Logging into the serial (craft) port

The MALC unit provides an out-of-band RS232 D serial (craft) interface for
managing the unit. To access the serial port:

Connect a straight through cable to the serial craft port on the Uplink
card.

Configure your terminal interface software with the following settings:

9600bps

8 data bits

Tip: The system automatically logs you out after a period of

inactivity. The default logout time is 10 minutes, but can be changed
with the timeout command. Refer to the Zhone CLI Reference Guide
for information on the timeout command.

Activating cards
By default, all slot cards (except primary Uplink cards) are not enabled.

Configuring ATM parameters

Changing the following ATM parameters require system reboots to take
effect.

Changing the ATM VPI/VCI ranges or configuring VP switching.

Changing allowable PCR or SCR values for traffic descriptors.

Changing the Uplink card bandwidth allocated to ATM service categories

To reduce the number of system reboots required when configuring your

device, you may want to make any necessary changes to these settings at the
same time.

MALC Quick Start

Configuring PCR and SCR values (optional)

View the atm-vcl-param profile.
zSH> get atm-vcl-param 0
vcl-rate-param1: --> {38}
vcl-rate-param2: --> {76}

vcl-rate-param14: -> {37736}
vcl-rate-param15: -> {106133}
vcl-rate-param16: -> {365567}

The following values in ATM traffic descriptors must match a value in this
profile:

The SCR for all traffic (except UBR) using the atmClpTaggingScrCdvt
traffic descriptor

The PCR for all traffic (except UBR) traffic using the
atmClpTransparentNoScr or atmNoClpNoScrCdvt traffic descriptors.

Note the following about the values in this profile:

Rates are in cells per second (CPS)

Duplicate rates are not permitted

Rates must be in ascending order

If you need to modify the profile, use the update command.

Modifying VPI/VCI ranges (optional)

Changes to the VPI/VCI ranges are on a per-port basis. It is recommended
that you plan your usage of VPI/VCIs carefully and make all the changes
required when you first configure your system in order to minimize system
reboots.
Note: You only need to create VPI profiles if you are changing the
default VPI/VCI ranges or if you are creating VP-switched
connections.

Configuring DS3/E3 interfaces

Note: For redundant systems, configure the DS3/E3 interfaces on
both the active and standby cards.
When the DS3 card starts up, it creates four ds3-profiles. To view the DS3s
on the system, use the list command:
zSH> list ds3-profile
ds3-profile 1-1-2-0/ds3
ds3-profile 1-1-3-0/ds3
ds3-profile 1-1-4-0/ds3
ds3-profile 1-1-5-0/ds3
4 entries found.

Activating the DS3 interface

Update the if-translate record for the DS3 interface to enable the line.
The if-translate record uses an index in the form shelf-slot-port-subport/
type.
The following example activates the first DS3 interface on the slot card
located in shelf 1 slot 1:
zSH> update if-translate 1-1-1-0/ds3

Configuring OC3-c/STM1 interfaces

Note: For short distance connections, you may need to add
attenuation to the OC3-c/STM1 interface.
To view the OC-3c/STM1 interfaces on the system, use the list command:
zSH> list sonet-profile
sonet-profile 1-1-1-0/sonet
sonet-profile 1-1-2-0/sonet

To display the default sonet-profile for an interface, use the get command and
specify the shelf-slot-port-subport/type of the interface. For example:
zSH> get sonet-profile 1-1-1-0/sonet
medium-type: -----------------> {sonet}:
medium-line-coding: ----------> {sonetmediumnrz}:
medium-line-type: ------------> {sonetshortsinglemode}:

If you need to make changes to the default configuration, use the update
command.

Enable the SONET interface

By default, the OC3-c/STM1 interface is inactive. During maintenance, or if
the port is not in use, the SONET interface should be in the down state.
The following example enables the SONET interface in shelf 1, slot 1,
port 1:
zSH> update if-translate 1-1-1-0/sonet
Please provide the following: [q]uit.
ifIndex: ----------> {12}:

Clocking
Configure eligible clock sources in system-clock-profiles. If there are
multiple active interfaces configured as eligible clock sources, the system
selects a clock source based on the weight configured in the
system-clock-profile. If a primary clock source has been configured in the
system profile, this clock source overrides all other clocks.
Note the following information about redundant clock sources on the MALC:

By default, interfaces are not eligible to provide clock.

The clock source with the highest weight becomes the primary clock
source. Weights are from 1 (lowest priority) to 10 (highest priority).

Set all redundant clock sources to loop timing.

In this example, the OC3-c/STM1 interface is providing system clock. (If you
a DS1 interface to provide clock, update the ds1-profile and set
transmit-clock-source to looptiming.)
For each interface you want to be eligible to provide system clock, update the
system-clock-profile:
zSH> list system-clock-profile
system-clock-profile 1-1-1-0/sonet
system-clock-profile 1-1-2-0/sonet
