For the desert rose

who blossomed under scorching heat

to fill the dry air with sweet fragrance

Light upon light

A lamp illuminating the night
Sprouting from a niche neither eastern nor western
Igniting the heavens so bright
Lush vegetation growing luxuriantly
Musk perfume flourishing pleasantry
Winter comes
But its leaves don't wither
Its fruits glitter
Tasting sweet, not bitter
Its oil lights up
Its royal branches stretch into the air
But fire does not touch it
Life without it sees no benefit
O Muhammad,
We stretch to fetch the fruit of your twigs
Blessed olives, luscious dates and delicious figs
One Lord dominates the two easts and two wests
Five made guardians vested to guide the rest
The prophets perch nested upon your holy crest
God gives His creatures their needed rest
Recognizing you grants us immortality
Your shade shields us from immorality
Your wisdom precedes all rationality
Your form perfects all materiality
And while the other trees shed
Decay till they're dead
A dozen bouquets emerge and spread
Giving fragrance to the hand that crushes them
Pulled from their stem by the hands of the flagrant
Who have taken their fruit from the wrong tree
But only the produce of one can set us free
Into a Paradise where the rivers flow eternally

Si on me presse, continue-t-il, de dire pourquoi je l'aimais, je sens que

cela ne se peut exprimer qu'en rpondant: parce que c'tait lui; parce
que c'tait moi.

The Messenger of Allah (s) said:
Allah said: Verily, from My believing worshipers are those whose religion cannot service them
unless they are wealthy, comfortable, and physically healthy. So I try them with wealth, comfort,
and physical health so that their religion may service them. And from my believing worshipers
are those whose religion cannot service them unless they are poor, destitute, and physically ill.
So I try them with poverty, destitution, and ailing health so that their religion may service them.
And verily, We know what is better for our believing worshipers in matters of religion. And from
my believing worshipers is he who strives in his worship, so he rises from his sleep, his
relaxation, and his cushion to make tahajjud for Me during the nights and becomes fatigued from
his worship. So I cause him to become sleepy on one or two nights so that I may try him and
observe him. So he sleeps until he wakes, and he rises upset with himself and miserable over it.
If I were to allow him to worship as he wanted, then conceit would have entered him due to it,
and that conceit would lead him to mischief in his deeds. That conceitedness and self-satisfaction
from his worship would bring about his destruction, as he would think that he has excelled above
the worshipers and surpassed the limits of defective worship. Consequently, he would [actually]
be distancing himself from Me whilst thinking that he is getting closer to Me. So, those who
perform good deeds should not [solely] rely on the deeds that they perform for my rewards. For
verily, if they were to strive, tire themselves, and exhaust their years in My worship, they would
[still] fall short in their quest for My marvels and My bounties in My Paradise and the highest
positions near Me. Rather, they must put their trust in My mercy, and they must be happy with
My grace, and they must be hopeful and content with Me. For verily, at that, My mercy will
embrace them. They will attain My satisfaction, and My forgiveness will enshroud them, for
verily, I am Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful, and by that I have been named. (al-Kafi)

The Prophet Muhammad (s) said:

The Prophet David [a] asked Allah, "O Allah, for every king is a treasure, so where is Your
treasure?" So Allah said,
"I possess a treasure that is greater than the Throne,
vaster than the Seat,
sweeter than Paradise,
and more decorated than the Kingdom.
Its land is recognition [of Me],
its sky is faith,
its sun is yearning [for Me],
its moon is love [of Me],
its stars are thoughts [about Me],
its companion is the intellect,
its rain is mercy,
its harvest is obedience [to Me],
and its fruit is wisdom.
It has four doors: knowledge, forbearance, patience, and contentment.
Verily, it is the heart." (`Awali al-La'aali by Ibn Abi Jamhur al-Ahsai)

The Prophet Muhammad said, "I asked my Lord a question that I wish I had not asked Him.
I said, 'O my Lord, there were prophets before me - the winds were made subservient to one

So He said, 'Did I not find you as an orphan and gave you refuge?' (93:6)
I said, 'Of course.'

He said, 'Did I not find you lost and guided you?' (93:7)
I said, 'Of course, yes, my Lord.'
He said, 'Did I not relieve your heart and remove your burden from you?' (94:1-2)

The Prophet Muhammad (s) said,

In every day,

When the Prophet (s) ascended the heavens, he asked, "O Lord, what is the status of the believer
to You?"
Allah said, "O Muhammad, whoever insults any of My friends has declared war against Me. I am
the quickest to help My friends. I have not hesitated in doing good to them like My hesitation to
cause the death of a believer who dislikes death - I dislike to disappoint him.
Of My believing servants, there are those who do not perform well without wealth, and if I
change his condition, he is destroyed. Also among My believing servants are those who do not
perform well unless they are poor, and if I change their condition to something else, they are
destroyed.
For seeking nearness to Me, there is no better means for My servants than to fulfill what I have
made obligatory for them, and that he should seek nearness to Me through performing voluntary
acts of worship so that I may love him. When I will love him, I will be his ears with which he
will hear, his eyes with which he will see, his tongue with which he will speak, and his hands
with which he will perform his actions. Whenever he prays, I will answer him, and whenever he
asks a favour, I will grant it to him. (al-Kafi)

The Prophet (s) asked his companions, "Which handle of the faith is the strongest?"
So they replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." Some of them said "prayer", some of
them said "alms", some of them said "fasting", some of them said "Hajj and pilgrimage", and
some of them said "struggling in the way of Allah".
The Prophet said, "There is virtue in each of what you have mentioned, but that is not it. Rather,
the strongest handle of the faith is love for Allah's sake and hatred for Allah's sake, and loyalty to
the friends of Allah and disassociation from the enemies of Allah." (al-Kafi)

The Prophet (s) said,

"Allah made the delight of my eyes in prayer. He made prayer beloved to me just as He made

never am never satiated (quenched) from prayer." (Mizan al-Hikma)

The Prophet Muhammad (s) said,

"Teach your children three qualities: love of your Prophet; love of his Ahl al-Bayt, and the

`Ali asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is that specifically for me, or for all the people?"
The Prophet replied, "Allah has given that to you and to he who acts in accordance with that."
`Ali asked, "What is that, O Messenger of Allah?"

Asceticism in the world is not abandoning wealth, nor is it the denial of

The Prophet Muhammad [s] said,

Abu Dharr said, "O Messenger of Allah, all of us feel humble before Allah."

The Messenger of Allah had led the morning prayer with the people, and
[thereafter] he looked to a young man in the mosque who was shivering and hanging his head
low. His colour was pale, his body was thin, and his eyes were sunken in his head. So the
Messenger of Allah said to him: How is your morning, O so-and-so? He said: I, O
Messenger of Allah, am confident this morning. So the Messenger of Allah was
surprised at his words, and he said: For every reality there is a certainty, so what reality are you
certain about? So he said: My certainty, O Messenger of Allah, is what makes me grieve, remain
awake at night, and keeps me thirsty during the day. So I abstain myself from the world and that
which is in it until it is as if I can see the throne of my Lord and we are brought forth for
judgment, and the creation is assembled for that and I am among it. And it is as if I can see the
people of Paradise at bliss in Paradise, knowing (yata`arrafoon), and reclining upon couches.
And it is as if I can see the people of the Fire, and they are being punished, and shouting. And
right now it is as if I hear the roaring of the Fire ringing in my ears. So the Messenger of Allah
said to his companions: This is a worshiper whose heart has been illuminated by
Allah with faith. Then he said to him: Stick to what you are upon. So the young man said: Pray
to Allah for me, O Messenger of Allah, that I attain martyrdom with you. So the Messenger of
Allah prayed for him, and not long thereafter, he came out in one of the
expeditions of the Prophet , and he was martyred after nine others, and he was the
tenth. (al-Kafi)

The Prophet Muhammad (s) said:

Once, when Moses [a] was seated, Iblees approached him with a hooded cloak of motley colours.
As he came nearer, he removed the cloak and greeted Moses.
?Moses said, Who are you
He said, I am Iblees.
?Moses said, May Allah not bring your abode closer! Why have you come
He said, I have come to greet you for the status that you have before Allah, the Most High.
?So Moses said: And what about this cloak
He said: With this, I take control of the hearts of the people.
Then Moses asked him, Tell me about the sin which when a person commits it, you overpower
him and get the better of him.

He said, When he becomes conceited, and regards his good deeds as too many; and when his
own sins seem small to him.
Then, Iblees told Moses: I give you three pieces of advice:
(1) O Moses, never be alone with a strange woman, or allow her to be with you in private, for
neither of you meet the other without me being in your company myself, without my colleagues.
(2) And be careful when you make a covenant or pledge to Allah (fulfill it immediately). For
whenever a man pledges a vow or a covenant with Allah, I intervene between him and its
fulfillment myself without my colleagues.
(3) And when you intend giving a charity, give it soon, for when a servant of Allah intends
giving alms, I alone, without my colleagues, sit in between his intention and the charity,
preventing it from taking place.
Then, Iblees turned away, saying: O, what a shame, what a grief! I have taught Moses that
which he will impart to humanity! (Mufeed's Amali)
