Preparing for Lesson Development

1. What does your pre-assessment observation indicate about your
students needs and current performance and educational needs?
Based on questions asked, students could not clearly state the cycle of a
butterfly and its different stages. They were unclear and could not define
words like larva, pupa, metamorphosis and other similar words were.
2. How will you design the lesson to meet the needs of all learners in
your classroom? To meet the needs of all learners, I will use both an over
head/ elmo for clear visual pictures and notes. I will give worksheets that
have large font so students will be able to clearly identify material. Give
students time to complete the worksheets and activity. I will also use a
microphone/ hearing amplifyer to speak loud and clear for all students to
hear.
Lesson Plan Development
Lesson Title: Butterfly Life Cycle
Common Core and/or State Standard: 1.4 use models that illustrate simple concepts
and compare those models to the actual phenomenon. 3.3 describe and use models that
trace the life cycles of different plants and animals and discuss how they differ from species
to species.

Lesson Objective: Students will be able to

identify the cycle of a butterfly and how to
sequence the different stages.

Assessment of Learning:
Assessment will be based on
observation, discussions, Clickers,
the padlet project and butterfly story.

Assessment of Learning:
Assessment will be based on
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to
observation and discussion and
clearly define the butterfly vocabulary words.

Anticipatory Set: Read the book, From Caterpillar to

Butterfly by Dr Gerald Legg to introduce and peak student
interst about the butterfly cycle. After reading the book,
disuss and answer questions that students may have. Some
questions you may ask your students to create thinking
are:
Do you know what a butterfly is?
Where you could find butterflies?
What do they look like?
What season do you usually see them in?

Teacher Impt: The teacher will introduce the butterfly life

cycle. . Talk about and look at the different kinds of
butterflies and introduce these vocabulary words:
eggs -Female butterflies lay many eggs during their short
life to insure that even a small number of these eggs will
survive. The eggs are usually laid in a protected location
on or near the plants that the soon-to-be caterpillar will eat.
Most eggs are attached to the plant with a fast-drying gluelike chemical that the female butterfly secretes along with
the egg.
caterpillarsCaterpillars (butterfly larva) hatch from eggs.the
larva of a butterfly or moth, having a segmented wormlike
body with three pairs of true legs and several pairs of
leglike appendages. Caterpillars may be hairy, have
warning coloration, or be colored to resemble their
surroundings
chrysalis: The hard outer case of this, especially after
being discarded.A preparatory or transitional state.
metamorphosis: (in an insect or amphibian) the process of
transformation from an immature form to an adult form in
two or more distinct stages or a change of the form or
nature of a thing or person into a completely different one.
Life Cycle in order:

Egg - A butterfly starts its life as an egg.

Larva - The larva (caterpillar) hatches from an egg

and eats leaves or flowers almost constantly. The
caterpillar molts (loses its old skin) many times as it grows.

Pupa - It turns into a pupa (chrysalis); this is a

resting stage.

Adult - A beautiful, flying adult emerges. There is no
growth during this stage. This adult will continue the cycle
and reproduce.

Check For Understanding:Using the interactive whitebard
and the classroom respoonse systm (clickers), have
students answer questions about the vocabulary and life
cycle of a butterfly. Reinforce the life cycle concept and
answer questions they may have answered incorrectly.
Collect the dataand determine if futurther instruction is
needed.

Guided Practice: Students will thenwill have time use the

iPads. During this time, students will independentlyuse
Educreations (or anyother creating/drawing app) to draw,
lable and describe each stip of the Life Cycle of a butterfly.
Once student are finished they then will link their work to
Padlet. Padlet can be used as a way for students to post
questions and or response to other students or the teacher.
As the teacher, wonder the room, answering, observing and
helping anyone who may need it. Create discussions and
questions to students to futurther assess their
understanding about the butterfly life cycle. Don't forget to
answer any questions that may pop up on Padlet too. This
could take several day if needed (differentation).
Independent Practice: After student have a good
understanding about the butterfly life cycle, student will
create a story about a butterfly. This story can be about
anything but must contain the butterfly life cycle. Students
can use paper and pencil, chatterpix (tell the story orally,
powtoon or anyother type of presentation tool that has
been taught. Once students have finished, students will
share their stories to the class.
