Blamed for everything, news

media needed more than ever

ot that Im getting paranoid or anything, but its

pretty clear we have a
president-elect who seriously dislikes the news media.

In fact, Donald Trump is making it his

mission to take them down, although Im
not exactly sure what that all means. Access to this president could be so limited,
wed better save a file photo of Mr. Trump
just in case we dont see him live for a
while.
At one point in his career, Mr. Trump
enjoyed the media and would rarely shy
away from any camera. After two years on
the campaign trail, things have changed
dramatically.
Mr. Trump would regularly point out reporters at rallies to rile up his supporters.
He wants to open up libel laws to make it
easier to sue, and makes no secret he wants
to chip away at the First Amendment.
Even Fox News reporter Megyn Kelly
says journalists need to steel their spines
to get ready for the barrage of attacks over
the next four years.
Now, I realize the news media is far
from perfect. Especially when you include
social media. And there are some valid
reasons why Mr. Trump should be upset.
And because of the internet, stories dont
go away. The same questions are asked
over and over and over again. Then some
outlets just plain get it wrong. Other websites make it impossible to separate fact
from opinion. And with a Twitter-typing
president, the flames of inaccuracy are fed
continually.
The small White House press pool,
which follows a presidents every move

for their news organizations, has been impacted because Mr. Trump ignores press
protocols. On Tuesday, the Trump family
ditched the press by having dinner at a
Manhattan steakhouse. This may seem like
a little thing, but the usual arrangement allows the press some access in case something newsworthy happens.
Transparency? Forget about it. There are
no laws that require a president to give
daily briefings or press conferences. And
if a reporter writes about an issue Mr.
Trump doesnt like, that person could have
their access revoked.
This message has been sent. You better
fall in line or forfeit your job.
Just this week, Mr. Trump went after
the New York Times and Washington Post
for what he perceived as inaccurate reporting. Problem was he didnt mention
any specifics or information backing his
claims. Some of you may think the newspapers are just part of the liberal media, but
those organizations are thorough fact
checkers, something sorely needed after
any Trump speech.
Some believe Mr. Trumps constant attacks on the news media create a cloud
over whats fact and fiction. Although
politicians do this to some extent, Mr.
Trump is relentless. Instead of giving the
public real answers about how his transition team is doing, he just goes to Twitter

It doesnt matter that they have named

A classic shoot the messenger mentality.
So what can Mr. Trump do to show his
administration is transparent? One easy
solution is to hold regular press conferences. Given the question-and-answer
format, questions can be hard to predict,
making it easier to get real answers instead of prepared statements.
Needless to say, it will be an interesting

plays in reporting from the White House.
If this election tells us anything, the role

important.

Judge rejects Claremonts bid for local water control

laremonts quest to
take over the water system suffered a devastating setback last week, and
now the city plans to respond.
In a 38-page tentative decision
handed down on November 10, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Richard
Fruin refuted the citys claims for eminent domain made during the weekslong trial, which concluded August 11.
The Claremont City Council met in a
closed-session Wednesday night in response to Judge Fruins tentative decision, and began drafting a response to
the court on Thursday. The city has 15
days from the date of the decision to respond to the judge and try to change his
mind.
If the judges decision remains, the
city would draft a formal appeal to be
voted on by the city council, according
to a press release.
The city was tasked with convincing
the judge to determine that local control
over the water systemas opposed to
the patronage of the investor-owned
utility Golden State Water Company
(GSW)proved a more necessary
use, or served the publics best interest.
However, the city, as of now, has failed
to convince the judge in that regard.
Judge Fruin noted early in the tentative decision the court was expecting
some sort of list of reasons from the city
council to support the takeover, but did
not get one.
However, so far as the court can discern, the City did not prepare any report
that provides a complete list of reasons
for its exercise of eminent domain powers to acquire the Claremont Water Assets, Judge Fruin wrote.
The citys original complaint, drafted
in December 2014 after the passage of

ore than
1000 protestors met in
front of Honnold Library at the Claremont
Colleges as students
prepared to demonstrate against the election and rhetoric of
President Donald
Trump.
The Friday afternoon
protest was peaceful, with
demonstrators taking to College Avenue after sharing remarks at the library.

Measure W, did not properly identify

reasons in support of claiming eminent
domain of the water system, Judge
Fruin said. Only in the first amended
complaint, drafted in June 2015, did any
supportive reasons appear.
The Resolutions of Necessity drafted
by the city, Judge Fruin said, also failed
to provide vital information in support
of the takeover.
The Resolutions [of Necessity] do
not offer any factual findings for a taking
of a privately-owned and operated water
public utility, Judge Fruin asserted.
The judge called out the city for not
having any of the city councilmembers
who voted on the resolutions of necessity testify at trial. The only city official
noted throughout the tentative decision
is City Manager Tony Ramos.
Mr. Ramos, who was designated by
the citys attorneys as the person most
knowledgeable in regards to the
takeover, said during testimony that
lower water rates, which was billed as a
paramount reason for taking over the
water system, would not be a result of
the eminent domain takeover.
In addition, the judge writes, Mr.
Ramos testified the city did not plan to
make any additional capital improvements once the water system is acquired. But the city allowed an expert
witness, Michael Thornton, to testify
that he would recommend a $6.9 million investment over two years on a
number of projects, including installing
pumps at the Pomello Reservoir and
constructing a new reservoir at Johnsons Pasture.
It is difficult for the court to determine how Thorntons testimony is relevant, the judge wrote. He is
suggesting capital improvements that
the City Manager testified that the city
has no plans to undertake, and is implying that the cost of such improvements

can be funded by further borrowing that

can be repaid through higher water rates
charged to Claremonts subscribers.
The court also rebuffed claims that
greed on the part of GSW was a direct
cause of the citys water rates increasing, noting that the price escalations
were caused not by GSW but by extrinsic factors. He also said the city
mischaracterized the water rate adjustment mechanism (WRAM)a surcharge held up by the city as an example
of overcharging residentsas a
penalty. The judge described WRAM
as a temporary fee that is implemented against customers when water
usage falls below the standard set by the
Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
The judge also sided with GSW in regards to Claremonts operational deal
with La Verne, which would have allowed the citys westerly neighbor to assist in operations should the city
succeed in the takeover. GSW had
stressed throughout the trial that La
Verne was a sketchy operator, failing
lead contamination tests, drafting incomplete consumer confidence reports
and offering inferior maintenance.
The city tried to make the case during
the trial that rate applications under local
control would be more transparent under
the Brown Actwhich allows for public
comment on any listed agenda item
and subject to review by the California
Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
The judge asserted that while rate applications to the PUC are public but not tailored to public participation, it is the
fault of the legislature and not GSW.
The city has not demonstrated that
Golden States decisions in its management of the Claremont water system are
less than competent, Judge Fruin
wrote.
During public comment immediately
preceding Wednesdays closed-session

meeting, residents expressed both support for the city and scorn over the case.
Sally Seven noted that legal counsel
should have emphasized that local control would result in no high-paid executives to support, but was nonetheless
supportive of city staff.
I still think we have a good case and
I think water is important, Ms. Seven
said.
Betty Crocker said that she had
never felt so hopeless after opening
her water bill after the decision, and told
the council the city was counting on
them to win the case.
We are with you, she said. Well
stand on street corners. Well raise more
money. Well put more yard signs up.
You tell us what we want, but we need
all five of you on board.
Jacob Patterson said the tentative decision was avoidable, had the city relayed the proper findings to the court.
Hopefully, maybe we can convince
[Judge Fruin] that he was wrong, but
this is not the case of a judgewho
doesnt have any eminent domain experiencenot understanding the law, he
said. This is somebody who, when I
read this decision, hes like, you guys
had everything handed to you and you
still failed.
But the most scathing comments
came from resident Jim Belna, who has
been a fixture in the opposition to the
takeover for years. He called Claremonts feasibility study a fraud, admonished the council for the money spent
during the trial and accused the council
of listening to self-deluded activists
and opportunistic lawyers who flattered
you and told you what you wanted to
hear.
Eminent domain fantasy camp is
now officially over, he added.

WEATHER

High pressure should continue to

bring fair, warm conditions to the
local area through Sunday morning.
A series of approaching storms,
however, should cause high pressure
to shift and weaken, allowing for rain
chances beginning early Monday,
continuing through Monday night.
Amounts should be light, averaging
around a half-inch or less.
High pressure should return, bringing fair and mild conditions for most
of next week: seasonal temperatures
with highs in the upper-60s to low70s and lows from 48 to 53 with
mostly light winds. Gary London
for the COURIER

actually ups that number when it itemizes the cost of attendance (COA),
adding in expenses like $800 in books
and supplies and $1400 in personal expenses. The total is $71,917.
The number is certainly cause for
sticker shock but, as in any school, its
important to take whats known as return on investment (ROI) into account.
Not only does Harvey Mudd offer a
top-notch education, attending HMC all
but guarantees that graduates will be
gainfully employed. Very gainfully.
Like the other five undergraduate institutions flourishing in Claremont, Harvey Mudd is a private, liberal arts college. Its set apart from neighboring
institutions by its STEM-oriented curriculum.
Fledgling Mudders find themselves in
a highly competitive learning environment. Only 23 percent of applicants
make it into the school. The average
SAT score for an HMC student is 1520
out of 1600. Faculty members tend to be
distinguished in their fields and the odds,
a 9:1 student-to-faculty ratio, are ever in
the favor of the colleges attendees.
Courses in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math are particularly rigorous. Newly-graduated stu-

Seventy-five percent of HMC freshmen are there with the help of scholarships and grants from the school, as
well as from the state and federal government. Admission to the college is
need-blind for US applicants, which
means school officials dont deny students who have no means to pay for
their education.
The average financial aid award for
students is about $36,775, some
$28,657 of which comes from Harvey
Mudd itself, as opposed to government
sources. Some students get much more.
The average debt of HMCs 2015
graduates was $27,483, according to
collegedata.com. Its not bad, and exemplifies a paradox in higher education.
Attending a cheaper school like a UC
or Cal State university is not necessarily
cheaper than going to a more costly and
prestigious institution like HMC.
For one, higher-paid graduates yield
bigger alumni donations. A college with
a large endowmentHMCs was $289

For this reason, a student may find their

That Harvey Mudd College students
have bright futures is borne out by the

$105,555.
Largely due to the efforts of President

The number of Harvey Mudd students who are women was 46.6 percent

City clerk confirms incumbents; Schroeder, Calaycay to rerun

wo seats are up for grabs

on the Claremont City
Council. Incumbents
Larry Schroeder and Corey
Calaycay will both seek reelection.

The filing period for nomination papers

and candidate statements for the March 7,
2017 Claremont City Council election
began Monday, November 14. Claremont
city councilmembers are elected to staggered four-year terms, with three members elected at one election, and two at the
next.
At this point, we have two official
candidatesLarry and Corey are both
qualified as of Tuesday afternoon, Claremont City Clerk Shelley Desautels said.
Should no opposing candidates file,
the election will be canceled and Mr.
Schroeder and Mr. Calaycay will retain
their seats.
The 2015 city council election was cancelled due to lack of candidates. Michael
Keenan had expressed interest in making
a fourth run at a seat but opted out at the
last minute.
Prior to 2015, the last time a municipal
election was canceled was in 1988 when
former councilmembers Bill McCready
and Judy Wright were reappointed.
Three other potential candidates have
pulled papers for next years race, Ms.
Desautels said, but no one had completed the filing process as of Wednesday afternoon. The deadline is December 12.
All it really means right now is that the
filing deadline is set at December 12.
There will not be an extended deadline,
Ms. Desautels said.
Should an incumbent have elected not
to rerun, the deadline to file would have
been extended to December 14.
Potential candidates need a minimum
of 20 supporter signatures from Claremont residents who are also registered to
vote. Ms. Desautels recommends that

Residents are not permitted to sign
more nominations papers than seats that
are available, she explained. We recommend up to 30 in case there are any

For the March election, residents may
only sign the nomination papers of two
candidates; any more than that will be
disqualified.
Councilmember Corey Calaycay, who
officially filed with the clerk on Tuesday
afternoon, will seek his fourth term on the
council.
We have challenges that need to be focused on, Mr. Calaycay said. We have
round two with regard to the water. We
need to take a look at that and see what
our options are with that fight, because
residents spoke pretty loudly.
Another issue Mr. Calaycay would like

to continue working on is public safety.

Theres been an uptick. We need to
continue to be vigilant in our efforts to
support our police department to keep
residents safe, he said.
A third pressing issue for Mr. Calaycay
is the citys management of storm water.
We need to continue to try to work
with the agencies involved to find good
ways to address concerns while keeping
it cost-effective. We dont want to contaminate our ground water, he said.
Mr. Calaycay is in the early stages of
his campaign, but has selected Bill
Bueller as his treasurer.
I have people who are prepared to become involved when we get to that point.
Now Im taking care of what I need to do
to file my papers.
Mayor Pro TemLarry Schroeder is in
his second term and said, should he be reelected, he would like to continue to focus
on financial sustainability.
Eight years ago the economy was

badwe had finished the Village West

but many of the shops were empty.
Through a combination of the council
and recovering economy, we hardly have
any retail open downtown now, Mr.
Schroeder said.
During his last two terms, Mr. Schroeder said he is most proud of the citys ability to maintain a balanced budget.
We got the financial sustainability
committee togetherit was a good committeewe made a course adjustment
and, after some trying times, the city is in
the black. So thats good.
Mr. Schroeder also has interest in seeing the water system acquisition through,
among other concerns.
One of the reasons Im running is to
shepherd this water thing through, he
said. Other projects are to finish the master plans for Foothill Boulevard and the
Wilderness Park. Were coming along
with those projects.
But finance is first and foremost for Mr.
Schroeder, who cites the recent opening
of Keck Graduate Institute in Village West
as the successful introduction of new
business without altering the character of
the city.
Look at Keck at First and Indian Hill,
and then on the ground floor is Blaze Pizza. Thats perfect. Thats the sort of thing
we need to do with retail. We have more
work to do to keep Claremont the way it
is, he said.
As for his campaign, he served as his
own treasurer twice before and said he
plans to do it again.
Individuals interested in running for
city council must be at least 18 years of
age, be a citizen of the United States and
resident of the state of California, and be
a registered voter and resident within the
Claremont city limits. Potential candidates should visit the city clerk at 207

The yearly cost for an undergraduate to attend Cal

average indebtedness of Cal Poly grads is $22,224.
This amount is a little more than $5,000 greater than

Whats more, the students must pay off their CSU

to the Cal Poly website, the schools alumni earn an

and other goods, in case things got really crazyor
worse.
The 2016 presidential election will no doubt be remembered much more than Y2K. Rather than a technological quirk that tickled our fears and left us
red-faced, this twisty, vitriolic campaign and election
and its jolting outcome said volumes about American
politics and society.
It was not just the race (or, really, fight) between
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and their supporters. There were also all those propositions on Californias ballot.
There were 17 statewide propositions. That doesnt
include Measure G, the school bond initiative on the
ballot here in Claremont. At least there werent five or
six more like in Los Angeles. Or 22 morewas it
22?like in San Francisco. And, yes, there have been
17 or more statewide propositions on 30 different ballots in the last century. There was one ballot, in 1914,
with 48 statewide propositions. But 17 propositions
18 here in Claremontis an awful lot.
And all of this on top of the Trump/Hillary contest.
Thank goodness for the voter video project. For
those who took advantage of this online resource, it
was a real salve, a little bit of straightforward sanity,
in the confusing, stressful campaign. Make that 17 little bits of straightforward sanity. Seventeen threeminute bits to be exact.
Sponsored by the Rose Institute at Claremont
McKenna College, the voter video project was a series of short videos available online. In each, a student

observer
explained a proposition in an objective, even-handed
manner. Several students took part, each appearing in
two or three videos, and each video followed the
same format, starting with an explanation of what the
measure was and what it would do, then a run-down
of the pros and cons and concluding with a list of who
was for and who was against the measure and online
links for more information.
Easy-peasy, as a friend would say. These videos
made things much easier when there was that huge,
heavy, scary official voter guide (it had a record-setting 224 pages, for goodness sake!) and all those articles and ads and telephone calls. Not to mention all
the Hillary/Trump sniping and quipping. There was
always more information we could look at if we
wanted to delve deeper.
The voter video project was a valuable resource for
those of us who took advantage of it during this
stressful time. And it was from right here in Claremont, from one of the Colleges in this case.
This was just one undertaking in Claremont that
makes life more fulfilling and rewarding. Just look at
some of the projects going on in our schools, enabled
with grants through the Claremont Educational Foundation.
Claremont Heritage will expand its third grade
local history program, beginning by visiting every
third grade classroom with an education trunk full of
interactive visuals and continuing with a bus tour of
Claremont landmarks.
The Claremont Museum of Art, through its AfterARTS program, will train Claremont High School
students to develop and run monthly after-school artmaking workshops at each of Claremonts seven elementary schools.

The Inland Valley Repertory Theatre will engage

seventh and eighth graders at El Roble in readers theater, allowing novice students to interact with literary
texts and build relationships with performing artists,
first through the program and then as audience members at the Candlelight Pavilion spring production of
Little Women, the Musical.
In partnership with the WorkAbility Program at
the high school, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens
Grow Our Future program provides worksite training
for high school students with disabilities, giving them
experience that will help them when they transition
from school into the workforce.
Jean Merrills third grade students at Chaparral
School will extend their collaborative work in creating a play with Claremont High School students focusing on local history through the lens of letters sent
home by college students. The play will be presented
to all third-grade students in the district.
A student-designed renovation will be implemented in the 600 quad at the high school, employing
curricular standards from math, language arts and science to make the space more environmentally
friendly, easier for disabled students to navigate and
more aesthetically pleasing.
Students at El Roble will demonstrate their understanding of the American Revolution by developing a
puppet showindependently researching and producing a script and working in collaborative groups to
create puppets of historic figures. The scripts, focusing on eight important events, will be filmed using
green screen and iMovie.
With guidance from multidisciplinary artist and
writer Gustavo Alberto Garcia Vava, sixth grade students at Mountain View School will write and produce
their own films exploring social, historic and cultural
elements of their curriculum. The films will be shown
at a special year-end Mountain View Film Festival.
This is a bounty of enrichment and enlightenment
and much to be thankful for in this harvest season
and all the more so in a time of tumult and uncertainty, to say the least.

Electoral College?
Dear Editor:
In the past week, weve seen several
Hillary Clinton supporters calling for
an end to the Electoral College. Bill
Maher suggested to Eric Holder that the
Electoral College is unfair and needs to
be changed with a constitutional
amendment. Michael Moore delivered
a note to Donald Trump that read You
lost (based on the popular vote, I assume). Step aside.
In addition, thousands of protestors
are upset with an election outcome that,
they argue, ignored the will of the
American voters. The hypocrisy among
Democratic elites is stunning!
Yes, Clinton won the popular vote,
but we all know thats not how we elect
the president and everyone knew that
before November 8. And Clinton supporters should know this better than
anyone, because the Democratic Party
used the same process to eventually
nominate her during the primaries.
Bernie Sanders was up against 700plus superdelegates who pledged their
support to Clinton before a single vote
was cast in Iowa. Yes, Clinton did
eventually win the popular vote during
the primaries, but there is plenty of research that shows people like to vote
for a winner. And Clinton was the
anointed winner in February because of
superdelegates who, at every turn, ignored the will of the Democratic voters.
Sanders won the popular vote in
New Hampshire by almost 23 points
(60 percent to 37 percent), yet Clinton
was awarded 15 delegates to Sanders
16a blowout in the popular vote but a
virtual tie in delegates.
Sanders won the popular vote in
Wisconsin by over 13 points (135,000
votes), yet he received just two more
delegates than Clinton (49 to 47).
More shockingly, Sanders won the
popular vote in Michigan by over
17,000 votes, yet Clinton was awarded
13 more delegates than Sanders (80 to

READERS COMMENTS

67). Apparently, its okay to ignore the

will of Michigan voters. How is this
better than the Electoral College?
Trump won Michigan and Wisconsin
by just 13,000 and 27,000 votes, respectively. Any reasonable person
could argue, based on primary results,
that Sanders would have been more
competitive in the Rust Belt statesthe
exact states Democrats needed to win
the presidency.
Clinton and the Democrats didnt lose
the election because of the Electoral
College. They lost the election because
they stacked the deck during the primaries and ignored the will of hundreds of
thousands of their own voters. If they
want to change the rules of the game,
they need to start with their own party.

The Day After

Dear Editor:
Many of us are grieving, and will be
so for some time to come, after absorbing the results of Tuesdays election. It
is fitting to mourn the potential loss of
so much for which we have all worked
so hard. So lets acknowledge our profound sorrow for Tuesdays loss.
In the midst of our grief I do believe
a word about hubris is in order here.
Over the past 30 to 40 years we have
forgotten a whole bunch of people,
many of whom live in what is often
called fly over country. Last Tuesday,
they forgot us. And I would say, rightly
so. These are people who have been
marginalized and discarded. These used
to be the people who were the bedrock
of the Democratic Party.
But I also want us to hear what

Michael Moore had to say on election

night: I dont know how things will
turn out but, however they turn out
tonight, thats where we start tomorrow
morning.
The Good Book enjoins us to weep
with those who weep and to rejoice
with those who rejoice. And we have
some wonderful victories that are cause
for much rejoicing. Anthony Portantino
won by a landslide. As Merrill Ring
pointed out, Democrats had significant
victories by many promising women in
both the house and senate. Many of the
ballot propositions we endorsed or opposed turned out as we had hoped they
would.
We can rejoice that we have bold
leadership ready to step forward to prepare us Democrats for battle; it will indeed be a fight to preserve what we can
of President Obamas legacy. We can
celebrate Elizabeth Warrens and
Bernie Sanders leadership. We should
be thankful for Keith Ellison and
Howard Dean. We are not bereft of allies to encourage and fortify us for the
days and weeks ahead.
I would only lift up the statement of
Elizabeth Warren she issued yesterday,
for in it is much cause for hope:
We will stand up to bigotry. No
compromises ever on this one. Bigotry
in all its forms. We will fight back
against attacks on Latinos, on African
Americans, on women, on Muslims, on
immigrants, on disabled Americans, on
anyone.
So let us go forth with the words of
Cesar Chavez ringing boldly in our
hearts and minds, Dont mourn. Organize.
Yours in solidarity for the struggle
ahead,

John C. Forney
President, Democratic Club
of Claremont

America is Now Great Again

Dear Editor:
With the election of Donald J.
Trump, America is now going to become great again, truly great. Like all
of you, I was on the edge of my seat
during the election results, awaiting the
truly great America to take shape.
When it became apparent that Trump
was going to win, I pulled out the big
gunsyes, real guns. I was on the edge
of my seat thinking, Here comes the
America I know and love. I shot my
pistols up into the air. It woke up my
babies, and my neighbors were probably frightened. But, hey, they simply
dont love America like I do.
As a Muslim, I personally couldnt
be happier. Finally, I get to do the real
work of telling on my terrorist friends
and family. Ive been trying to tell
Obama for years that my kids scream
incessantly when I dont buy them
candy at Vons. Dont even get me
started on those terrorists who work
there. They have bouquets of candy
bars as you enterbouquets!
I would also hope that the people of
Claremont will join me in asking Donald to allow me to stay in America. I,
too, want to keep my freedom like all
of you. I will do whatever it takes to
blend into this great country with its
true American values. I will even take
off my hijab, so that Trump and whoever else feels like it can exercise their
freedom to grab me by the pu**y.
America, we were truly imprisoned
by blacks, Latinos, Muslims, immigrants, women and the LGBT community for far too long. But dont worry.
Just praise the Lord, we are free at last!
Dunia Ramadan

the comments of Claremont Mayor Sam Pedroza during the annual Veterans Day observance Friday in Memorial Park. Captain Groce gave the keynote address at the event, which was
attended by 100 people. In addition to the speeches, the El
Roble and Claremont High School marching bands offered the
prelude. Veterans Day, which is celebrated in many countries,
started out as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World
War I but was changed in the 1950s to honor all veterans.

OUR TOWN
Community Interfaith service on
Thanksgiving eve
The Claremont Interfaith Council (CIC) will hold
its 26th annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on
Thanksgiving eve, Wednesday, November 23 at 7
p.m. at Claremont Presbyterian Church, 1111 N.
Mountain Ave. in Claremont.
The CIC invites all residents of the Claremont

community to gather to share gratitude for the bounties experienced as citizens of a nation founded on
core principals of freedom and liberty, ideals it believes are most clearly visible when people of diverse
religious and spiritual traditions stand side-by-side to
express them.
The service will feature keynote speaker Rev. Joel
Fairley, pastor of First Baptist Church of Claremont,
and will also include clergy and lay leaders from
other faith communities in the Claremont area.
A broad spectrum of music will be offered, including a multi-congregation choir directed by Janelle Anderson and the planned participation of area high
school students. There will also be contemporary se-

lections included and communal singing.

Given the tensions in our area and throughout the
country in these initial weeks following the presidential election, it seems particularly vital that we as a
community come together and understand that the
spiritual basis for the many values we share transcend
partisan politics, said Cantor Paul Buch of Temple
Beth Israel.
We also benefit emotionally from the simple act
of singing and worshiping as one community. I believe this service the evening before the holiday truly
gives Thanksgiving Day the exact context in which it
should be set.
As has become the custom, an offering will be received at the gathering, with the full proceeds going
to Inland Valley Hope Partners in support of their
emergency food assistance program.

CHS cross country preps for Southern Section finals

laremont High School cross country got the job done during the Division 2 Southern Section Prelims
last Saturday, saving their big effort for the
finals this weekend at Riverside.
Claremont boys won their heat with a score of 95
and team time of 1:17:02, which
SPORTING
was just a tad slower than Loyola,
LIFE
who won the first heat with a team
time of 1:16:21. Ryan Renken and Owen Bishop
crossed the finish line shoulder to shoulder at 15:07
for a sixth and seventh place finish.
The girls came in second in their heat with a team
time of 1:31:17, and with a score of 76 narrowly
edged out San Marcos at 73. Of the three heats in Di-

HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP

vision 2, Claremont was the fourth fastest behind

Saugus Capistrano Valley and San Marcos. Annie
Boos was the top finisher for Claremont at 17:33,
earning her fourth place.
But if these times seem underwhelming, it was really all part of Coach Bill Reeves strategy, which included cautioning his runners not to peak too early.
We are looking to win CIF with top two on the
podium, Coach Reeves said following practice on
Monday. During the prelims, the plan was to place
high enough to qualify, and that is precisely what
everyone did.
We did what we had to do to qualify next week

Public meetings address Keck

Graduate Institute expansion,
campus growth
The community is invited to attend the upcoming
meetings of Claremonts Traffic and Transportation
Commission and Architectural Commission regarding
the Keck Graduate Institute mixed-use project, parking expansions and projected campus growth.
The traffic and transportation commission will
meet Monday, November 28 at 7 p.m. The commission review the traffic study and provide comments.
The architectural commission will meet Wednesday, December 14 at 7 p.m. The architectural commission is the decision-making body regarding the
projects environmental documentation, as well as the
design review for all new buildings, landscaping and
other site changes, including a setback reduction request.
Both meetings will be held in the council chamber
at city hall, 207 N. Harvard Ave.
The Keck Graduate Institute is proposing a project
that involves development of two new, four-story
campus buildings on the existing vacant lot at the
southwest corner of Bucknell Avenue and Wharton
Drive/Santa Fe Street. Buildings would include residential units, academic space and ancillary uses.
Keck also seeks an expansion of three existing
parking lots and development of one new parking lot,
resulting in a total increase of 212 parking spaces.
Plans include new and remodeled open spaces such
as courtyards, plazas, walkways, streetscapes and
landscaping.
Keck projects enrollment increases from 456 students, faculty and staff in the 20152016 academic
year to 723 students, faculty and staff in the 2021
2022 academic year.
Pursuant to the California Environmental Quality
Act (CEQA) an initial study has been prepared for the

13

proposed project, which determined there could be

significant impacts. However, through the incorporation of mitigation measures, these impacts would be
reduced to less than significant levels the study
showed. Impacts to all other study areas were found
to be less than significant, according to city staff. A
mitigated negative declaration (MND) has been prepared. The public review period for the initial study
and draft mitigated negative declaration will conclude
on December 1.
Copies of the project design plans are available in
the planning division at city hall, 207 Harvard Ave.

Professor shares his passion in CST art show

rtist He Qi was drawn

to faith and artistic expression at a time when
both were considered heresy.
He was attending middle school in
Nanjing, China in 1966 when Chairman
Mao launched his Cultural Revolution.
The decade-long movementaimed at
ridding the country of creeping capitalism and lingering traditions threatening
true Communist ideologywould ultimately cause the death, incarceration,
impoverishment and suffering of millions of people.
Much of the revolution was undertaken by Red Guards, young people who
became zealous soldiers in the war
against all things bourgeois.
Up to that time, He Qi (pronounced
her-chee) had his future mapped out for
him. His father, a mathematics professor
at Nanjing University, hoped young He,
his third and most clever child, would
follow in his footsteps. A neighbor, Lu
Sibai, an art professor at Beijing Normal
University, saw change in the wind,
however.
One day as He was playing with his
friends, Mr. Sibai beckoned, saying,
Please follow me. Ill show you something interesting.
Mr. Sibai was a master of Chinese ink
painting but had also studied in Paris,
gaining renown for his western-style oil
paintings with Chinese themes. He
showed Mr. Qi his collection of landscapes, still lifes and portraits.
It wasnt a good time to pursue mathematics, Mr. Sibai said. Did he want to
learn how to paint? Mr. Qi was interested, and Mr. Sibai began teaching him
the rudiments of painting.
Mr. Sibais warning was prescient.
The university closed, and Mr. Qis father became a laborer. He lost his
dream, Mr. Qi said.
His mother lost even more.
The middle school where she taught
was closed and her job replaced with
compulsory political study sessions. One
day, she quarreled with the director. It
was almost 6 oclock and she wanted to
go home and cook for her family.
Though the director insisted the session
continue, Mr. Qis mother gathered up
her papers and notes. In doing so, she inadvertently knocked a book to the
ground.
It was the Little Red Book, a collection of Maos quotes that served as a
bible for the revolutionary movement.
How dare you drop Chairman Maos
book! the director shouted.
He Qis mother was branded a
counter-revolutionary. She was ordered
to kneel in front of Maos portrait in the
public square twice-daily for a month,
once at 6 a.m. and again at 6 p.m., begging for the Chairmans forgiveness. The
humiliation prompted a nervous breakdown, from which she never recovered.
He was sent away from home to a remote commune located in the north part
of the city of Zhangshu. There, he engaged in backbreaking agricultural labor.

his paintings recently at Claremont

The teen was just one of 17 million intellectual youths conscripted into the
up to the mountains and down to the
farms program. They are now called the
Lost Generation.
Mr. Qi managed to get a hold of a couple art magazines. The cover of one featured a warm-hued paining of the
Madonna and child by Renaissance master Raphael, with the baby so smiling.
The teen was inspired and painted his
rendition of the idyllic scene.
One day, an old schoolmate came to
visit Mr. Qi. When he saw his friends
painting, he said, This is Christian. It
turned out he came from a Christian
family, something hed never discussed.
Even before the Cultural Revolution,
many viewed Christianity as a pernicious Western influence.
The boys talked aloud that night. Mr.
Qis friend told him a bit about the religion and then sang a hymn. Listening to
the refrain of Hallelujah while gazing
at the starry sky had a strong impact on
He.
Occasionally, Mr. Qi and a few other
boys would return to the city, stowing
away in a truck-bed full of pigs being
transported to the city. Hed check in on
his fractured family and learn more
about painting from Mr. Sibai.
Mr. Qi was eager to learn more about
Christianity. On his next visit to Nanjing
Mr. Qi visited a famous local landmark,
the gothic-styled St. Pauls Cathedral.
To his surprise, the immense Episcopal church was filled with machinery.
With the church turned into a factory and
most others in the country destroyed, it
would be years before Mr. Qi got the religious education he craved.
Still, he used his wits to improve his

situation. A competition was launched to

find a teen artist skillful enough to paint
Chinas revered leader. Mr. Qi, hoping
for a break from hard labor, entered the
fray. His portrait of Chairman Mao was
considered the best, and he embarked on
a double life.
He still continued to work on his commune but he occasionally traveled to another province, staying for perhaps a
week to create a portrait of Chairman
Mao to inspire residents. Then hed return to his commune.
He also continued to pursue his secret
passion. Hed managed to get more art
magazinesone featuring a reproduction of Leonardo da Vincis Last Supperand continued to paint iconic
Christian scenes.
By day I painted Chairman Mao. By
night, I painted Madonnas, he said.
In 1972, Chairman Mao suffered a
stroke. The people of China had little
love for the Gang of Four, a group that
included Maos ruthless wife Jiang Qing
and which attempted to fill the vacuum.
Maoism was on the wane, and schools
began to reopen.
Mr. Qi remained in the countryside for
a couple more years, but eventually went
on to study at Nanjing Normal University. By 1983, he was a professor at Nanjing Union Theological Seminary, where
he taught Medieval art.
He suddenly had full access to the
Bible and religious courses. The more
information he got, the more Christianity
resonated with Mr. Qi.
I was moved by faculty and students.
I joined their worship, he said. In 1989
he was baptized. He studied Medieval art
in Hamburg, Germany, and toured extensively through Europe. There, Mr. Qi

glimpsed artistic masterpieces ranging

from gilded Byzantine icons to Picassos.
In 1992, he earned a doctorate in religious art from the Nanjing Art Institute.
He now divides his time between the
United States and China, bringing his
artistic and theological knowledge to
bear as a visiting professor or artist-inresidence.
Most recently he has been a professorin-residence at Claremont School of
Theology, a two-year post that will come
to an end this February. Between now
and then, you can visit the CST library
to see gicle prints and original paintings
by Mr. Qi as well as a couple of his
works rendered in silk needlework by
traditional Chinese artisans.
Mr. Qis biblical scenes meld influences ranging from Chinese folk art to
cubism to fauvism. Each painting carries
an atmosphere of devotion and a color
palette as vivid as a stained-glass window. Mr. Qis use of color reflects his
faith.
In the Creation story in the Hebrew
Bible, God said, Let there be light, he
said.
His artwork has earned him growing
fame, but thats not what drives Mr. Qi.
The Cultural Revolution is over but
the world is still enmeshed in chaos and
violence. Mr. Qi prefers to confront societys ills through his work.
There is so much suffering around
the world. As an artist, I am trying to assure a peaceful message. Thats important, sharing peace, he said. Even
though we are not living in a peaceful
world, when people worship in church,
they say, Peace be with you.

At Donahoosor the big chicken, as my kids have called it since
they first laid eyes on the massive
fiberglass rooster that has sit atop the
takeout restaurant since its opening in
the 1950sthe fried goodness is
served in simple square white donut
boxes.
Its not greasy by fried chicken standards and the white meat is tender and
juicy. There are strips and wings, but
my favorite is the good ol fried chicken with some of Donahoos steak fries,
cole slaw and a buttered dinner roll

roughly the size of a babys head.

One of the fringe benefits of dropping in for a box is the magnificent
odor that lingers for hours in my car
after I drive home. Fried food is, of
course, a delicacy to be enjoyed in
moderation, but I recommend a quick
trip down Garey Avenue to the big
chicken. Bring cash, because Donahoos doesnt take plastic.

are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to
investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding
liens that may exist on this property by contacting the
county recorder's office or a title insurance company,
either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you
should be aware that the same lender may hold more
than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown
on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more
times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court,
pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.

or other common designation, if any, shown above. The
sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the
note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount
of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the
property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is: $ 202,644.15. If the Trustee
is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful
bidders sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful
bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered
to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default
and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where
the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on
this property lien, you should understand that there are
risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will
be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing
the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest
bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for
paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned
off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You
are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and
size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorders office or a title
insurance company, either of which may charge you a
fee for this information. If you consult either of these
resources, you should be aware that the same lender may
hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this
property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than
the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the
sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date
shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or
more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or
a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about
trustee sale postponements be made available to you and
to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the
sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been
postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and
date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2016-01965-CA. Information about
postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on
the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS
STATE: All right, title, and interest conveyed to and
now held by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described
as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street
Address or other common designation of real property: 3755 Rosemead Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90032
A.P.N.: 5306-015-067 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street
address or other common designation, if any, shown
above. The sale will be made, but without covenant or
warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust.
The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable
estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of
the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is:
$ 195,949.77. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidders sole and
exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid
to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have
no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of
Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a
written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to
Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the
highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically
entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned
off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder
at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off,
before you can receive clear title to the property. You
are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and
size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorders office or a title
insurance company, either of which may charge you a
fee for this information. If you consult either of these
resources, you should be aware that the same lender may
hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this
property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE Note:
Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less
than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time
of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total
debt NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale
date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one
or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee,
or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California
Civil Code. The law requires that information about
trustee sale postponements be made available to you and
to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the
sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been
postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and
date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2016-01844-CA. Information about
postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on
the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Kam
Kwok and Shuk Y. Kwok be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE
PETITION requests authority to administer the estate

OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your
appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF
YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of
the decedent, you must file your claim with the court
and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed
by the court within the later of either (1) four months
from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the
California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date
of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your
rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an
attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY
EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court
a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of

you are considering bidding on this property lien, you
should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien,
not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a
trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free
and clear ownership of the property. You should also be
aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior
lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are
or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to
the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear
title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate
the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that
may exist on this property by contacting the county
recorders office or a title insurance company, either of
which may charge you a fee for this information. If you
consult either of these resources, you should be aware
that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage
or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE OF
TRUSTEE'S SALE Note: Because the Beneficiary re-

serves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it
is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may
be less than the total debt NOTICE TO PROPERTY
OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may
be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g
of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made
available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those
not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your
sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the
rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet
Web site http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2016-01099CA. Information about postponements that are very short
in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled
sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone
information or on the Internet Web site. The best way
to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Western Progressive, LLC, as Trustee for

caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be
recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you
are considering bidding on this property lien, you should
understand that there are risks involved in bidding at
a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on
the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee
auction does not automatically entitle you to free and
clear ownership of the property. You should also be
aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you
are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to
investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding
liens that may exist on this property by contacting the
county recorders office or a title insurance company,
either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you
should be aware that the same lender may hold more
than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE Note: Because the
Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale
the opening bid may be less than the total debt NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date
shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or
more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or
a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civ-

il Code. The law requires that information about trustee

sale postponements be made available to you and to
the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been
postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and

about postponements that are very short in duration or
that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not
immediately be reflected in the telephone information
or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

WHAT GEOFF'S CLIENTS ARE SAYING . . .

Geoff exceeded our very high expectations in the recent sale of our property in the Claremont Village. We appreciated the
professionalism, courtesy and speed with which he shepherded the process from start to finish, keeping us fully informed throughout. It is
a pleasure to see a master at work in any field and a special pleasure when I am the direct beneficiary!
V. S. & S. S.
Geoff helped me with my recent real estate purchase and was fantastic and professional. To be honest I was a little reluctant to call him
because I thought he only services higher value homes. He didn't care what the value of the home was and he treated it like it was a million
dollar deal and was on top of every step in the process. Geoff probably didn't know it at the time, but I was preoccupied with my father in
and out of the hospital and I didn't have much time to be involved in the transaction. Geoff took care of the whole thing and was a constant
professional! I'm so glad I chose him to be my agent.
T. F. & M. F.
Geoff did an outstanding job selling our property in Upland. His attention to detail was superior. We immediately recommended that our
son list another Upland property with Geoff as a result of our satisfaction with the service provided.
S. C. & O. C.
All along the way, from the search, to offer, to escrow, to closing, the process was smooth and painless. We were informed all along the
way of what to expect and when. I cannot recommend Geoff Hamill highly enough. He is a professional who has years of knowledge he
generously shares.
J. S. & A. C.
