.
2. Proceed to Step IV.2.3) Verify the password for the database user postgres: on
page 6.
IV.2.2b) To configure PostgreSQL on a remote computer (other than the BLM Archiver):
You must configure the PostgreSQL Server to accept connections from the BLM. The following
examples will configure PostgreSQL to accept connections if BLM supplies the credentials of an
authorized user (i.e. user postgres with the password you configure). You may need to adjust
them to your particular network environment.
Note:

Read the instruction comments in the pg_hba.conf file, and refer to the PostgreSQL
Administrator's Guide.

1. Open the file <pg_data_path>\postgresql.conf" and edit the following line:

listen_addresses='*'

Note: Make sure you remove the "#" sign (un-comment the line).
2. In <pg_data_path>/pg_hba.conf, replace all un-commented lines (ones that do not
start with #) with the following lines:
# TYPE

DATABASE

USER

CIDR-ADDRESS

METHOD

local

all

all

host

all

all

127.0.0.1/32

md5

host

all

where:

<ip-address> represents the BLM Archiver computer IP address. Normally, a default

CIDR-mask of 32 will work.
3. Restart the PostgreSQL service from the Start Menu.
IV.2.3) Verify the password for the database user postgres:
1. To verify the password (to test if PostgreSQL accepts a BLM Archiver connection):
If postgres is on the local BLM Archiver computer, at the command prompt
type:
> psql -h localhost template1 postgres

If postgres is remote, you must switch to the BLM Archiver computer and
install the PostgreSQL Utilities, then type:
> psql -h <ip-address_of_postgres_server> -d template1 -U postgres
> \q

Note: Check the Open-Files Limit for the BLM daemon and the Linux kernel
The system administrator should check that the parameters for open file limits match the expected
load on the BLM service. If you find errors in the BLM Event Log like "Too many open files...", you
must increase one or both of these parameters:
1. The local limit that applies to the BLM daemon is found in the following line in the BLM
startup script ("/etc/init.d/blmdaemon"):
ulimit -n NUMBER

2. The parameter for the global maximum number of open files available in the system is
found in the Linux kernel. You should set "fs.file-max" in the "/etc/sysctl.conf" file and
then run "sysctl -p" from a root shell. Consult your Linux kernel documentation for
more information.
