Criterion #2: Data Collection and Analysis

Standards:

SS.1.C.2.1: Explain the rights and responsibilities students have in the school

community.
SS.1.C.2.2: Describe the characteristics of responsible in the school

community.
SS.1.C.3.1: Explain how decisions can be made or how conflicts might be
resolved in fair and just ways.

Objective:
Students will be able to explain the important of voting and participate in a mock
election.
I Can Statement
I can explain the importance of voting.

Assessment Tool:
Pre- and Post- Assessment: Before teaching my connected lessons, I
administered the pre-assessment to the students that consist of true and false
questions and one short response. At the end of the two lessons, I gave them the
same sheet as a post-assessment to see how their understanding of the subject
improved.

Data and Results

I conducted this pre and post assessment in a 1st grade class of 19 students. Here are the results of
both:

This pie chart and the supporting table shows that in the pre-assessment, 32% percent of
my class (6 students) answered only one question correctly. 47% of my class (9 students)
answered two questions correctly. 11% (2 students) answered three questions correctly. 5% (1
student) answered four questions correctly, and 0% of my class answered 5 or six questions
correctly. This data showed me that the students had little to no knowledge on the topic of voting
and its importance to the community.

This is the pie chart of the data I gathered on the post-assessment I administered to my students.
It showed me great improvement in my students knowledge of voting. 42% of the class (6
students) answered 8 questions correctly. 32% of the class (6 students) answered five questions
correctly. 16% of the class (3 students) answered four questions correctly. 5% of the class (1
student) answered three questions correctly, and another 5% of the class answered one question
correctly. Zero students answered zero questions correctly.

Reflection
1) How is the assessment tool appropriate to determine student learning needs and aligned with
the learning objective?

a) Explain the rights and responsibilities students have in the school

community- The assessment that I used helped me address this standard
with many of the questions that it asked. One of the main reasons is
question number six. This question asks Why should I vote. Although this
question seemed irrelevant to the students during the pre-assessment,
students had the opportunity to learn how they have a responsibility to vote
once they reach the age. They also had the responsibility to vote during the
lesson for their favorite cookie. This made the concept of voting relevant to
their classroom community and their interests.

2) What do students know and what are they able to do?

a) The students in my class had tremendous growth in between assessments. I feel that this
in part due to the fact that they were able to participate in an election themselves. .) My
objective for this lesson was students will be able to explain the important of voting and
participate in a mock election. This helped them connect the vocabulary they were
learning (candidates, ballot, election, etc.) to a real life situation (participating in an
election for their class cookie.)
(FEAP1d, FEAP 4b)
3) How will you differentiate this lesson based on student need?
a) According to the data that I collected, there was still one student who did not make any
progress from the pre-assessment to the post assessment. This student is in the process of
being tested for ESE services. I believe that I can differentiate with him by giving him the

assessment on the computer. He is not a fan of writing, but does not have a problem with
typing. He did not even attempt question number six on both assessments. Using the
computer may be a simple solution to this motivation problem that he is showing.
(FEAP 3c),
4) Explain the ways the assessment selected will/could meet the needs of ELLS
a) Currently, the assessment tool does not meet the needs of ELLS. This was not and issue
in the classroom that I conducted my lesson in, but if I were to conduct a lesson again, I
will change the assessment. Some ways that I could do this is by providing the students
with a copy in their language and ask them to write their answers in English to the best of
their ability. I can also provide them with a translations of a few words that they may
have trouble with instead of translating the entire assessment. (ESOL 5.1)
