Assignment 2
Part 2: Subject Headings Search
These cards are designed to be printed and laminated for student reference near our
student work stations in the Media Center. Since efficient searching is part of Media instruction,
these cards would serve as a reminder to students, or as a resource to students new to our
building learning Destiny. This first set is designed for our elementary library users:

of your log in!
Click on Internet Explorer.

Go to Favorites and find Destiny.

Find Robert Moton.

Click the Visual tab to browse using pictures:

Youll see the main Library Search Page:

This will bring you to a page of subjects. What are
you looking for?

Assignment 2

To search by Keyword, select the Basic tab:

To do a keyword search for Minecraft books, make

sure youre spelling your search term accurately:

Keyword searches describe the topic youre looking

for in one or two words. Destiny will return any
results that have the exact word or words you
searched for. Spelling counts!

Searching for this one keyword will return ALL of the

books we have that have the word Minecraft.
Remember, Minecraft as a keyword returns only
results on this specific game!

Assignment 2

To do a keyword search for Maryland, you can

search for the name of our state:

To search Destiny by Subject, youll still use the

basic tab, but the subject button:

Searching for this term will return any listing we have

with the word Maryland. Thats 86 materials to look
through!
Remember to check for availability of books here!

Subject searches pull together materials related to

a specific topic. This is helpful if you know what
subject youre interested in.

Search Station Reminders

The following search reminders will help you to most efficiently find the
information you need from our Destiny Library Catalog. Remember, if youve
tried all of these strategies, and still cant find what you need, find Mrs.
Brewer for help. Were here to guide you!

To access our catalog, log in from home or school and click on the Catalog
tab at the top of the page:

There are two ways to search our Catalog: Keyword and Subject. Both can
help you find what you need.
A keyword search is
best if you know
exactly the word or
words you want to find,
but not a larger
subject. Heres an
example to find
information on
President Obama. It
shows only the
material with that exact keyword.
You may actually want information on the President, as an officer of the US
Government. You could use the Subject link at the top of the page to see

more information in this

subject area.
A subject search is
best if you want a
variety of materials
specific to your topic.

Heres another example:

Keyword Search:
Plant Biotechnology
This very specific
keyword returned only
5 results. This may be
what you want!

After looking through some titles from my keyword search, I found the
subject of Agricultural Sciences.

Assignment 2

This subject may have

more related information
that my keyword search
missed.
Effective searching can
require returning to
adjust your search
several times. Here are
some general search
tips:
Be ready to try a variety of words, phrases, and synonyms for your
search. Dont give up if you dont see what you want on the first try!
It is easier to start broad, and then refine your search terms. Where
else might this information be?
Remember our Boolean operators: AND, OR, NOT. These can help
narrow your search.
Dont hesitate in asking for help! Were here to help you find what you
need!
