Themed presentation Smart Grids

The worldwide market volume for smart grid technology will increase to
$118.1 billion by 2019. (Transparency Market Research)
Dependable, high-performance grids will play a key role in
the achievement of the energy-policy goals in Germany
and Europe. However, the creation of a smart infrastructure
poses a significant challenge to a variety of industrial sectors.
Energy generation, storage and consumption need to be more
closely integrated. To promote innovative solutions the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy has initiated a
funding program entitled Smart Energy Showcases Digital
Agenda for the Energy Transition. The goal is to develop and
fund projects in selected model regions projects which
ensure a secure energy supply under high loads and with a
high proportion of intermittent power generation. Organizations from all over the world (ranging from component
suppliers to research institutes) can apply for funding. The
sole condition is that they have at least one branch office
or business establishment in Germany.

Can this funding program serve as a model for other countries? And to what extent will recent developments such as
Big Data and Cloud Computing contribute to the creation of
high-performance grids? These and other questions will be
on the agenda at the themed presentation Smart Grids
at HANNOVER MESSE.
In 2016 the 7th edition of the themed presentation Smart
Grids will showcase hardware, software and current projects.
Embedded in the worlds leading industrial show, this event
is a magnet for public utilities, power plant operators, grid
operators, production and plant managers, energy managers,
installation experts, product developers, international media
representatives and business delegations.

Words of welcome
from the patron of the event
The creation of the European Energy Union with a forward looking climate policy is one of the
European Unions priorities for the years to come. We need to change the way we produce,
transport and consume energy in all areas of our society and economy. Our continent can
address these challenges better, faster and cheaper if we do it together. New technologies
are the key to success in this regard not only in Europe, but also worldwide. This is why I am
more than pleased to take over the patronage of Energy at the HANNOVER MESSE 2016.
Energy presents the key aspects to a sustainable and integrated energy system: power
generation, transmission, distribution, and storage as well as mobility solutions. The growing
global demand for energy can only be met sustainably through the expansion of renewable
energy sources and improved energy efficiency. This requires new and ever improving technologies. Energy provides an overview of what is already technically possible and what the near
future will bring. It is an opportunity to present new ideas and solutions, to exchange ideas
with experts and to learn more about the latest technologies and projects around the energy
supply of the future.

Maro efovi, Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Energy Union

Partner Country USA

Shannon Fraser, Energy Industry Specialist, U.S. Department of Commerce
Beginning in 2009, the United States has made an unprecedented investment in the modernization of its
electricity grid and has since become a world leader in the development and deployment of smart grid
technologies. The growth of the domestic smart grid market over the last 5 years and increased spending in
international markets are now combining to provide global opportunities for leading U.S. energy innovators.
In 2016, the United States is making its debut as the Partner Country at HANNOVER MESSE, the worlds leading
industrial technology fair. Energy efficiency, state-of-the-art production facilities, and smart technologies will
be key elements of the Partner Country USA program. Participants from over 70 countries from throughout
Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, and the Western Hemisphere attend HANNOVER MESSE, thereby providing
ample opportunity for U.S. energy companies to showcase their Energy IT solutions, connect with new and
existing partners worldwide, and expand international sales. With high attendance by senior representatives
from energy companies, industry associations, and regulatory bodies, HANNOVER MESSE is an excellent forum
to further discuss the convergence of international standards for smart grid technologies and the need to
ensure interoperability a critical area to help drive future market development worldwide.

What the exhibitors say

Alf Henryk Wulf, Chairman, ALSTOM Power AG, Berlin, Germany
HANNOVER MESSE and the flagship event Energy are a shop window for the technological advances
spawned by the transition to renewables. At HANNOVER MESSE Alstom has made this transformation
process visible to all concerned for example, in the area of electric power transmission and onshore and
offshore power generation. Smart grid solutions for the monitoring of automated transformer substations
and networked battery storage solutions for the compensation of grid instabilities will make a decisive
contribution to energy efficiency. The large number of visitors at our stand from countries all over the
globe is a clear indication that Germany and German technology are front-runners and models for
infrastructure solutions worldwide.
