Clean water supply is expected to be one of

the 21st centurys most challenging issues, and
Wheatland County area leaders are hoping that efforts in the Wheatland Regional Corporation and
Wheatland Regional Water Pipeline project will
protect and supply their residents present and future water needs.
Representatives from the villages of Hussar,
Rockyford and Standard, Wheatland County representatives and Keith Schenher, grant technologist
for Alberta Transportation, turned sod on a balmy
Nov. 9 in Standard, as a commemorative start to
work on Phase 1 of the project.
It is a good model for other municipalities looking to form partnerships, said Schenher. None of
this moves forward without collaboration.
Our government is proud to support the
Wheatland Regional Water Pipeline, an example
of leaders coming together in the common interest of their communities. Access to clean drinking
water and water-wastewater treatment systems is
essential for all Albertans and their quality of life.
We will remain focused on investing in Albertas
public infrastructure, so that our province continues to serve the needs of Albertans today and for
generations to come, said Brian Mason, Alberta
Transportation Minister and Infrastructure Minister.
Many local dignitaries and citizens came out for
the event.
I am proud to be a part of a project that is
solving a huge problem for many communities
in Wheatland County. Given its legs, I believe the
project will go many miles, said Wheatland County councillor Rex Harwood.
Honourable mention was given Ron Corbiell,
who was instrumental in the early stages of planning, back when the concept was just called the
water project.
Those ideas were a jumping-off point that led to
the continued effort and planning by many people, for a project concept that has taken about a
decade to come to fruition.
The project has several phases: Phase 1 will start
with the development of a raw water reservoir, situated seven kilometres south of Standard. The 25
acres of land holding the reservoir is under a lease
contract with the Western Irrigation District. The
water supplied will be potable and not used for irrigation purposes. Pipes are already on site to run
water to a pump station and then to the Standard
Water Treatment Plant. Upgrades to the Standard
plant will be completed in the first phase, and
Gleichen will be the first village to receive potable
water, when the pipeline is operational.

MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter

Large crowds filled the Strathmore Civic
Centre on the morning of Nov. 11 as people
came to honour, pay tribute to and remember those who sacrificed for our country. As
crowds filled the large room, many others
stood outside to hear and take part in the important ceremony.
Remembrance Day honours the time the
guns fell silent at the end of the First World
War in 1918 during the 11th hour of the 11th
day of the 11th month, and every year Canadian citizens fall silent at this time to remember.
According to Strathmore mayor Michael Ell,
it was an honour to see so many people willing to come forward and remember the military and the sacrifices they have given.
This speaks volumes as to our community, said Ell. We gather as a community to
remember those who gave us the life and the
freedoms we appreciate so much.
Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt
was a guest speaker at the ceremony.
We have fewer veterans with us now, but
more people are coming out to honour them
and that might be because of the wars our
country has had to fight in recent years, he
said.
Fildebrandt, who grew up in military towns,
explained that some of his best friends served
in Afghanistan.
Some of them [were] seriously wounded,
all of them mentally wounded, said Fildebrandt. It changed their lives they were not
the same men when they came back that I
knew when they went.
Fildebrandts great grandfather fought
on the beaches of Normandy in the Second
World War. Fildebrandt said his grandfather
didnt really like to talk about it very much,
but he did want to know that people remembered.
Canadians have served in the armed forces
since 1867. Ell said Canadas peacekeeping
role has enabled it to help others who are not
able to defend themselves.
We look back and we see what they endured and we are humbled by their sacrifices, said Ell.

Perfect Gifts For Everyone

A large crowd came out for the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Strathmore Civic Centre on Nov. 11. The ceremony was hosted by comrade Irene
Knappe who was joined by Reverend Brian Beveridge, Mayor Michael Ell, Martin Shields, Derek Fildebrandt, Comrade David Haines, the Brentwood School
choir, veterans, RCMP and citizens from the area.

Remembering our veterans

Continued from Page 2

He urged the community to honour
those who fought for us by pausing
and remembering their actions, and
to remind ourselves that our freedom
came from the sacrifices of others.
Canadians fought in the Boer War,
the First World War, the Second World
War, Korean War and in Afghanistan.
There was a large break between
the Korean War ending in 1953 and
Afghanistan, and in the decades between, thousands of Canadians served
as peacekeepers overseas in various
operations.
Martin Shields, MP Bow River and a
former school teacher, said Canada has
a long history of participating in those
battlefields that are important.
Its been an honour to travel with
students to Europe to see those cemeteries and to watch the students as
they read the dates of each of those
people who died 17, 18, 19, 20
[years] the tears welled up as they
realized they were the same age as the
[soldiers] were, he said.

Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion

comrade Irene Knappe acted as host
during the ceremony at the Civic Centre. She told of two somewhat happy
stories that happened during the two
awful and miserable world wars, and
she remembered her father, a war veteran who passed away last July.
He only spoke of some of the
fun times, never anything else, said
Knappe.
The Brentwood School senior choir
opened the ceremony with O Canada
and sung In Flanders Fields, One Candle and Amazing Grace, and closed
with God Save the Queen.
During the ceremony, Comrade David Haines, CD, came forward to read
the names of the men of Strathmore
and district who gave their lives in the
First and Second World Wars.
After the ceremony concluded, the
crowd was invited to the field of honour at the Strathmore Cemetery, followed by the Legion to enjoy comradeship, entertainment and the sharing of
some stories some of us cannot forget, said Knappe.

Water work to begin

Continued from Page 1

We definitely have our marching orders, but we are going to make it happen, said Theo Owel, engineer for the
project.
Its an exciting day for us, said
Rockyford Mayor Burke. We have a
great partnership within these municipalities right now, with similar interests.
We want to ensure we have safe and
sustainable water
for our communities and help our
rural neighbours
along that pipeline.

The Gleichen Water Treatment Plant,

which has had many problems over the
years, will be decommissioned when
the new system is online. Rosebud
will also be connected to the pipeline.
Phase 1 will cost $22,390,000 and be
completed by September 2017.
Phase 2, which gained approval in
September, will run water to the Village
of Rockyford and is expected to begin
design and implementation in March of
2018. The second phase is estimated to
cost $18,440,000.
About 90 per cent of funding for the
projects is supported by a federal grant
through the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund and Albertas Water for Life
program. The rest of the financing is
shared through the partnership. The
funding has some
pretty strict deadlines, but project
engineers are confident they can be
met.

During the long Canadian winters with their

It was in 1957 that the first hormonal

name was Enovid and had a whopping 10mg of
estrogen, many times larger than the amounts in
todays birth control pills. At that time it was

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER

Faith is believing in something when
common sense tells you not to. Thats
the theme of Miracle on 34th Street,
which opened Nov. 11 at Rosebud Theatre.
Susan Walker (Kaia Rose Wilson/
Hannah Andersen) is a feisty little girl
whos been raised solely on facts and
tangible realities. Shes never been told
fairy tales and she doesnt know how

to do imaginary play.
Then a young lawyer named Fred
Gailey ( Jordan Cutbill) comes into the
lives of Susie and her mother, followed
by a kind, elderly man named Kris Kringle (Tim Dixon). Fred encourages Susie
to believe in things that cant be seen,
and Kris Kringle teaches her to use her
imagination. But Doris Walker, Susies
mother (Cassia Schramm Schmidt), is
much harder to convince.
All of that is complicated by the issue
of who Kris Kringle truly is. Is that his

Christmas Carol
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Rosebud School of the Arts students
will perform Frank Dickens Christmas
Carol at Rosebuds BMO Studio Stage,
opening Nov. 26.
This version of Charles Dickens classic story was written by Jay Russell,
with music by Marie Russell, and set in
Canadas Yukon during the Gold Rush
years. The Russells envisioned that
Charles Dickens son Frank, who was
a Northwest Mounted Police Officer in
the 1870s and 1880s, witnessed the story and wrote
it in letters to his father.
In this story, Scrooge
runs a trading post in a
settlement in the Alberta
district of the Northwest
Territories, said Matthew
Oliver van Diepen, who
plays Scrooge.
The three ghosts are historical Canadian figures:
Laura Secord, played by Mikayla Whitehouse, is the ghost of Christmas past;
Martha Black, a successful gold panner
and Yukon MP, is the ghost of Christmas present, played by Heidi MacDonald; Prime Minister Sir Wilfred Laurier,
played by Zach Running Coyote, is the
ghost of Christmas yet to come.
A Metis man named Robert Crachette, played by Emily Cambridge, is
Scrooges assistant. Crachettes son Ti
Jean, played by Anna Dalgliesh, ends
the play with the famous line, God
bless us, everyone! Narrator Frank
Dickens is played by Maggie Mackenzie.
Most of the performers are secondyear students, and for them, Frank
Dickens Christmas Carol is their first
full-fledged production at Rosebud
School of the Arts.

Were all having fun and messing

around with this show, which is really
light-hearted, van Diepen said. The
jokes that we pull, and the different
ways we figure out how to make the
scenes come together, and the absurdity of some of the movements that we
do its just a lot of fun.
Finding the subtleties of Scrooges
character is challenging but also enjoyable, he said.
He starts off as this mean grouchy
old fur trader, who thinks hes just the
best businessman and all you need to
do is care about business,
he said. Christmas and joy
and family are just bothersome things that you would
rather do without.
Then throughout the
night, with the three different ghosts showing him different events, and just sort
of reminding him of his humanity and his love, he sort
of reawakens his love for
life and his love for people, added van
Diepen. And its really fun to play with
that and just find his humanity, even
with his grouchy exterior.
Audiences will also enjoy the show,
said van Diepen.
Theyll love the laughter that comes
with it, the story thats behind it, and
the love and grace thats throughout
this show, he said. Its full of quirkiness and uniqueness and all these little
characters popping in and out. Theyll
enjoy the playfulness of it, as well as
the heart behind it. This show is about
family and discovering love during the
holidays.
Frank Dickens Christmas Carol runs
on Rosebuds BMO Studio Stage at 4:30
p.m., Nov. 26 to Dec. 17. Get tickets at
1-800-267-7553 or tickets.rosebudcentreofthearts.com.

real name? Is he mentally sound? Susie

is sure she knows who he is, and even
her mother is almost a believer. But can
he persuade the New York City courts?
Theres more than one miracle happening on 34th Street. The 13-year-old
in our company liked it when bags of
mail arrive at the courthouse, just at the
right time. I like the intangible miracles:
a practical and play-less little girl learns
to be creative, and to hope for the impossible. A woman whose heart was
broken starts to love and trust again.
And a massive, business-driven city discovers that kindness is more powerful
than commerce.
This show has a large cast, and most
actors play multiple roles, so I imagine the task for director Paul F. Muir to
be even more complex than for most
productions. But these actors perform
well, and they clearly distinguish their
characters for us with accents and
wardrobe, and very good acting. They
seem to have fun all the way through
the show, and because they are, we do
too.
Kaia Rose Wilsons performance as
Susan Walker is remarkable, especially
since shes only about seven years old.
Mike Thiessen gives expressive, hilarious performances as Mr. Macy and
other characters. Stephanie Lanting, a
third-year Rosebud School of the Arts
student in her first Opera House role,
is endearing as a young caretaker with
a Brooklyn accent, and as the enthusiastic courtroom stenographer. And
Bethany Wickens, another third-year
student, is hilarious in several roles, especially as the happily-inebriated Mrs.
Shellhammer. The 1940s-era costumes,
designed by Victoria Krawchuk and
created by Amy Castro, also do a lot to
enrich this production.
For our young teenager, Miracle on
34th Street is her favorite of the Rose-

bud Theatre shows shes seen. She was

only one of many children in the audience, and if the audience laughter is an
indication, people of all ages enjoyed
this production of Miracle on 34th
Street.
Afterward, my companion said, thats
a really nice way to start the Christmas
season. I agree.
Miracle on 34th Street plays in Rosebud Theatres Opera House until Dec.
23, but some performances are already
sold out. Get your tickets, which include a buffet meal complete with turkey and the trimmings, at rosebudtheatre.com or 1-800-267-7553.

Rosebud Church pews were full of congregation members and guests
on Nov. 6, for the sixth annual Art Dahlen Memorial Polka Mass, featuring
Christian liturgy and hymns set to polka music. Art Dahlen was a Lutheran
pastor who notated the music from a Polka Mass recording by Fr. Frank

Anger was directed at Wheatland County council last month, when some members of council
took a hard stance on waste water requirements
for new builds in the Lakes of Muirfield area.
The failure of Strathmore to commit to the
wastewater pipeline from Muirfield to Strathmore
led Wheatland County council to set a moratorium on building projects in the area.
If the town is going to allow a pipeline from
Lyalta, it will take a lot longer than a few months
to get approval; in fact it could take years if it is
going to happen at all, said Jim Souza, manager
for Lakes of Muirfield.
Hugh Ham, legal counsel for Lakes of Muirfield residents, said the Town of Strathmore has
delayed in decision making, indicating residents
were against outside use of its facilities and were
concerned it would boost local water rates.
Souza stated that discussions have been picked
up with Wheatland Utility Company, which has
Alberta Environment approval to run a pipeline
to a sewage lagoon near the Cattleland feedlot.
This option is more costly, but fits timelines that
are quickly looming on residential sewage disposal contracts. The agreement, which includes
the Homesteads of Lyalta development, is currently being reviewed by Municipal Government
Board with a hearing scheduled for Dec. 12-14.
We dont have a solution in place and we are
a long way from it. I have had issues with this at
the get-go and I have issues with it today, said
Coun. Ben Armstrong.
The sludge surrounding this issue surfaced
again at the Nov. 8 meeting.
This time, lawyer Hugh Ham directed hard realities to council: two builders and a buyer with
no home in Muirfield voiced their concerns to
council on the servicing requirement in the Land
Use Bylaw and the building moratorium that has
affected their holdings.
If your goal was to avoid liability you have
missed the boat, as you have triggered the liability, said Ham, representing Lakes of Muirfield
builders and residents.

Ham said the current development for the

Homesteads at Lyalta subdivision application has
been in the works for over one and a half years.
He indicated that the municipal government was
not pleased with such delays for developers and
will be changing governance to ensure planners
and councils provide timely service.
He presented the contracts council had entered
into with builders and indicated that the builders had a good case with the land compensation
board, for an award of about $1.5 million, and
their next step would be to sue. The legal costs
and mandated judgments may be more costly
than finding a good solution for the waste disposal.
You are liable this afternoon. This is where the
rubber hits the road and there is really no reason
for it, said Ham. You are the ones who approved
the subdivision. I dont see how you can avoid
liability.
He suggested council reconsider that the current disposal system was working and good until
fall of 2017, and that council work out other avenues, like the Wheatland Water Utility and Cattleland waste water lagoon, or find a more permanent solution.
If you guys get together, you can solve this and
that will be the end of it. There is a clear solution
standing in front of you, said Ham.
It was asked that the development permits be
reconsidered. Council voted, with Coun. Glenn
Koester and Coun. Armstrong against bringing
the builders development permits back for consideration. The two development permit bylaws
were voted on again; this time they passed with
Coun. Koester and Coun. Armstrong against.
Coun. Brenda Knight asked that the 2015-39 direct control bylaws for Muirfield be brought back
to specifically allow single family dwelling permits. Council passed the motion.
I am tired of seeing our ratepayers and developers coming in here and begging us to allow
them to get back to work, said Knight. That is
why I am bringing this back.
Coun. Armstrong followed with a request that
the bylaw brought back at a later date in its entirety for review.

Namaka ASP draft gets approval

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Namaka residents gained a little structure in
their community on Nov. 8, as council passed the
Namaka area structure plan (ASP). The plan will
guide planning for the area over the next 30 years
and be reviewed on a five-year basis.
The vision for the community was constructed
through open houses and meetings with stakeholders in the area.
The Namaka ASP balances the interests of a
variety of stakeholders, and [ensures] the policy
directing development contained in the ASP be
periodically reviewed, said Trina Lamanes, county planner.
The plan characterizes Namaka as a small,
quiet, close-knit community with convenient access to Strathmore amenities. Family activity, appreciation of the Prairie landscape that includes
environmentally significant areas, and room for
growth were all part of the perspective in looking
at the communitys plan.
Once the hamlet fills current lots, room has
been designated for new development. Projection
rates expect a 2.8 per cent growth rate for Namaka, which is part of the expected 25,111 population in Wheatland County as of 2051.
The hamlet planning includes perspectives
for residential variety including single detached,
semi-detached, garden and secondary suites. Subdivision for development greater than two lots
will be conditionally supported through the ASP.
Small home-based or commercial businesses are
anticipated, but industrial development is not
covered under this ASP.
Boundary adjustments were set and voted on
after the acceptance of the ASP, and reflect cur-

rent situations and future development. Agriculture guidelines were also included for areas just
outside the hamlet area.
There are guidelines set out for communitybased facilities, and the development of parks
and recreational paths and improvements. Parks
and play structure guidelines were included.
Mapping updates were done on the hamlet and
include updated environmental and wetland areas. Biological impact studies were included as
there are some environmentally significant areas
in the area. Surface water level requirements were
suggested as part of development permit processes. Old railway lines were also mapped, on request by Alberta Health and Alberta Environment.
The utility and transportation infrastructure
supports a growing community and is acknowledged in the review, with the measures that need
to be improved in the hamlets accompanying
growth. Water and sanitary policies were included, discouraging communal water and sanitary
services.
At the public hearing, Warren Nelson asked
about traffic assessment, whether the recreation
proposals will increase use of the Hwy 243 Namaka road. Council replied that improvements to
the road are on the county road plan and that the
road was thought to be on the paving program.
They directed Nelson to staff for confirmation of
the date improvements were anticipated. Staff
said they didnt expect increased use, as recreation areas were mainly for hamlet resident use.
The full Namaka ASP can be seen on the Wheatland County website.
Council passed second and third reading for
the Namaka ASP.
Namaka boundaries were also passed with second and third reading.

Library Christmas market sees new vendors

MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter
The Strathmore Municipal Library will be hosting
the fourth annual Christmas market on Saturday,
Nov. 19 from 10-4 p.m. in the lobby and meeting
room of the library.
There will be approximately 17 vendors displaying their products; some of the vendors will include Bees on a Quest, Endeavour More Living,
Scentsy, Norwex, Twisted Arts and Wild Whisper
(crafting supplies).
Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services, said the market was developed in a way to
become a partial fundraiser for the library, and also
a cost effective way for vendors to sell their products.
Endeavour More Living, Bees on a Quest and
homemade lollipops will be new this year.
Youll see a great selection of items, said Erison.
Items will include art, books, cards, knitted and
crocheted items, homemade earrings, home-made

lollipops, wood signs and mason jar crafts.

Local author and artist Marjorie Hembroff is going to have her two books available as well.
Theres a great selection of products available
at the market, said Erison. Everything to help you
fill that Christmas wish list.
Were welcoming some new businesses
such as
and
Wild Whisper, a new scrapbooking company thats
opened up in Calgary, she added.
Young Charlie will be in attendance to do face
painting for tips; Erison described her as young
and very enthusiastic.
There will be 12 five-foot tables and five eightfoot tables available, and the cost of the tables will
go towards the library fundraiser. Vendors will be
required to donate one item to the library. There
will also be a silent auction in December and all
proceeds will go directly to the library.
To learn more, people are encouraged to visit the
Library Christmas Market Facebook page which
lists featured vendors and products.

United Church fall supper

June Stewart (l-r), Ellie Taylor and Janet Bolinger
enjoyed the fall harvest dinner at the United
Church on Nov. 4. The church was full as everyone enjoyed a nice, home-cooked meal.

Melissa Strle Photos

During the 1800s, the Flamonds and Sipos, grandparents of

Vi, were coal miners in Hungary. It is known that grandfathers
Flamond and Sipos moved here in the early 1900s and worked
as coal miners in the Drumheller mines.
Hungarian males were known for their exceptional strength
and willingness for hard work, and they were much sought
after. Barbara Flamond stayed behind to care for her very sick
mother, but after mother passed away, she too
moved to Canada.
However, before this, grandfather Frank Sipos had written to the family in Hungary and
requested their eldest son Stephen (age 15)
move here. Stephen sailed from Europe to
North America on his own, not knowing or
speaking any English, and arrived at Ellis Island near New York. For identification, he carried a piece of paper with his name and destination on it. But no one in New York had ever
heard of a place called Drumheller, so they put
him on the first train that came along, and he
ended up at an unknown location. He did eventually arrive in Drumheller, where he joined his
father Frank Sipos working in the coal mines. Stephen was to
become Vis father.
Stephen met Vis mother Mary (Marishka) at a Hungarian
dance in East Coulee. In those days, it was a requirement that
his father solicit Marys parents (the Flamonds) in East Coulee,
to obtain permission for his son to court their daughter. Of
interest, for Stephen to visit Mary, he had to take a bus from
Midland, in the Drumheller Valley, to East Coulee. There was
only one daily bus, each way. Stephen and Mary were married
in November 1938 and lived in Midland, while father and son
(Frank and Stephen) continued to work in the coal mines,

sending parts of their paycheques back to Hungary, where

the remaining family members including five children still
lived. This part of their family had no interest in moving to
Canada!
Viola (Vi) was born on Oct. 6, 1939, the eldest of two children; she has a younger brother. She attended school at Newcastle through Grade 5, then took junior school and high
school in Drumheller. She remembers that in those days, their
house was the only one on the street with cement sidewalks.
So at night, frogs would collect on the warm cement, meaning
anyone coming home in the dark had to be
careful where they placed their feet!
She met her husband Leroy Flamond in
Drumheller after being invited out for supper to a girlfriends, who was looking after
a boarding house. One of the boarders was
Leroy, and they were married in 1962. They
had a son Fraser, and a daughter Sandra,
who sadly passed away in 2013.
In 1974, Leroy came home from work one
day, and told Vi they were moving to Strathmore two days later, as he had purchased a
motel! Hence, Leroys Motel came into being.
As my readers know, Leroys Motel is still
in business in Strathmore, catering mainly to workers in the
oil patch. Sadly, Leroy passed away June 5, 2007 but the
motel is still operating under the ownership of Vi and her son,
Fraser.
When Vi and Leroy moved to Strathmore in 1974, the population was 1,200. Now, it is 10 times that amount. Changes in
the area include the construction of the paved and divided
TransCanada Highway, the building of the hospital, and all the
new schools and box stores, etc.
Life has been good since we moved here. Thank you,
Strathmore, said Vi.

Book folding workshop

raises funds
MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Municipal
Library held its first book
folding fundraiser on Nov. 9.
Book folding is a unique,
artistic way to turn books into
a work of art.
Alexis McKenzie, acting director of library services said
the fundraiser was
a great way to upcycle books that perhaps you were never
going to read, or are
in not good enough
condition to enjoy as
they are.
The workshop featured a book that
had its pages adapted to create a heart
picture resembling 3D art.
All you need is a book and
a spoon and the spoon helps
you with the folding, said
McKenzie. You fold the pages in such a way that creates
a picture.
McKenzie said she hadnt
heard of this art form before
she started working at the
Strathmore Library.
It was kind of new to me,
but weve had some examples
in our library for a while, she
said.
Marlene Risdon, fundraising chair for the library, organized the event and had a lady
come from Calgary to teach at
the fundraiser. Approximately
17 people attended the two
different sessions on Nov. 9.
McKenzie said events such
as this one bring people
from the community together, where they are provided
with a forum to get creative
and artistic.
Its always nice to have
something to do locally, said

McKenzie. It kind of follows

on the footsteps of the paint
nights that weve been doing. I think its so important
to have these kinds of outings
locally.
McKenzie said that the
night saw a really good turnout.
The registrations were
slow but steady, and people
were really wonderful about spreading
the word and inviting their friends so
Id say it was very
successful,
she
said.
Carmen
Erison,
assistant director of
library services, also
agreed with the success of the evening.
It was actually a very successful night, she said. A lot
of people were really excited
and excited to see what were
going to do next.
Erison said she would love
to hold the event again in the
spring.
We are kind of seeing
some very unique opportunities for fundraising right now
with paint nights and creative
type of events, she said.
Erison added that a lady
came into the library this
week to ask about providing
a parchment craft session.
So whats really kind of
fantastic is that people are really drawing on this and getting excited and thats great,
so were going to keep on going, she said.
Erisons goal is to have at
least one fundraiser a month.
I know were working on
possible wreath-making sessions for December, but will
have to confirm with Marlene
(Risdon), she said.

Need for Christmas food hampers

expected to increase
MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter

The Strathmore and Wheatland
County Christmas Hamper Society is
gearing up for an increase in requests
for food hampers this season.
The society officially kicked off this
years campaign on Nov. 12 and the
campaign will run through to Dec. 20
to gather food and gifts for families in
need.
This year, the society anticipates the
need to fill approximately 300 Christmas hampers; however, this number
may increase due to unforeseen demand.
What I see, of course, is the economy of Alberta, the amount of people
who are out of work, the amount of
people who may be requiring them,
said Craig Stone, chairman of the
Strathmore and Wheatland County
Christmas Hamper Society.
Theres definitely going to be an increase this year. Its been happening
more consistently, especially over the
last five years.
Last year, the society estimated a
need for 210 hampers but the eventual
number required was 247, which the
society was able to accommodate.
Stone said the number absolutely
could go over 300 this year.
If it goes 30 over like last year, to
330, its going to be really difficult, said
Stone. Were quite concerned. Therere
a lot of hungry people out there.
Stone said the society needs to come
up with new concepts and ideas to be
able to generate enough food and toys
to make this years goals.
We do have a plan in place to try
and accommodate, Stone said. We just
have to play it out as the year goes.
One new concept the society is trying out this year is the stuff the truck
idea brought forward by Lisa and John
Koffner. The event will help collect
needed food, gifts and cash at four
loca-tions including Sobeys, Walmart,
Co-op and No Frills. Stuff the truck
takes place on Nov. 19.
The societys goal is to provide families with a plentiful meal and toys for
those 18 years and younger on Christmas day. The society also aims to supplement the food budget for that family for the month of January.
The hampers include dry goods,
canned goods, fresh produce, meat,
pantry staples and toys. Other items
may include mittens, toques and
books, and donated cash is used to fill
in items that are short.
Volunteers have placed donation
boxes around town and will be busy
for the season. There are also 25 stores
collecting for the society.

all the tables and racks for the incoming food at one of our locations, said
Stone, who adds the society runs as
a very well-oiled machine, and that
most volunteers are experienced in
what they have to do.
Everybodys in place and is chomping at the bit to get going on this years
campaign, he said.
The hampers are filled according to
family sizes: one to three family members, four to seven family members,
seven to nine family members. For
example, families with one to three
mem-bers may receive 12 cans of soup,
while a larger family may receive 18.
The intention is to give them enough
food to last approximately a month,
said Stone.
The volunteer base is growing and
is at about 100. Organized groups are
welcome to pitch in, too.
Thats such a great feeling to have
the fact that weve got groups wanting
to come and helps us, said Stone.
However, the society is always looking for volunteers and also for new
ideas.
The Strathmore and Wheatland County Christmas Hamper Society is a registered society of Alberta and adheres
to the provincial and federal charitable
guidelines. It provides receipts where
applicable and is accountable to a full
board of directors.
It is supported by the town and the
local county councils, as well as all
service clubs, schools, churches, businesses and individuals from the community.
Food hampers will be distributed on
Dec. 19 and 20.

Did You Know?

The North American holiday season (generally the Christmas shopping season in the U.S.)

this tradition has held forth since at least the 1930s.

MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter

Jennifer Heaton of Strathmore was
shocked when her 14-year-old stepson
Ryker discovered his Halloween candy
had been tampered with after going
trick-or-treating in Strathmore on Oct.
31.
The duo couldnt believe their eyes
when they discovered a finishing nail
had been inserted into a tiny Aero
chocolate bar, through a small hole in
the package.
We found a tiny, tiny hole at the end
of where it said Aero (by the O) and
thats where they pushed it in, Heaton
said. He (Ryker) opened it up, broke it
in half, ate the one half and then when
he went to go eat the other half, he
noticed something shiny on the inside,
and thats when he started looking at
it and then he pulled it (the nail) out.
The Aero package was completely
sealed and the family didnt notice the
tiny hole in the package until after the
police came to look at it.
Heaton said the police officer was
looking at it really, really closely.
She said the nail was quite sharp
and it looked like a nail of some sort
without a head on it.
I think its horrible, said Heaton.
I didnt realize that our small town
would have someone doing that kind
of scary stuff, she said.
Heaton moved to Strathmore when
she was 10 years old, and has lived in
the town for over 25 years.
Its not that small of a town any-

more, but Ive had kids trick or treating

for 18 years and Ive never come across
anything like that before, Heaton said.
Other Halloween tampering incidents occurred across the country this
year, including in Morley, Alta. where a
12-year-old child returned from trickor-treating to find two sewing needles
concealed in two large chocolate bars.
Fortunately, the needles were spotted before anyone was hurt.
In Halifax, police investigated after
a 12-year-old boy cut his thumb on a
razor blade that was stuck in a chocolate bar.
Police recommend that parents inspect their childrens Halloween candy.
Heaton said she has always checked
her kids Halloween candy.
Ive never experienced this before
so thats why I was blown away, she
said.
Heaton does not think her kids will
go trick-or-treating anymore.
My youngest one just turned 13, so I
think that will be their last year.
She said if her children had been
younger, she would not be interested
in letting them go door-to-door anymore for trick-or-treating, and instead
would take them to community parties
and other Halloween events.
Ultimately, Heaton would like to
make people aware of the incident
since she does not personally know
anyone else who has experienced this
before.
I just dont understand where somebody would get off trying to do something like that to children, said Heaton. It just doesnt make any sense at
all its disgusting actually.

Raising funds for new church

The Sacred Heart Parish hosted their annual dinner and auction on Nov. 5 at the Strathmore Civic
Centre. The parish is using the funds to create a
new church at the old IGA location in downtown
Strathmore.
Mario Prusina Photo

Father Wojciech Jarzecki blessed the building that

will become the new Sacred Heart Roman Catholic
Church on Nov. 6. Members of Sacred Heart Parish accompanied Father Wojciech to the former IGA
Garden Market and Home Improvement Warehouse
building in downtown Strathmore. The Parish received possession earlier this month of the 16,000
square foot building, and will begin the planning for
renovation in stages to house the parish worship
space, and eventually offices and meeting spaces,
and possibly a hall with kitchen facilities.

No first-game jitters for Tarvyd

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
CFR Chemicals Bisons goaltender
Hunter Young was sidelined a week
and a half ago after taking a slapshot
in the mask, resulting in a concussion.
The injury opened the door for hometown kid Ty Tarvyd.
I didnt think much of it. I just treated it like any other hockey game, said
Tarvyd.
His first start was a successful one as
the Bisons brushed back the Lloydminster Bandit Energy Bobcats 6-3 Nov. 12
at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The Bisons (12-0-2) called up Tarvyd
last weekend for the Alberta Midget
Hockey League (AMHL) showcase in
Sherwood Park.
We were going to try and fit him
in last weekend, but the opportunity
wasnt there, said Bisons assistant
coach Mike Langen. Ty has been out
to practice a few times and we had full
confidence in him tonight.
Tarvyd is currently the top goaltender in the South Central Alberta Hockey League. Playing for the Wheatland
Athletic Association Chiefs, Tarvyd has
posted a George Hainsworth-ian 0.87
goals against average, 0.96 save percentage and a 6-0-1 record.
He was able to get his first few saves
early on shots from the perimeter.

His first test came in the first period when winger Zach Huber was sent
away for slashing.
I wasnt intimidated, it was just like
any other penalty kill, except these
guys were a little bit bigger, said
Tarvyd.
Following a scoreless second, Bobcats forward Easton Haygarth was
chopped at on a breakaway and was
rewarded with a penalty shot.
Ive had plenty of penalty shots
before. Im not the biggest guy in the
world, so I just try to be as aggressive
as I can and cut down the angles, said
Tarvyd. The key is to be patient and
let them make the first move.
Tarvyd challenged, coming out more
than 10 feet in front of his crease. Haygarth tried a handful of moves and lost
control of the puck.
However, Haygarth would get his
revenge the next shift. Blake Fletcher
teed one up from the point and the
rebound kicked right out to Haygarth
at the side, who had a gaping net to
shoot at, tying it at two.
That was also the second goal that
the Bisons top line of Payton Krebs,
Jackson Salt and Huber were on the
ice for.
We just stayed calm, stuck to our
game and knew things were going to
go our way eventually, said Salt, who
netted the third goal on a rebound op-

portunity from Krebs and Huber. It

was the second goal of the night for
the first line; Huber popped on in at
the end of the first period.
For Salt, these games carry a little
more weight than others. The Bobcats
shut out the Bisons, sweeping them in
three games during in the AMHL final
last season.
The six guys in that locker room
who were there last year and the way it
finished, these wins mean a little extra
for sure, said Langen.
Its all about the logo. Every time I
see it, I just want to pound the crap out
of them, said Salt, who is tied for 10th
in league scoring with five goals and
14 points.
Boaz Bassen, Tyson Scott, Blake Wells
and Brandon Machado each found the
back of the net. It was Machados first
game back since missing some time
with the flu.
Tarvyds teammate on the Chiefs,
Kelton Travis, was also called up to
fill in for Cayde Augustine, who was
out with a hand injury after blocking
a shot the night earlier, as the Bobcats
slip to 3-10-1.
The Bisons laid out the Grand Prairie
Ernies Sports Strom 5-1 Nov. 11 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
Ben Laidlaw started between the
pipes and picked up his league-tying
seventh win, recording 19 saves. He

Bassen opened the scoring and finished with a strong weekend with his
new line mates Wells and Krahenbil. It
shouldnt be a shock that the Peoria,
Ill. native has started rolling; he just
witnessed his Chicago Cubs win their
first World Series in 108 years.
Other goals came from Brett Trentham, Wells, Scott and Salt, with assists
to Wells, Krahenbil, Salt, Landon Melzer and Tarun Fizer.
The Storm slide to 5-7-2 in fourth
place in the Dodge division.
For the Bisons, its a rematch with
the Ernies Sports Strom Nov. 19 at the
Grande Peace Athletic Club, followed
by another road game Nov. 20 against

show off. I made a few little mistakes

and you cant do that at this level, said
Schiffner.
The 36-year-old still got the better
of a pair of bulls. He registered an 86,
good enough for second place during
the Nov. 12 matinee ride, and a 79.50
on Nov. 10, good enough for eighth.
Jordan Hansen of Calgary was
crowned the Canadian champion and
the CFR Aggregate Winner.
I know Jordan pretty good and Im
happy for him. He worked hard all year
and came off an injury, so it was nice to
see him succeed, You know, we are all
friends and competitors. It might be an
individual sport, but we have all leaned
on each other at one point in time,
said Schiffner, who walked away with
$9,164.35 in prize money from the CFR.
Going forward, Schiffner will head
to Regina for a small rodeo next week,
and then he plans to take some muchneeded time off to rest up for next year.

Cobras sting Spartans in provincial

quarters
Wegner and one of his favourite targets Isaiah Simwamu, defensive tackle
Garrett Gatto, linebacker Misi Varga will
be moving on.
Isaac had a remarkable season. He
came in with no QB experience and
had an MVP campaign for us. Isaiah
didnt have a lot of confidence last year
but turned into a scoring threat this
year, said Gorski. This was my first full
group of graduating players that started
the same year I got here. There were so
many spots of growth from when they
were in Grade 10 until now. They have
turned into some fine young men.
Rounding out the graduating class are
Austin Wasut, Kashtin Winnipeg and
Chevy Winnipeg.
The Cobras now take on the Cardston
Cougars in the semifinal and will play
the winner of the Holy Rosary Raiders
and St. Albert Skyhawks in the provincial final.

The Strathmore High School Spartans
were in tough as they drew the number
one ranked Cochrane High School Cobras for their Tier III football provincial
quarterfinal matchup.
Tied 7-7 after the first quarter, the
Cobras dominated down the stretch,
downing the Spartans 71-14.
Still tied in the second, the Spartans were marching when quarterback
Isaac Wegner was drilled and forced to
leave the game with an upper body injury. With Wegner on the bench for the
second quarter, the Cobras struck with
a pair of touchdowns, seizing control.
They are a really good team. We
were hanging in with them for a bit,
but then they flexed their muscles and
took over, said Spartans head coach
Travis Gorksi.
Wegner dove in for a quarterback
sneak from the one-yard line and Kevin
Agboro ran one in from five yards out
for the Spartans two touchdowns.
This marked the end of a very successful season for the Spartans and the
best in Gorskis three seasons with the
school.
The boys laid the groundwork for
a tradition of excellence. They set the
expectations high for this program. It
was nice to see them get rewarded for
all their hard work they put in this season. Im really proud of these guys,
said Gorski.
The Spartans should be able to run it
back with 27 of their 36 players eligible to return. However, the graduating
players will be missed.

One of Canadas greatest bull riders
returned from the Canadian Finals Rodeo feeling a little disappointed and
empty-handed.
This is the greatest place to be for
any cowboy, said Schiffner. But, truthfully, it was a little disappointing this
time. Everyone wants to go up (there)
with the thoughts of becoming a Canadian champion and it didnt work out.
For Schiffner, it was his recordsmashing 16th trip to the CFR, as he
was searching for an elusive third national title.
Schiffner was bucked off his rides
during the Nov. 9, Nov. 11 and Nov. 12
evening shows. He thought he racked
up a solid ride Nov. 13, but was disqualified for a slap violation.
The bulls are athletes too. They
know whats coming and they want to

Keenan Ogle came a knob-save away from tying the game with 5.3 seconds remaining in the
third.
Unfortunately, Jordan McCallums knob deflected the puck out of play, preserving the Stettler
Lightnings 3-2 lead over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings during Heritage Junior Hockey League
action Nov. 12 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Matt (Thomson) was working hard in the corner and made a tough pass to me, said Ogle.
The puck skipped a little bit and it just went off
his knob. It would have been real nice, but thats
the way she goes sometimes.
The Kings (5-9-3) best effort came in desperation time in the third. Just prior to Ogles glorious
opportunity, McCallum robbed Kristian Ayoungman on the doorstep on a sweet feed from Brooker Pretty Youngman with 1:35 remaining and the
net pulled.
But the Kings were more concerned with how
they started as opposed to how they finished.
I dont think we came out with our best effort. Yeah, their goalie made a bunch of saves, but
we have to bear down and come ready to play if
we want to capitalize on our chances, said Kings
head coach Shadoe Stoodley.
The Lightning (7-7-1) entered five points out of
the final playoff spot in the north division. They
also clipped the Kings 7-6 back on Sept. 30 in
Stettler.
It doesnt matter to me or the team who we
play, said Ayoungman. We need to come out
ready to play and start picking up these points.
The turning point came during a three-minute
stretch from the end of the first overlapped with
the start of the second period.
With 3.1 ticks on the clock, Lightning rookie
defenseman Bryce Cornelissen piped home his
third goal on a blast from the point.
The ice was still damp from the intermission
when the Kings hottest sniper took over.
Ayoungman calmly walked into the slot and
rifled the puck top shelf. After a slow start to the
season, Ayoungman now has points in eight of
11 games.
Hes starting to fly around out there, said
Stoodley. He has lots of skill, lots of speed, he

works hard and now the bounces are starting to

go his way. Thats important; we are going to need
a go-to guy to get points for us.
Twenty-nine seconds later, Kings forward Jake
Faris took an elbowing penalty. The Lightning
capitalized, when Dylan Houston buried his 10th
from Logan Davidson and Cornelissen.
That power play goal was pretty big for us,
said Lightning head coach Gavin Brandl. You
could see our bench got a little deflated once they
tied it early in the second. That was a big swing in
the momentum for us.
Faris got one back for the Kings at the 12:18
mark when Thomson came streaking down the
left wing, shook Lightning defender Tyler Wagner
and set up Faris for a wide open one-timer.
The Kings have been outshot in 14 of their 18
games, and once again leaned on Brady Hoover to
keep them afloat.
Hoover was outstanding in his 32-save performance, which is his average workload through 14
starts. Hoover is second in the league for shots
faced with 503. The Three Hills product carries
a 4.07 goals against average and a 0.891 save
percentage in his fifth season (second with the
Kings).
Matt Sylvester snuck one past the Kings masked
man when he pulled a Brett Hull, launching a
one-timer on the power play from one knee with
just over two minutes remaining in the second.
The Kings narrowly missed their opportunity
for their first weekend sweep, after they shelved
the Three Hills Thrashers 3-1 Nov. 11 at Three
Hills Centennial Arena.
Defenseman Andrew Sample returned to the
lineup from a shoulder injury and found the back
of the net. Zachary Meadows added a goal and
an assist and Pretty Youngman supplied the winner at the 9:02 mark in the second from Hayden
Vanderploeg.
Up next for the Kings are two games against
the top teams from the northern division. First, a
road game at the Didsbury Recreation Complex
against the Mountain View Colts (12-2-2). The
Colts trimmed the Kings 5-2 Oct. 1 in Strathmore.
Their next home game goes Nov. 20 against the
Airdrie Techmation Thunder (13-3-2). The matinee
is set for 2 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The Thunder iced the Kings 7-6 in overtime
back on Oct. 14 at Ron Ebbesen Arena.

Tuesday, November 22: Falls Prevention & Philips Lifeline
November is falls prevention month across Canada.
Are seniors falls that serious?
According to the Injury Prevention Centre...
Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults in Alberta.
1 in 3 seniors living independently will experience a fall each year, while up to 50% of those in institutions will fall.
Falls among senior Albertans result in over 10,000 hospital admissions and over 29,000 emergency department visits every year.

Chiefs erupt offensively

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Twitter account for the Wheatland Chiefs
flooded timelines with updates during their 22goal performance over the weekend in South Central Alberta Hockey League action.
The local double-A midget team destroyed the
winless Cranbrook Dynamiters 15-2 Nov. 11 at
Hussar Arena, as 13 different players etched their
way onto the score sheet.
Isaac Benoit led the charge, as he finished with
five goals and a pair of assists. He now leads the
Chiefs with 13 goals and 23 points in 12 games.
Chayse Hnatowich pulled the hat trick and Wacy
Sandum piled up two goals and one assist.
Lucas Muenchrath netted the winner in the first
and added an assist. Other scoring came from
captain Ryan Bell (1G, 1A), Riley Romashenko
(1G, 1A), Scott Desserre (2A), Zachary Suntjens
(2A), Kelton Travis (2A), Robert Butterwick (2A),
Kale Clouston (1G) and Ryan McHarg (1A).
With Ty Tarvyd getting the call to play with the
CFR Chemical Bisons, Riley Stovka started in net
and only needed to make a pedestrian 12 saves
for his fourth win.
The Chiefs rode a pair of short-handed goals to
rout the Red Deer Elks 6-2 on Nov. 13 at the Kinsmen Twin Arenas.
Trailing 1-0 after the first, Hnatowich scored his
first of two on the night on a lovely tic-tac-toe play
from Romashenko and Butterwick.
Sandum deflected a point shot from Tyler Skehar on a five-on-three powerplay. Travis picked
up a second assist on the play. Sandum added the
winner at the end of the second from Bell and
Suntjens.
Romashenko supplied a goal and two assists
and Benoit netted one goal in the third.
Tarvyd returned and played 52 minutes, making 24 saves on 26 shots, running his record to
6-0-1. Stovka chipped in with seven minutes in
the crease and recorded three saves, while Tarvyd
dealt with an equipment issue.
Following the weekends slate, the Chiefs carry
the top offence by a mile with 77 goals for. The
next closest are the Medicine Hat Hounds with 50.
Only one game this weekend for the Chiefs as
they host the Foothills Bisons on Nov. 20 (7 p.m.)
at the Strathmore Family Centre.

BRAVES LOSE A TOUGH ONE

The Red Deer Parkland Transmission avenged
the Elks loss with a 6-2 victory over the Wheatland Braves Nov. 12 at the Kinsmen Twin Arenas.
The local double-A peewee team trailed 4-0 in
the second when Tyler Fairbairn found the back
of the net on the power play from Josh Alberda.
Fairbairn leads the Braves with 11 goals and 17
points. Alberda sits third with five goals and eight
points.
Phillip Raycroft chipped in a short-handed tally
at the 8:02 mark of the third period. Rhett Harten
stopped 27 shots in his seventh appearance of the
season.
The Braves picked up their second win of the
season as they shaded the Central Alberta Selects
5-3 Nov. 13 at the Can Pak Arena 2. Cole Whelans
third goal of the year ended up being the winner
with 9:13 remaining in the second from Tate Yule.
Alberda chipped in with a goal and an assist,
with other scoring coming from Ryan Grabmuller
(1G), Carter Gosling (1G), Cyle Clayton (1A), Fairbairn (1A), Ryder Many Grey Horses (1A), Cole
Tweit (1A) and Raycroft (1A).
Matthew Dovichak blocked 22 shots for his first
win on the year.
The Braves travel to Lethbridge to tangle with
the Lethbridge Hurricanes White Nov. 18 at the
Henderson Ice Centre.
They return home Nov. 20 to host the Red Deer
Motors at the Strathmore Family Centre. Puck
drop is set for 4:15 p.m.
WARRIORS DROP TWO
The Wheatland Warriors stretch of well-played
hockey came to an end over the weekend as they
allowed 89 shots, dropping a pair of games.
First, the Cranbrook CPC Hornets stung the local bantam team 5-1 on Nov. 12 at Hussar Arena.
Trey Gillis sniped his seventh from Kobe Gosling at 8:48 of the second period.
Logan Grant was peppered in net, allowing five
goals on 45 shots.
On Nov. 13, the West Central Trilliant Real Estate
Group Tigers overwhelmed the Warriors 7-1 at the
Rocky Arena Complex.
Nolan Bailey pulled an unassisted marker on
the power play three and a half minutes into the
third. He leads the Chiefs with nine goals and 15
points.

Winning gold!
The Strathmore Storm Atom
B team won Gold at the Annual Strathmore Storm Atom
Tournament from Nov. 1113. The team went 2-1 in the
round robin, and defeated
the Springbank Rockies 5-3
in the gold medal game. The
regular season will begin on
Saturday, Nov. 19, as the
Storm travel to Beiseker for a
road game then return home
the next day to host Okotoks.

Hawks first season in the books

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks inaugural
football season came to a close Nov. 12 in Cold
Lake.
The Hawks took on another brand new program, the Assumption School Crusaders and were
cranked 92-20 in the B side Alberta 6 Man Football League semifinals.
They beat us pretty bad, said head coach Michael Annicchiarico.
Missing a few starters, the Hawks tried their
best, but went up against a well-prepared Crusader team.
They scouted us pretty well and took away
our strength which was the running game. They

would send five guys up to the line and dared us

to throw the ball, something we werent as confident doing, said Annicchiarico, who plans to return next season as head coach along with Josh
Jalbert.
Annicchiarico also noted his team was a little
under-sized and a little younger than the Crusaders.
This was a building season for us, he said. We
didnt have any Grade 12s on our team so hopefully they all come back a little bit bigger and a
little bit stronger and improve from there.
The Hawks went 3-5 this season and earned
their way into the B-side playoffs by clinching the
sixth seed from the south division.
The Crusaders will take on the Caroline Cougars
in the B final Nov. 19.

Corey Ross made his seventh start and allowed seven

goals on 44 shots.
The Warriors wont suit up for another regular season
game until Dec. 3, when they travel to the Taber Community
Centre to take on the Taber Golden Suns.
They will return to the Strathmore Family Centre Dec. 4
(4:15 p.m.), when the Central Alberta Selects come to town.
The Warriors travel down to Medicine Hat for a tournament that kicks off Nov. 24.

DONT BE A
BACKSEAT DRIVER!
As with many of us, I spend a
lot of time in my car. Im always
driving here and there and
going through rush hour and
traffic and construction and
detours. Everyone is so busy
trying to get to where they are
going that they seldom enjoy
the ride.
In a world where things always
seem so busy and stressful, we
forget how pleasant it would be
to be a passenger. I think that
our journey in life with God is
often that way. He would like
us to get in the back seat and
enjoy the ride while He handles
the detours and road blocks
and traffic and stresses. He
wants us to trust Him and sit
back and relax.
Sometimes I become a back
seat driver when God is at the
wheel. I find myself wanting
to grab that wheel and take
control as it may not always be
the way I wanted to go. But Ive
discovered that when Im in
control, it gets more stressful.
Our journey in life is very much

like that highway. There are

detours, bumps, dead ends,
and lots of construction.
There are up hills and down
hills, disappointments and
celebrations. Things dont
always go the way we planned
or expected.
I do know that when I let God
take charge, there is far less
anxiety and I notice things I
never would, if I have to focus
on only the road. From the back
seat, I see a whole different
picture. I can linger longer on a
beautiful waterfall, someones
lovely garden, a hot rod car
passing by, or just have a nap
in the sunshine.
Its nice to know that I dont
have to carry everything by
myself on this journey. God is
a good driver and an excellent
navigator. I dont always have
to know every detail of where
Im headed, but its nice to
know Im safe along the way.
Maybe you should try letting
Him drive too? You never know,
you might enjoy the ride more.

Renegades run rampant over Badgers

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Community Football
Association Badgers ran into a buzz
saw named Duncan Critch during the
Tier III Central Peewee Football League
provincial championship.
They had one guy who was their
entire team, said Badgers head coach
Doug Thiessen. Hes a powerful, big
kid and we couldnt stop him.
Critch and the Bonnyville Renegades
smoked the Badgers 72-8 in front of a
boisterous crowd Nov. 12 at Crowther
Memorial Junior High School field.

He is a phenom; a prodigy, boasted

Renegades head coach Kevin Sartain.
Everyone up in Bonnyville knows it
and we are waiting to see how far he
goes.
Critch was a runaway freight train.
His combination of size, speed and
strength made him nearly unstoppable.
I couldnt have done any of this
today without my teammates, said
Critch, who was responsible for seven
touchdowns. I couldnt run if I didnt
get any blocks and I couldnt get any
passing yards if my receivers didnt get
open and make plays.
Whenever he wasnt running over a

Badgers defence that only yielded four

defensive touchdowns in seven games,
he was bombing them in the air with a
passing game unlike any the Badgers
faced this season.
Critch had a bevy of receivers to
choose from; everyone was getting
open.
His biggest passing play came on a
flea-flicker, when he connected with
Izahia Sartain on a 47-yard touchdown
pass.
I gotta give Strathmore credit. They
played hard and they played to the end.
They are not an easy team to play,
said Kevin Sartain. The score probably

doesnt reflect it, but they should be

proud of the way they played today.
Vadin VanDenBossche took the
opening kickoff untouched down the
left sideline to the house. From there,
the Renegades led 35-0 after the first
quarter and 60-0 at half.
Midway through the second quarter,
Ryan Brundige was in kickoff coverage
for the Renegades when he was sent to
the ground and didnt get up.
Someone on the Badgers Kick return
team picked up Brundige on a block
and put him to the ground. The ambulance was called to the field.
It was a clean hit, I didnt see anything wrong with it. Apparently it was
just like a muscle spasm in his back.
The docs gave him some pills and he
even came back to the field and helped
us celebrate, said Sartain, who started
the peewee program four years ago.
The Badgers have been a second-half
team this postseason. They have come
out flat in the beginning, but regrouped
to pour it on in the second half.
The Badgers opened the second half
with a few inspiring runs from Austin
McInnis and Jordan Stewart.
McInnis was cutting on a dime and
giving nine cents change while Stewart was rumbling and tumbling towards
first downs, breathing life into the Badgers bench and crowd.
Stewart ripped off a 29-yard touchdown scramble with 5:53 remaining in
the fourth for the Badgers lone score.
These kids played their heart out today. What more can I ask from them? It
was an honour coaching them all year,
said Thiessen. We played with class
and it was an awesome season.
The Renegades were simply on a different level than the Badgers. The Renegades defended their provincial title
and extended their undefeated streak
to 17 games. The Renegades also appeared in the Tier III Final in 2014,
when they were shut out by the Sylvan
Lake Bears 64-0.
For the Badgers, it was their first trip
to a provincial final since they lost 50-0
to the Spruce Grove Cougars during the
Tier IV final in 2010.
The SCFA hold their end-of-season
organization awards tonight, Nov. 18,
when they will recognize and hand out
awards for individuals, teams and allstar team nominations.

Hendricks scores dominant season for Hawks

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks
reached the B-side playoffs in their inaugural season of Alberta 6 Man Football League play, thanks in part to their
bankable running back.
Grade 11 student Jayden Hendricks
grew up watching football on Sundays
with his family, cheering on the New
England Patriots to Super Bowls and
idolizing players with the Minnesota
Vikings. Little did he know he would
transform into the Hawks version of
Tom Brady or Adrian Peterson.
I always wanted to play. I was very
happy when the program opened at
HCC, said Hendricks.
The path to the B playoffs began last
spring, when the Hawks coaching staff
of Michael Annicchiarico, Josh Jalbert
and Ben Chin held a jamboree that featured practices, scrimmages and even
an exhibition game.
Right away, we could tell with his
size, his athletic ability and his desire
to play that he was going to be one of
our stronger players, said defensive
coordinator and HCC athletic director
Jalbert.
Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing in
around 210 with a stocky build, Hendricks was built to level defensive lines.
Like a boulder tumbling down a hill,
Hendricks was a north-south runner at
the beginning of the year, welcoming
contact at the line of scrimmage and

blasting through them with a head of

steam.
His power stuck out to us at the beginning. He wasnt the fastest kid weve
seen, but he is a big boy and he knew
how to be physical from his hockey
background, said Hawks special teams
coach Chin.
Raised in Strathmore, Hendricks has
been a rink rat every winter. He currently plays for the Midget A Strathmore Storm as a winger.
He certainly doesnt shy away from
the physical part. He is willing to go
out and be aggressive, searching for
contact, said Jalbert.
Hendricks was a touchdown factory
this season and was responsible for basically all of the Hawks touchdowns,
highlighted by an eight TD performance Oct. 21 in a victory over the Our
Lady of Mount Pleasant Royals.
We started challenging guys in practice and encouraged them to be creative
when they had the ball in their hands.
Thats when Jayden started to develop
these jukes and side-step moves, said
Jalbert. We put them in one-on-one
drills and told them to make the defender miss.
Slowly, Hendricks began mixing in
more of an east-west style game to
patch along with his downward running style.
He turned into more of a racehorse
than a plough horse; he began running
around guys, instead of just straight
through them.

Other teams certainly began to realize who was carrying the ball for the
Hawks.
Coaches would come up to us and
compliment him: Man, that 82 is one
heck of a player, said Annicchiarico.
Even with all his success in the end
zone, he never danced or popped off
with an exuberant touchdown, and is
always grounded during postgame interviews.
He is all business on the field. He
has a lot of experience from playing
other sports to know how to handle
himself and to lead by example. He
knows the guys feed off him and he
has become more of a leader as the
year progressed, said Chin.
Humble until the end: I cant do
most of what Ive done if I dont get
the great blocking from my teammates.
They have put me in position to succeed, said Hendricks.
He loves it and he cherishes it. He
wants the ball in his hands and wants
to carry the team, said Jalbert.
Playing both sides of the ball, Hendricks was relied on to be one of the
bigger plugs in the Hawks defensive
core.
After he was done scampering into
the end zone, Hendricks can often be
found on defence at the bottom of the
scrum trying to recover a fumble. Playing both ways as a linebacker, he was
the quarterback on defence.
His ability to read plays, play aggressive at his big size while keeping

HCC grad finds success with UBC Thunderbirds

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

Charles Nwoye moved around
a lot growing up Nigeria, Edmonton, Calgary, Strathmore, Lethbridge and now Vancouver
but he has found a home in the
defensive core with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds football team.
The craziest part about Nwyoes journey is, he never strapped
on pads before 2015.
Nwoye attended Holy Cross
Collegiate (HCC) where he
played on the basketball team
as a shooting guard, and on the
track team competing in the
100-metre and the high jump.
One day, he was attending his
brothers track meet just outside
McMahon Stadium when a former player for then University of
Calgary head coach Blake Nill
(who joined the UBC Thunderbirds in 2015) introduced himself and connected him with Nill.
A former player of mine began talking with (Charles) and
noticed he had all the makings of
a football player size, strength
and an athlete so he put me
in contact with him. Once I began talking with him, one thing
led to another and now he is out
here with us, said Nill.
Not only did Nwoye land on
his feet, he landed in one of the
top Canadian Interuniversity
Sport football programs in the
country.
In his first year with the Thunderbirds, Nwoye was in the process of learning the most complicated team sport, but dressed
for the 51st Vanier Cup, one in
which the Thunderbirds shaved
the Universit de Montral Carabins 26-23 at Telus Stadium.
I got a lot more playing time

than I was expecting. I didnt

think that I was going to dress
for the Vanier Cup, but I did and
it was an amazing experience,
said the 6-foot-3, 240-pound
Nwoye, who rotates between
playing on the defensive line as
a linebacker and on the special
teams.
The Thunderbirds went 3-6
this season but made it all the
way back to the Canada West Final Hardy Cup against the U of
C Dinos. The Dinos trimmed the
T-Birds in a nail biter, 46-43, advancing to the U Sports Mitchell
Bowl a national semifinal for
the Vanier Nov. 19 at McMahon.
The Thunderbirds defeated
the University of Regina Rams
40-34 the week prior at Mosaic
Stadium at Taylor Field.
It would have been real nice
to win that one, but playing on
this team has given me a great
opportunity to see a lot of Canada, said Nwoye.
Nwoye moved to Edmonton
from Nigeria when he was in
Grade 5. From there, his father
took a job in Calgary and moved
his family to Strathmore. Nwoye
rarely travelled outside the Calgary area and never stepped
foot in Vancouver until heading
away to university.
UBC was his second post-secondary campus. Nwoye graduated from HCC at 16 years of
age and completed two years of
study at the University of Lethbridge. Now 20, he is working
towards a degree in economics
and can see staying out west
when he is done.
His stats wont jump off the
page he recorded one tackle
his first year and six more this
past season but he is coming
along just the way the T-Birds

coaching staff envisioned it

would.
If the player has the willingness to step outside their comfort level and try football, then
this is a good spot for it. Players have to have the desire to
get better if they want to play
on this team, and Charles definitely has that, said Nill. He
definitely has a lot of work to do
if he wants to expand his role,
but he is an outstanding young
man from a great family, and if
he keeps improving at the rate
he is and where we thought he
would be, he will get better.
Now a football junkie, Nwoye
watches the New England Patriots of the NFL and some of his
former teammates who play in
the CFL whenever he gets the
opportunity.
He has also planted the football bug in his younger brother
Alex.
Alex is a wide receiver for the
Strathmore Community Football
Association senior Badgers and
a Grade 10 student at HCC.
We stay pretty close and share
stories. I think he beat up on a
team by 120 points a few weeks
ago, said Charles. I realize that
he has the potential in him too,
so I want him to get the playing
time in and the experience so he
is more prepared when he gets
to this next level.
Charles came home one
day and was really enthusiastic
about the sport, said Alex. He
brought me out to the field and
had me running routes, playing
catch and it grew on me.
While it was love at first snap
for Charles, he might have a little bit of work to do on Alex,
as Alex is focused on the upcoming basketball season and
will be a shooting guard for

his eyes on the quarterback at all times

allowed him to succeed defensively,
said Jalbert. He has great knowledge
for the flow of the game and what is
going on.
While football isnt new to Hendricks,
his meteoric rise as an elite tailback has
made life difficult in regards to which
sports path to follow.
He missed snaps this season due to
his hockey commitment and wonders
what type of commitment crunch it
would be if he suited up for the SCFA
Badgers next season.
But those are worries for a much later time. As for right now, Hendricks is
focused on leading his team into the
playoffs, along with his studies.
Like most kids, Hendricks would like
to continue playing sports as long as he
can, but sees himself getting into education one day, becoming a teacher.

the Hawks. But you

never know where
sports can take you,
just ask Charles.
I think about it all
the time. Its so surreal, looking back
two years; I would
have never thought
I would be playing
for arguably the best
program in Canada,
said Charles.
This is a once in a
lifetime opportunity
and I want to make
the most out of it.

MERCER,

HENDRICKS, Mary
Josephine (nee Riley)

James Albert Neville

March 8, 1926 - Nov. 5, 2016
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather after a long,
full and productive life. Jim was born in Nakusp,
BC, and grew up in New Westminster. At the age of
fourteen, he went to sea as an apprentice to become
a master mariner. His early seafaring experiences
included the merchant marine service and whaling
ships in the North Pacific. He enlisted in the Royal
Canadian Navy in 1943 and actively served in the
North Atlantic for the remainder of WW II. His wartime experiences included convoy escorts and U-boat
hunting. He remained in the Naval reserve for several
years after WWII, during which time he worked for
the Union Steamship Company and on dredges in the
Fraser River.
Jim met his future wife Olive April Hadley in Newfoundland during the war. They were married in
1946. Jim left his maritime pursuits in 1955 and
with their four sons they moved to the Cariboo region
in central B.C. There they were involved in ranching
and other business enterprises. Later in life Jim and
April returned to the west coast, where Jim worked
for the BC Ferries as well as operating vessels of their
own. Born to be nomads, Jim and April made many
moves during their 59 years of married life. As a
result of their genuine congeniality, they gathered a
wide circle of friends wherever they went.
Jim was predeceased by April and son Robin. He
was the patriarch of a large extended family living in
Alberta, B.C., Yukon and Washington State. He maintained an active interest and involvement in the lives
of all his family, for whom he was a considerate and
patient mentor, friend, and role model. Left to mourn
are his sons Jim (Betty Lou), Dan (Maureen) and
Brian, as well as eight grandchildren and ten greatgrandchildren. He was an honourable, dignified and
authentic gentleman whose example will continue to
guide us.
There will a celebration of Jims life on November 27
at 13:00 in the Legion hall at Strathmore, Alberta.
