APPAREL TRAINING & DESIGN CENTRE

Welcome to the
APPAREL TRAINING & DESIGN CENTRE
The ATDC was set-up in 1996 by the leading export council AEPC sponsored by the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of
India in response to the felt need for technically trained personnel and shopfloor workforce for apparel sector so
that productivity and efficiency could increase beside ready availability of workforce for various levels.
In the recent years with the new strategic initiatives, ATDC has emerged as the leader in vocational training for
the Apparel Industry. With the advent of skill development initiatives in the country and the introduction of
Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS) by MoT, GOI in October 2010, ATDC was selected as Nodal Agency
on Pan India basis for implementing the Skill Development Scheme under Component-I by the Ministry of
Textiles. In the last three years, after the skill development programme commenced, ATDC's proactive efforts
through SMART Fast-Track shopfloor workforce training programmes under the ISDS there has been a visible
improvement on the ground.
From an initial strength of just 195 students trained in 1996, number of students passing out every year has risen
to over 40,000 in 2012-13 academic year. Overall about 1,32,000 students have been trained in different centres
of the ATDCs, 50,000 of them till 2008 and over 82,000 under SMART and ATDC Community Colleges over the last
3 years.
ATDC is the only organization which offers shopfloor, supervisory and managerial level trainings/courses within
the education and training eco-system i.e. SMART Training Courses for taking care of courses of 1 month to 4
month duration (Skill Level 01-03) and ATDC Vocational Institutes (Skill Level 04-07). Creation of such
comprehensive training Ecosystem has accorded a leadership position in ATDC by transforming as India's largest
vocational training provider for the apparel sector and has won UK-India Skills Forum Award in 2011, ATDC is
again the only institution in apparel sector which has set-up Training of Trainers' Academies i.e. in
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh) and Gurgaon (Haryana) for training of trainers
considering the acute shortage of qualified and well trained trainers.
Studies indicate that currently there are 3.5 crore trained workforce employed in the apparel and textiles sector
and approximately 6.16 crore trained manpower would be required by the year 2022 for both direct and indirect
jobs that include tailors, inline personnel, designers, merchandisers, quality controllers, junior and middle level
managers, etc. and ATDC has been constantly striving to infuse a new dynamism to the entire value chain of
apparel and textile sector. From ideation to innovation, from classroom to shop floor, the mission is to bring
employability especially for school dropouts and less educated youth and women from the marginalized strata
of our society, thus contributing towards realizing the goals set by the National Skills Mission.
Advancing forward on the agenda to 'Target, Train, Transform' using both short term & long term courses, ATDC
aims to shape a stronger growth trajectory for the apparel industry and to strengthen ATDC by a two pronged
strategy of consolidating and raising the bar of the quality for the short-term courses under ISDS, MOT, GOI
(ATDC-SMART) along with a renewed focus on longer-term courses in conjunction with Skill Development
Initiative Scheme, DGE&T/NCVT through the 'ATDC Vocational Institutes'.

01

APPAREL TRAINING & DESIGN CENTRE

ATDC
Vocational Institute
ATDC Vocational Institutes are a vital part of the vocational training system for careers in apparel,
fashion and textile leading to award of Certificate, Diploma and Advance Diploma by ATDC and
certification through National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT), DGET, Ministry of Labour &
Employment to provide the key production and quality related personnel to the Apparel Industry.
ATDC Vocational Institutes portray an important role in ushering in a positive contribution to the
apparel export manufacturing industry which has been facing acute shortage of skilled workforce and
technical personnel with demand for trained professionals' far outstripping supply. It is the only
organization which offers shopfloor, supervisory and managerial level trainings/courses within the
education and training eco-system.

02

ATDC by taking proactive steps developed innovative curricula for the Apparel-Textile-Fashion sectors
and also aligned its courses with the Modular Employable Skills (MES) scheme under the Skill
Development Initiative Scheme (SDIS) promoted by Directorate General of Employment & Training
(DGE&T), Ministry of Labour & Employment as well as curricula for Fashion Design, Textile Design,
Apparel Manufacturing and Fashion Management for AICTE under NVEQF.
With focus on employability, especially for school dropouts and less educated youth, ATDC
Vocational Institutes gives a new direction and thrust to skill development in the labour-intensive
apparel sector that operates in a globally competitive environment. The curricula is comprehensive
and based on core subjects going beyond just academic knowledge but also facilitating development
of concepts, ideas and skills besides providing the much needed fee support to the learner.
Also, digital learning and soft skills are now being integrated as part of skill training programmes at all
ATDC Vocational Institutes. ATDC Vocational Institutes mainstreams vocational education and offer
modularity, lateral and vertical mobility with focus on 'employability and flexibility with different
inputs being acquired by the students for different level of certification to join the 'fibre to fashion'
value chain.

APPAREL TRAINING & DESIGN CENTRE

MESSAGE
Chairman, AEPC, ATDC & IAM

ATDC has built a

unique position
as a quality
education &
training provider
for apparel
sector

Over 2 decades, ATDC has built a unique position as a quality education & training provider for
apparel sector especially the junior and middle level managers and supervisory cadre and in the
recent years has emerged as the largest Vocational Training Provider with a leading position in
the vocational education space. ATDC has set up over 200 ATDC Vocational Institutes/ATDC
Centres/ATDC Skill Camps and 3 Training of Trainer's Academy to address the current shortage
of talent and skill faced by apparel sector and also to improve the quality of training.
The apparel and textile value chain together provide the biggest employment opportunity in
India. It has the potential to absorb over 50 million workers over the next decade. ATDC, India's
largest vocational training network for the apparel sector understanding the estimated
requirement of 9-10 million people by 2022, is now expanding its reach from fibre to fashion
and concept to consumer by adding new need based training courses and product specialty
courses. We have been constantly striving to infuse a new dynamism to the entire value chain of
the apparel and textile sectors. With a plan to take the ATDC to another level in terms of quality
relevance, teaching and innovation, we moved toward the two key skill and education councils
of India; AICTE & DGET and reengineered the apparel-textile-fashion courses based on the
present demands of the industry. The setting up of two curricula committees by AICTE to begin
with and later by NCVT under the Chairmanship of DG & CEO, ATDC has only brought
recognition to ATDC but also provided an opportunity to align the ATDC Courses going forward
with MES of NCVT by transforming most of ATDCs as VTP and also with AICTE by moving for
registration of select ATDCs as SKP. ATDC has aligned with NCVT for both long-term and shortterm courses so that the courses are affordable to a large cross section of our society which
specifically requires gainful wage employment and opportunity for self employment and also
providing appropriate certification and employability.
The career prospects of students of ATDC Vocational Institutes will be very bright helping the
individuals and families to have a better quality life while helping the export & domestic apparel
manufacturing industries to scale new heights in the time to come.
Sh. Virender Uppal
Chairman, AEPC, ATDC & IAM

MESSAGE
Vice Chairman, ATDC
ATDC Vocational Training Network having presence in over 85 cities & 23 states across India and
having trained over 52,000 candidates in the year 2011-12 & 2012-13 through 27 Hubs, 28
Centres & 145 Skill Camps has surely contributed towards providing trained and highly skilled
manpower for the shop floor, supervisory and junior managerial levels in the domestic as well
as export manufacturing units in India. The pan-India network of 200 ATDC Vocational
Institutes/ATDC Centres/ATDC Skill Camps have developed a capacity to train about 40,00045,000 candidates in a year, providing 7-8 cycles of batches are mobilized on the ground. For
mobilizing support and gap financing ATDC entered into multiple collaborative partnerships
with Central/State Organizations, State Government and other agencies. ATDCs key initiative
and recognition of its courses by National Council of Vocational Training, DGET, GOI and AICTE is
certain to provide the learner with much needed financial assistance as well as proper
certification. The focus is not only on training in numbers but ensuring the quality of training
through improved infrastructure, technically qualified trainers, consistency in teaching through
Digital Contents, trainers'/trainees' manual etc.
I do believe that ATDCs role in providing trained workforce with the industry relevant and vetted
curricula and focused trainers certainly help in improving the competitiveness of the Indian
Apparel Industry apart from improving the socio-economic fabric of society.

MESSAGE
Director General & CEO (ATDC & IAM)

ATDCs newly
developed long-term
training courses
address critical
knowledge and skillsets required for the
apparel sector, to
make the candidates
'Industry- Ready' right
from the start.

08

ATDCs proactive efforts through SMART Fast-Track shopfloor work-force

training courses, setting-up of ATDC-SMART Training of Trainer's
Academies, setting-up of state-of-the-art infrastructure, introduction of
industry relevant technologies for training programmes, advanced
pedagogy, use of digital contents for blended learning and the ATDC-JUKI
Innovation Centre and a series of such initiatives over the past three years
or so have all played an important role in placing ATDC in the forefront
among Vocational Training Institutes in the country apart from providing
both shopfloor workforce and supervisory cadre personnel to the apparel
industry.
Having set up over 200 ATDC Vocational Institutes/Centres/Skills Camps
with a capacity to train over 45,000 candidates per year, in an effort to
standardise the knowledge and skills imparted to people being trained for
jobs in the apparel sector, ATDC has undertaken development of
standardized curricula/course contents. The 2 regulatory bodies of the
Government of India guiding the entire education and training sectorAICTE and DGE&T have approved the curricula document which attempt
to attract more youth towards the sector, apart from giving an impetus to
the upgradation of design and technology. The curricula approved by
AICTE and DGE&T were released by Dr. Kavuru Sambasiva Rao, Hon'ble
Union Minister of Textile and subsequently a special module for knitwear
training has also been prepared and released. In case of AICTE, the
streams for which the curricula have been developed are Fashion Design,
Textile Design, Apparel Manufacturing and Fashion Management with
both Skill & Knowledge content. As far as NCVT is concerned, the new
curricula have recast the earlier MES modules for Garment and Fashion
sector by incorporation of industry developments and employability
criteria. ATDCs newly developed long-term training courses address
critical knowledge and skill-sets required for the apparel sector, to make
the candidates 'Industry-Ready' right from the start. I am sure that the
ATDC Vocational Institute courses leading to Certificate Diploma and
Advance Diploma with dual certification of ATDC and NCVT and with full
backing of both export and domestic garment industries assure 100%
placement assistance to potential students. With well trained faculty
members, upgraded curricula and improved infrastructure, ATDCs are
accessible all across the country in metros, urban and semi-urban areas,
making it easy for desiring candidates to pursue education in a
comfortable manner in state-of-the-art infrastructure standards in
apparel education.
I earnestly suggest all the youth to look at the several positive aspects of
the growing apparel industry and join ATDCs to obtain the right skills and
qualifications to have a fruitful career in fashion, apparel and lifestyle
industry.

Alumni Speaks
Ms Mallika Dey, Diploma in Apparel Manufacturing Technology from ATDC
Kolkata
I feel the kind of exposure I got from ATDC is phenomenal, which is not only limited to the
boundaries of academics but much beyond that. ATDC provided me the best technical and
practical skills. The faculty and the experts from the industry contributed positively to the
learning at ATDC. After the completion of my course I got campus placement and currently I'm
working with Sabyasachi as Production Assistant. I'm grateful to ATDC for their invaluable
support.

Mr.Bhargav Joshi & Mr.Chintan Makwana, Certificate in Apparel

Pattern Making from ATDC Surat
After we completed our course at ATDC Surat, we decided to start off with our own
venture. ATDC not only imparted us the technical knowledge but also supported us with
this dream of ours. The faculty guided us all through in setting up our enterprise, Shree
Maruti Creation. Thanks to ATDC we are successfully running our unit since two years
now and cater to the needs of domestic market with our product specialization in kurtis
and sarees.

Mr. Ravikant Sekhar, Advance Diploma in Fashion Design from ATDC Patna
I was from a financially weak background and had lack of self-confidence,and then my friend
told me about ATDC. Here I explored a variety of subjects while gaining in-depth theoretical and
practical understanding. The faculty always gave me immense opportunity to learn, grow and
experiment with my creativity. While I was pursuing my final semester, I got selected during
campus placement by a Bahrain based company, Must Garments. I would like to show my
gratitude to all my mentors at ATDC for providing a rock solid foundation for my career.

Mr. Kamal Arora, Diploma in Apparel Manufacturing Technology from ATDC

Okhla
I will always be grateful to ATDC, my alma mater, for guiding and inspiring me to achieve great
heights. Like any other ordinary student, I was willing to do some course which would help me
earn for my family. I had absolutely no idea about the Apparel industry. But, the exposure I got
here was not only limited to the confines of theoretical teaching instead industry relevant
practical exposure. After completing my course I was appointed by Orient Craft, through campus
selection as Process Control Auditor. The concept, rational and logical thinking developed during
the course is helping me perform confidently on projects and assignments I am a part of.

Ms Deepika, Certificate in Production Supervision & Quality Control from

ATDC Rohini
At ATDC apart from the classroom teaching, I had the opportunity to go on field trips which really
boosted my confidence. The interaction sessions with experts from the industry also helped me
to understand the current market situation and trends. I feel proud to say that it was only
because of the learning and guidance that I received at ATDC I could get placed through campus
recruitments at Cottin Fab, Rohini as a Sampling Coordinator.
