Overview
FREECORP V1.0 is a simple corrosion model, strongly rooted in theory, which has been
developed exclusively based on public knowledge. Currently, this model is capable of predicting uniform
corrosion of carbon steel at a single point in an environment containing carbon dioxide, acetic acid,
oxygen, and/or hydrogen sulfide. Iron carbonate film formation, a key factor in carbon dioxide
corrosion, is simulated using an empirical correlation to improve the accuracy of corrosion rate
prediction. Contributions to corrosion of various corrosion species can be calculated, which enables the
exploration of dominant corrosion species in the corrosion process. Furthermore, polarization curves for
each individual electrochemical reaction, total cathodic and anodic reactions and polarization sweeps
can be optionally displayed. In a case of hydrogen sulfide corrosion, film formation is calculated and
concentration profile of H2S across mass transfer layers on steel surface is displayed.
FREECORP is a user friendly Excel add-in which allows rapid corrosion prediction calculation and
display of the dominant corrosion mechanism. The program determines the dominant mechanism and
displays its graph.

Prerequisites
FREECORP is an Excel Add-In which means that in order to run FREECORP Microsoft Excel must
be installed on the users computer. FREECORP currently (v1.007) is only available in 32-bit and
therefore will not work with 64-bit Microsoft Office. As of version 1.007 the add-in will only work in
Microsoft Excel 2003, Excel 2007, and Excel 2010 32-bit (Am I running 32 or 64?). If you have met these
prerequisite criteria, you may download and install FREECORP.

The zip file contains four files:

After download completes, extract all files onto your hard disk to a permanent location. The location
may be either in users documents or in users Excel Add-in default location. In both cases the files will
be extracted into FREECORP folder under the folder of your choice. Once you have extracted the
contents of the zip file to a permanent location you may move on to installation of the add-in.

Installation
FREECORP is a Microsoft Excel Add-In which means the installation process is not a simple click
to install but instead is a step by step process that depends upon which version of Excel you are running.
Below you will find step by step instructions on how to install FREECORP for Excel 2003, Excel 2007, and
Excel 2010. Please note that Excel 2010 comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions and FREECORP only
works in 32-bit so please check if you are running 32 or 64.

Open a new Excel Workbook

Click Tools menu, then click Add-Ins.
Click Browse, and then locate the add-in
In the Add-Ins available box, Check the check box next to the FREECORP Add-In, then click OK.
The add-ins menu should now contain FREECORP, click it and choose Point Model
FREECORP should now start at the main parameter input window

Click on the Microsoft Office Button, then click Excel Options and then Add Ins
Select Manage: Excel Add-Ins then Click Go (at the bottom of the page)
Click Browse, then browse to the location of where you extracted the FREECORP zip file and
choose the FREECORP.xla file
If Excel asks Copy FREECORP.xla to the Add-Ins folder? Click No.
Click OK.
The top ribbon menu should now contain a tab called Add-Ins, select it.
Then choose FREECORP -> Point Model.
FREECORP should now start at the main parameter input window.

Select Manage: Excel Add-Ins then Click Go (at the bottom of the page)
Click Browse, then browse to the location of where you extracted the FREECORP zip file and
choose the FREECORP.xla file
Click OK.

Ignore the Cant find project or file, Click OK.
Click OK for the References window.
The top ribbon menu should now contain a tab called Add-Ins, select it.
Then choose FREECORP -> Point Model.
FREECORP should now start at the main parameter input window.

Troubleshooting
XlHairline Issue
A known issue with FREECORP can occur due to the installation of a particular windows
update (KB268744). This will make the add-in throw an error and go into debug mode without
the program executing properly.
This issue can be fixed by running the fix found here:
http://www.corrosioncenter.ohiou.edu/software/freecorp/Freecorp_xlHairline_Fix.zip
Run the Freecorp_Fix_KB2687441.exe as Administrator to fix the issue. The step by step
explanation of the issue as well as how to fix it is included in the zip file above.

Am I running 32-bit or 64-bit Office?

Office 2003
Office 2003 is only available in 32-bit.
Office 2007
Office 2007 is only available in 32-bit.
Office 2010
Office 2010 introduces the File tab and the Microsoft Office Backstage view. The
following shows Word 2010.
