[ow-Bay
lnclustrial Areas

The trend to low-bay facilities in industry

has created some interesting
challenges in terms of providing
adequate energy-ef ficient illumination.
The characteristics of the optics for
ce:ling heights o' 12 ta 25 fi. are unique.
Assembly areas, warehouses with low

ceilings and narrow aisles, assembly

lines with close-in walls, modular wal
systems with open-top office or lab
areas are on y a few of the challenges to
be met by low-bay lighting systems.
GE developed a serles of lightjng

systems specifically designed

for low-bay areas.
Each is configured around
energy-efficient HID lamps.
Each offers advantages for a particular
application.

General Electric
Lowmount'o

luminaire
system

The General Electric answer to the

low-bay lighting challenge is the
Lowmount industrial system specifically
designed to be used where betier light
controi is needed. lt incorporates the
performance features demanded by
ef ficiency-minded management.
The scientifically designed optical
assemb y of the Lowmount system
reduces glare while provlding horizontal
light control and beam spread. lt directs
light on both vertical and horizontal work
surfaces with fewer uminaires and less
wasted energy than with other lighting
systems. A charcoal filtered optical
assembly and A zak'Jinished reflector
help maintain system efficiency and
minimize maintenance costs. A two
piece mounting and bushing nut, factory
prew rjng, and a quick disconnect
between the ba last housing and optical
assembly that assures dead socket
amping for safety in Lowmount 400
models, help minimize installation costs

nt

and labor.

The Lowmount 400 luminaire is

designed for 250- or 400-watt HID
lamps. lt is ideal for factories, foundries,
text le mills, assembly areas, or any
lndustrial application where good
honzontal beam spread and vertical
surface illumination is desired.
The Lowmount 150 system is designed for
the lower wattage lamps yet offers the
sare qJa ity ard optical pe.formalce
features as Lowmount 400 lumlnai
It s an excellent systen.r for
wareh ouses and storage areas.

bonuses of qreater reliability, fewer
luminaires, and longer periods between
relamping and cleaning. Lineglow
luminaires provide low-glare lighting
through the interfacing of two reflectors.

1 High maintained lighting ef frciency is

important to assembly line productivity.

So GE designed the Lineglow luminaire
to withstand the rigors of industrial
atmosphere: sealed and filtered optics
that stay clean between lamp changes;
rugged steel housing, electrocoated
inside and out; and ALGLAS@ reflector
finish to help cut maintenance. And
every Lineglow luminaire is completely
prewired at the factory with leads
terminating in the easy-access junction
box for easy installation.

Lineglow systems are designed to

provide low-glare, multi-point
illumination to help improve productivity
and reduce work errors. Recommended
for assembly line at mounting heights of

The Unimount system can help reduce
energy consumption through better use
of generated light by employing an

H gh bay industrial facilties present a

unique problem of getting sufficient

lurnination on work surfaces from
umina re mounting heights of 20 to 100
feet. With proper beam controi and
more efficient I ght sources, fewer
lum naires and ower wattage lamps are
repded be' d-be no5l o'thc ight is
directed to the work surface.
Another cha lenge is the environment
found rn many industries. The air oflen
contains fumes, oil vapor. moisture, and
dust, all of which tend to impalr the
opt ca performance of the lighting
system. Since the system is norma iy
mounted at substantial heights, t rs
difficult to service and may often go
unattended unt la lamp fai s.
General Electflc provides both energy
eff ciency and maintained llumination
efflciency with its high-bay lighting
systems. Just as factory condrtions
vary, so do iighting needs and GE offers
a complete family of energy-efficient
and long-life light ng systems for
high bay industr a applications.

General
Electric
filterglow@

luminaire
systems
The Filterglow lighting system is the "no
compromise" solution to high-bay
lighting. lt incorporates advanced
lighting technology, sophisticated
design, and important energy
conservation features. This is the high
bay system that GE designed
specifically for areas where grime,
lumes. and dirt mighl limit the ef ficiency
of a lighting system. The enclosed and
gasketed optical assembly has an
activated charcoal filter that is designed
to remove airborne particles and gases
befo'e tley conta"ninate the precisionengineered ALGLASJinished ref lector
surfaces. The reflector is carefully
designed to direct light onto work
surfaces. Payback in terms of reduced
energy and less maintenance costs can
be expected in one to three years.
Filterglow systems are among the
easiest to install. The mechanical
connection is made in the two-piece nut
and bushing that goes up first. The
heavier ballast assembly simply rotates
into place wrthout tools. A large wiring
compartment with a teathered cover
facilitates electrical hook up. And, the
optical assembly simply slides into
place completing the mechanical and
electrical hookups in one step.
Filterglow systems offer superb energy
efficiency through the use of Lucalox,

metal-halide, and mercury lamps.They

The Durag ow lighting system is a
companion in quality and performance
to the Filterglow system; but in an open

especially applicable in areas such as
hangars, warehouses, assemblyplants,
maintenance facilities, or garages,
anywhere the atmosphere is reasonably
free of arrborne contar'rinants. This
system may also be appiied where
continuous luminaire operation assures
a chimney effect (air movement caused
by hear',sing lro.n theramp) minimizes
the settling of contaminants on reflector
surfaces. These luminaires will operate

performance
GE

Each element of a General Electric

lighting system makes a specific
contribution to the total perlormance
of that system. This can only be
accomplished when all elements are

considered simultaneously at the

desjgn stage. lt means, too, that the
designer/engineer team maintain total
control of the engineering and
specifying of luminaire components to
assure that GE luminaires meet the
highest performance criteria.
Experience has a lot to do with success
in lighting. For over'100 years General
Electric has blazed a trail oJ innovations
to lead the industry to higher lighting
pertormance standards.
This is the legacy of the GE Lighting

Systems Department.
Here are some of the high perlormance
leatures found in many ol our lighting
systems. Reler to the Luminaire
Selection Guide to determine which
systems offer these features.

Charcoal-filtered
opticals cut maintenance,
increase elficiency
1.

Activated charcoai filters help

keep your GE iightlng systems
clean inside so you don't have
to. Thats because the air
entering the optical assembly
passes through the filter whlch
traps most airborne
contaminants. This is important
in industrial environments
which are often filled with oil
vapors, fumes, dust, and
moisture because dirty
reflectors can cut system light
output by 16% to 26% between
lamp chanqes.

2. Computer-designed

refractors squeeze more

uselul light out of every
watt
Getting the most illumination for
every dollar is a challenge well
met by Lucalox lamps.But
through GE refractor
technology we put more of that
light where you can use it more
productively. At the same time
we are able to control glare and
surface brightness.

3. Special socket design

maintains lamp life

HID lamps need positive,
metal-to-metai contact between
lamp and socket. Any corrosion
between the lamp and contact
can create arcing and heal
build-up that can shorten lamp
life. All General Electric HID
lighting systems employ a
specially designed socket
having a spring-loaded center
contact and split-ring shellto
insure positive contact betlveen
lamp and socket.

4. ALGLAS-and Alzak-

finished rellectors stay

clean, won't corrode
A glass-coated surface is more
reflective and more impervious
to corrosion than bare metal. So
we chemically bond a thin layer
of glass to both sides ot
polished aluminum to create the
patented ALGLAS refiector
finish. The result s a lght,
durable, rei ective surface that

10

has been sclentifically formed

into shapes that direct light
away from the lamp and onto
work surfaces. lt is resistant to
corrosive elements and easy to
clean. Therefore, you get more
illumination from the system.

The Alzak-coating on most GE

outdoor and some indoor
lighting sytems is applied by a
controlled oxidation process. lt
is a hiqhlv reflective and durable
surface that is easy to clean.

5. GE design makes

installation and
maintenance simpler
and safer
Lightweight, two-piece
mounting nut and bushing
assembly goes up lirst and the
heavier ballast assembly then
twists into p ace.
Roomy wlring compartment
w th captive cover makes wiring
easy. Extra lonq leads let
installers do most wrring outsrde
the luminarre.

Quick electncal disconnect

between ballast and optical
assemblies lets you attach
optical assembly after heavler
ballast is lnstalled.
A screwdriver is the only tool
you'll need (if any)to change a
lamp or ballast. lt's fast and
easy for anyone.

6. Adiustable socket

matches light patterns

to mounting height
Accommodatjons for mounting
luminaires in a plant may not
always be where you want
them. With some lighting
systems, that might create light
dispersion problems. GE
solves this by providing an
adjustable socket that lets you
adjust luminaire spacing{omounting height ratios wjth a
screwdriver even after the
system is in place.

The Testing ancl Analysis

behincl the UL844 listing
At General Electric Lighting Systems Department, UL844 listed hazardous
location and adverse location lighting systems are subjected to brutal tests to
assure their conformance with UL standards. Once UL standards are met, UL
representatives monitor procedures at the facility for initiai compliance. ln
addition, UL requjres periodic component testing to insure day-after-day
conformance with the original strict criteria. lf any change in design or
configuration is made, the product must undergo the same top-to-bottom
scrutiny required at the outset.
Few organizations have the capability to factory{est luminaires in compliance
with Underwriters' Laboratories. General Electric has that capability. We
routinely blanket luminaires with dust, subject them to extreme high and low
temperature fluctuations, vibrate them for over 4,000,000 cycles, and spray
them with water thats directed under pressure at joints and openings.
Furthermore, Class l, Division 1 luminaires are filled with highly potent gas or
vapor mixtures that are exploded. The units are then subjected to high internal
hydrostatic pressures. The net result is a line oI luminaires designed to match the
extraordinary requirements of hazardous and adverse locations.

Hydrostatic tests are performed on

Class l, Division 1 luminaires to insure
that they will withstand four tirnes the
maximum pressure observed in
explosion trials. These tests are
continued after UL listing is obtained
to maintain high quality in all
component parts.

4. Photometric Analysis
The purpose of hazardous ocation
lighting is, after all, to provide
illumination. So we are as careful
about the photometrics of these

and each design variation is
measured by a un que photometer

These tests insure that measured

temperatures at critical points do not

hazardous location applications. ln
each test, more than 40
thermocouples measure the
temperatures of components,
including bal ast, capacitor, lamp,
qlobe, housing, and gaskets.

Outcloor
lnclustrid Areas

Providing safe, elficient outdoor lighting

involves much more than just mounting
a number of lights on poles. lt demands
a balance between adequate
illumination and economical operation.
Optical systems must be designed and
. precisely manufactured to give
predictable patterns on the surfaces to
be lighted. The system should be
energy efficient from a practical and
public image point of view
Other factors in lighting outdoor areas
are glare and light intrusion bleyond your
facilities. For example. fence lines
should be illuminated sufficiently to
discourage vandalism and
unauthorized entry or to permit closed
circuit TV or visual surveillance yet keep
stray light away from adjacent areas.
Well lighted parking areas are important
to safety as well as worker morale.

Outdoor work areas and storage

Iacilities must be kept bright enough to
support high productivity and minimize
accidents.
The General Electric systems approach
to lighting could hardly be more evident
than in the outdoor lighting systems we
lurnish to industry. We provide a variety
of systems designed to give maximum
lighting efficiency and control through a
scientific blending of optical systems
with Lucalox, metal-halide or mercury

metal-halide or mercury lamps.

General Electric
High Mast
lighting systems
GE high mast lighting systems provide
specific advantages in lighting large
outdoor areas using Lucalox or
metal-halide lamps. With a high mast
system you can normally use fewer
poles and fewer luminaires than with
conventional lighting systems. You can
get more illumination with less glare.
and light intrusion into adjacent areas.

GE service hoists permit easy

maintenance. Hoists are customassembled to meet a customer's
specific lighting and power
requirements. Pole heights range from
60 to 140 feet.
Parking Iots, outdoor work yards,
storage areas, perimeters, and
recreation areas are typical

applications.
The GE X209 high mast luminaire is
available with either open or closed
and filtered optical assemblies with
symmetrical or asymmetrical
distribution. ALGLAS-coated precision
formed reflectors maintain long lile and
help produce uniform light distribution

patterns.

When determining the

specificaiions for a high

system, be sure that the bailast
is specified for constant lumen
output throughout the life of an
HPS lamp. And for optimum

life
Because high pressure sodium lighting
is truly a system, each component
should be carefully designed to
enhance the system. This is especially
true oflhe ballast. A ballast designed for
a Lucalox lamp should provide the lamp
with a steady power supply to help
assure continued high lumen output and
long lamp life.
Theoretically, an HPS light source is an
arc that will carry unlimited current.
unlike a lilament lamp which will burn up
if too much current is applied. However,
overcurrent operatlon of HID sources
seriously reduces lamp life. Also, the
voltage across an HPS arc tube rises
with age even if the line voltage remains
constant.
These lacts underscore high pressure
sodium lamps as dynamic light sources,
which means HPS ballasts must
manage lamp operation throughout the
lile of the lamp.
General Electric designs and builds
three types of ballasts-reactor,
regulator and Steadilux-for HPS
lighting systems. The best of these three
basic types is the Steadilux electronic
ballast. lt uses solid-state components
and a feedback loop which continuously
measures lamp volts and current. The
conlrol circuit monitors the data and
controls the lamp wattage within
predetermined levels depending on the
data. The Steadilux ballast achieves a
117. regulation ol lamp watts even if line
voltage varies r107. with the resull that
lamp lumens remain nearly constant
throughout lamplile. (See volvwatt
trace).

Specifying the
Volt/Watt Trace
Regardless of which ballast type
is specified, it is important to

specify it according to the

lampmakers Volt/Watt trace for
the designated lamp. The lamp's
Volt/Watt trace takes the form of
a trapezoid (above) with the
vertical dimension defining lamp
wattage or lamp lumen output
and the horizontal dimension
defining lamp operating voltage
which increases with age. The
area inside the trapezoid is the
design tolerance for the lamp.

The three dotted curves

represent the high-line voltage
variant (top), low-line voltage
variant (bottom) and nominal line
voltage (center). When any of
these lines stray outside the

trapezoid, the ballast is not

providing proper regulation tor
the lamp.
Some ballasts such as Steadilux
(solid curve) can accommodate
greater line voltage variations
with little effecton the inputto the
lamp. This factor can be highly
important in lamp pertormance
over life and merits consideration
whenever specifying HPS
liqhting systems.
