Five things should be considered in the selection of

roadway lighting equipment-whether it is for streets,
highways, shopping centers, or parking lots. These five
criteria should be used as a measurement to determine
if a proper return is being received on your investment:
(

1) The performance of the equipment to give you

rire and production ot lisnt

(2) Reliability of the highest degree since the cost

of cleaning, relamping, and maintenance can often run
ten to twenty times the initial cost of the equipment.
(3) Ease of installation and maintenance since this
area represents one-third to one-half the original cost.
(4) Pleasing appearance since most lighting system
components are constantly on public display.
(5)

Service by the manufacturer and his field representatives that helps you do your job better.

It is in these five areas that General Electric's Preferred Lighting Program will be of value to you and
your operation. But, the Preferred Lighting Program
goes further than just these factors. This program means
improved performance and service to you because of
these added features:
(

1) A clear, concise product line is listed in

this

(2) Prompt shipment is made on all items in the

Preferred Lighting product listing. The program is
designed to deliver your order quickly after you place
it. Modernized manufacturing procedures and service
routines give you the finest service possible on your
orders.

(3) Easy lighting layouts save you much of the time

formerly spent engineering lighting layouts. General
Electric application engineers have made up simple,

easy-to-follow recommendations in this catalog. The

reason-to save you from spending the time to engineer
and lay out each individual installation.
We believe this work can be extremely helpful to the
veteran street lighting engineer, the man who deals daily
with many types of lighting equipment. We know it can
be of invaluable aid to the engineer who deals only oc_
casionally with roadway lighting,

All

are in accordance with the

American Standard Practice for street and highway
lighting as prepared by the Illuminating Engineering
Society. Maintenance factors for lamps and luminaires

are included in all charts and recommendations. Lamps,

luminaires, brackets, and poles are pre_matched, saving
both selection time and the possible embarrassment and
extra costs when cornponents do not function satisfac_

torily together.

(4) Improved information on the design, installation,

and maintenance of street lighting systems is possible
because the General Electric representative who calls
on you can, in most cases, answer specific questions about
these products rather than having to check with the
factory. Many of your questions will be answered in
this catalog.
(5) Easeof specifying and ordering is a decided asset
to you with the Preferred Lighting program. Look for
your particular application in this catalog, select the
equipment recommended, and send your order to your

catalog is divided into three sections: Section 1: Application Guide Chart; Section 2: Application Data; and
Section 3: Product Data. First, using Section 1 : Application Guide Chart (below), classify the street or area to
be lighted. Then, turn to the page designated in Section
2: Application Data for the best recommendations to
do your job. These recommendations are picked from
many possibilities among the full line of systems. The
choices are based on two criteria: (1) customer preference as measured by purchases; and (2) best lighting

After you have selected the recommendations for
your job, proceed with the third step. Turn to Section 3:

rurol ond suburbon homes ond streets

O(
"Private lighting," the term given by many to the practice of
renting individual streetJighting units to private home and
property owners, has met with wide acceptance in recent
years. Among the biggest users of this service-which generally consists of a flat monthly rate for equipment, maintenance, and energy-are suburban homes, farmsteads, and
streets in suburban developments. These individuals or groups
of individuals want the protection from vandals, criminals,
and pranksters and the added beauty that lighting can provide. Farm users also enjoy the added work hours and protection for livestock that lighting after dark gives. Generally,

175-watt mercury units

or

6000-lumen filament units are

used for these applications.

rurol ond suburbon commerciol oreos

Even more recently, another market has proved to be a

popular one. Private businesses and off-street areas not
normally served by municipal street lighting want and need
light to operate safely and efhciently at night. These areas
include service stations, motels, grocery and other stores,

school and church yards, recreation areas, parking lots, and

drive-in restaurants and theaters. Lighting at night provides
safety and convenience to users of these areas. Businessmen
know that a well-lighted establishment at night is inviting and
attracts customers. In most cases, larger luminaires, 400-watt
mercury or six-foot fluorescent, are used in these applications'

Optical assemblies for use with filament lamps are divided

into three groups: spun-sealed, rolier-latch, and open.
In the spun-sealed optical assembly, the lip of the formed
aluminum reflector is spun around the edge of the glassware.

This keeps the highly-specular reflecting surface clean-blocks

entrance of bugs, dirt, and other foreign material. This design
protects the refractor lens edge from chipping-reduces glassware breakage. The precision-designed refractor lens directs
the light where desired.

The roller-latch optical assembly allows easy one-hand

operation for relamping or cleaning. The globe ring holding
the refractor lens is hinged, and swings open by releasing

the spring-loaded roller latch. The optical assembly snaps

shut easily. Glassware can be lifted off the hinge. This optical assembly features the same precision-designed refractor lens as the spun-sealed design.
General Electric's open optical assembly features the industry's first acrylic refractor lens, which is shatter-resistant
and one-fourth the weight of comparable glass refractors.
Stones and BBs bounce ofr; .22 bullets will penetrate but not

shatter the refractor lens. Precisely-molded prisms produce a

soft, "jewel-like" glitter. Its light weight makes installation
quick and easy. It is designed for 2500- to 6000-lumen filament lamp operation.

This modern, standardized line of mercury luminaires features

outstanding photometric performance, high electrical ef6ciency, wide flexibility, and low installation and maintenance
costs. Mercury lamps of all types-175-1000 watts-are effrciently operated in these new luminaires. The precisely-

contoured reflector and prismatic refractor lens give optimum

light output and control. General Electric's built-in "PowerPack" ballasts, available in all wattages and all voltages, provide exceptionally low watts loss. IES distribution Types II,
III, and lV ca.t be selected by simple adjustment of the
adjustable socket without changing refractors. The slipfitter

mounts on either l1/z-

or 2-inch brackets. "Power

Pack"

unitized construction combines optical assembly, ballast, and

photoelectric control into one unit. The convenient terminal
board facilitates wiring connections. The M-250 unit is available with a shatter-resistant acrylic refractor lens.

Form 2508 is a durable luminaire featuring a one-piece reflector-housing of anodized alclad aluminum. Although designed to opeiate 100-, 175- or 250-watt mercury lamps, this
,r.rit *ith the 175-watt mercury lamp is recgmmended as the
most practical and economical.
Highly-specuiar reflecting surface and precision-design
refractor combine to provide a maximum light output and
controlled light pattern on the roadway.
To facilitate accessibility to the luminaire, the hinged'
cast aluminum refractor-holder is locked in place by a toggle
latch. The cast aluminum slipfitter is equipped with three
cup-pointed bolts for leveling and securing luminaire to the
mounting bracket.
Available with receptacle for locking-type photoelectric
control, the unitized "Power Pack" design of this luminaire
combines optical assembly, ballast, and control into one unit.

Featuring a shatter-resistant open acrylic refractor lens, the

industry's first, General Electric's Acrylic-Suburban luminaire
is designed to operate 175-watt mercury lamps. Virtually unbreakable in normal service, the new acrylic refractor lens
resists thermal shock, is unaffected by corrosive atmosphere
or blowing sand, and is interchangeable with glass refractor
lenses of similar design. BBs and rocks bounce off; .22 bullets penetrate, but will not shatter the refractor lens'
The luminaire is a complete operating package, The General Electric cadmium-sulphide photoelectric control locks
on top of the hood in the EEI-NEMA standard receptacle.
Built-in long-life 17S-watt ballast in hood effrciently operates
lamps. The precision-molded refractor lens glitters when the
lamp is operating, giving off a soft, pleasing light'
The light-weight, shatter-resistant refractor lens makes installation easy, reduces maintenance calls to replace broken
glassware.

3: PR0DUCT DATA- lightins control equipment

Both series and multiple circuits are used in street and highway lighting today with an increasing trend to."'rard the use ol
multiple equipment. Frequently, the type of circuit used for

series circuit

a street-lighting system is predetermined by local conditions.

Where there is a choice as to the type of circuit, a number
of factors should be considered.

Individual components of the series substation, such as the

primary oil switch, open-circuit protector, and constant-curient transformer, are listed on the following pages. Photoelectric control provides automatic operation from dusk to

HIGH VOLTAGE FEEDER

dawn.

Mercury luminaires may be used with either integral ballasts or separate ballasts mounted in the pole transformer
base or aerially.

Series filament lamps are used in series luminaires with

integral film cutouts to bypass the lamp after burnout' Series
filament lamps may be used in multiple luminaires when an

transformer is used

for isolation from the high-voltage

circuit.
Substation size is obtained by determining proper series
loading factors for the particular load.

lndividuol photoelectric control-the most popular circuit used

today is the nominal 120-volt multiple circuit due to its heavy
utilization in both residential and commercial areas. In many
cases. the voltage will be obtained from a 120/240 volt or a
120/208 volt distribution system.
Where 110-125 volt service is available, individual photoelectric control is recommended especially along residential
and traffrc streets. With this type of control each luminaire is
switched independently by an integrally-mounted photoelectric control. Ballasts for fluorescent and mercury lamps are
usually contained within the luminaire'

oluminum pole

wood-pole mounting brocket

Where the utilitarian wood pole is already

in use along a street for power distribution,

and where it is expected that wood poles

will remain for a number of years, it may
be sound economics to mount the streetlighting equipment on the same pole. Wood
pole brackets are listed below, offering the
six-foot length, proven the most popular.

Aluminum poles-light weight, require

poured concrete base (see note, page 26),

no painting necessary, can be installed on

foundation without a hoist; higher original
cost but lower weight, low maintenance.
