Parent Meetings

I was given the opportunity to sit in on several parent/teacher meetings. It was

great getting to see how both the parents and teachers collaborated to create a
plan that would suit the needs of the child. I was impressed with how smoothly
these went. Below, is a list of parent/teacher meetings that I attended.

Regular meeting. Sam struggles with
interest in school. He has plans of quitting
once hes old enough and become a
professional fisherman. His mother is worried
about his grades and that he will fall behind.
She also asked how she could engage him.
Teachers plan to incorporate topics of Sams
interest (fishing) into instruction to peak his
interest. Also, they plan to talk with Sam
about accountability.
Regular meeting. At the time of this
meeting, Jaython had been suspended from
school for three days for fighting. He has
behavioral issues. Mother wants a full-time
aid for Jaython, but teachers think that he just
needs better discipline. Per the elementary
counselor, Jaythons misbehavior got him out
of class work. Mother seemed to be defeated.
Teachers planned to hold Jaython accountable
for his actions, and decided that he was not to
walk the halls without supervision.
This meeting was conducted through a
conference call with the mother. The mother
was concerned because of the troubles she
had with Jensen and completing homework.
She spoke about how the entire house would
be in an uproar because it was such a battle.
We were shocked by this. Jensen was always
quiet in class and worked hard. She was
doing well in her classes. A set of books
would be sent home to ensure that Jensen
could study.
This was an IEP meeting. Ryan is a gifted
child with behavioral disabilities. He is highly
intelligent, but struggles with social
interaction. He wants his space, but does not

know how to properly ask for this. Mostly, this

meeting allowed teachers to inform parents of
Ryans behavior at school. Together, they
decided to leave Ryans IEP as it was.
Regular meeting. Teachers discussed
Remis behavior in and out of class with his
parents. They discussed his grades, and
informed her of any work that he needed to
complete. Overall, Remi was doing well with
school better than he had in elementary.
This meeting was held because Skylar had
been having seizures. She has a medical
condition where one side of her brain has
grown larger than the other. Her mother, no
doubt, was worried about her keeping up in
her classes. She also wanted to inform
Skylars teachers about her medical issues.
They created a plan to follow if Skylar had a
seizure while at school.
This is the only child in the first grade that
I attended a meeting for. Her mother came in
because she was struggling with Sophia doing
her homework. She said that on some days,
she would work hard and do great. Other
days, she struggled. It was decided that she
may be seeking attention from her mother
(being the middle of three) and that they
would give it some time. Both the parent and
the teacher decided to keep a record of
Sophias behavior to see if there are any
patterns to it.
