What is the relationship between craters, calderas,

vents, and magma?
A vent is an opening in the crust where lava erupts from. A crater is a bowlshaped depression, at the top of volcanoes. Larger depressions are called
calderas. Hot fluid within the earth's crust from which lava flows.

How does a crater lake form? (words and pictures)

They are a result of numerous volcanic eruptions.

What two factors does a volcanos appearance

depend upon?
The type of material that forms the volcano and the type of eruptions that
occur.

What characteristics vary among volcanoes?

Size, shape, and composition.

How do the volcanoes compare in terms of size and

slope?
Shield volcanoes are by far the largest, while cinder-cone volcanoes are the
smallest. Composite volcanoes being in the middle.

What factors cause differences in size and slope?

Different kinds of materials that make up each volcano, the vegetation that
grows on the volcanos slopes, local climate, and eruptive history.

What is tephra?
Rock fragments thrown into the air during a volcanic
eruption.

What is a pyroclastic flow?

Gas, ash, and other tephra flowing down a slope at incredible speeds.

Where are most volcanoes found?

Usually they form at plate boundaries, about 80% are found at convergent
boundaries, 15% are found along divergent boundaries, and only about 5%
are found outside of plate boundaries.

Use the maps provided to show: (1) the Circum Pacific

Belt and the Mediterranean Belt where convergent
volcanism occurs and (2) the Hawaiian Emperor
Volcanic Chain.
How do hotspots form?
Unusually how regions of Earths mantle where high-temperature plumes
of mantle material rise toward the surface.

What do hotspots tell us about tectonic plates?
