The 21st Century of Teachers and Learners

Today, information and communications

technologies (ICTs) infiltrate classrooms
around the world at an exceedingly rapid pace.
In the wake of this influx, educators face
growing challenges as they teach a very
wired and more and more wirelessgeneration of students using technology that is
evolving every day.
Educators will help to understand and to
embrace (ICT) information communication
technologies to create better learning
environments for students. It defines 21st
century students and teachers and presents
the challenges educators face as these
students and their accompanying technology
cross the classroom threshold.
It presents solutions to help teachers
effectively meet the needs of these students
while preparing them for the 21st century
Work force.

Millenials, the current generation of

students, were born between 1980 and 2000.
Although some Millennials spend 6.5 hours
each day saturated in print, electronic, digital,
broadcast and news media. They listen to and
record music view, create and publish internet
content; play video games; watch television;
talk on mobile phones and instant message
everyday. Generally, these young people
share the following characteristics: They like to
be in control, like choice, group-oriented and
social, They are inclusive, practiced users of
digital technology, think differently, more likely
to take risks, value time off because they view
life as uncertain.
Through its research, the National
Education Association has determined todays
the 21st century teachers are generally female,
43 years old and married. They are more
educated and experienced than teachers of the
past; more than half hold advanced degrees
and have15 years or more of experience. And,
of course, these teachers are seeing their work
and their classrooms transform as they
improve their lessons and teaching using
technology. Generally, todays educators also
share the following characteristics; they may
resist learning about new technology, coming
from the Baby Boom generation and somewhat
reluctant to adopt new technology too quickly,
some educators feel intimidated by students
knowledge of tools they do not understand.
They work in environments where professional
development is under-emphasized and
undervalued by their employers. They need
support and planning time, New technology
takes them out of their comfort zones. The
classroom has changed since Millenials began
moving through todays school systems.
Curricula evolve, and new teaching
methodologies are developed to reach this
generation of students. The 21st century
teachers must to face the challenges of

teaching millennials. The learning must be

relevant to students. Learning means more
when Millennials understand practical
application for the information they receive.
Content must be specific, concise and fast.
Millennials are hungry for information and will
search for it on their own if teachers do not
present what they perceive to be relevant.
Because so much information is constantly
available. Millennials do not feel they need to
learn everything immediately. Instead, they
want to be taught how and where to find they
need when they need it.
Bago City College where the researcher is
serving for 21 years already facing this
challenge and demands of the 21st century
teachers to possess skills which the concept
is motivated by the belief that teaching
students most relevant, useful, in-demand and
universally applicable skills should be
prioritized in todays school.
The researcher believes that teaching
millenials must continuously learn to discover
things, analyse and synthesize information
and find ways to improve and cope with the
demands of the 21st century. Thus, the
researcher were encourage to conduct the
21st Century Teachers and Learners_____.
The findings of this study may be used to
encourage teachers to be Learner-Centered,
Classroom and Personalized Instructions,
Students as Producers, Learn New
Technologies, to be global, collaborate,
connected and innovative to make teaching
more challenging and interesting.

Statement of the
Problem and
Hypotheses

The study aims to determine the level of

competences of 21st Century of the three City
Colleges:
Bago City, Bacolod City and
Lacarlota City, Negros Occidental. Base on the
findings of the study a teacher development
action plan will be proposed.
Specifically, the study seeks to answer the
following questions:
a. What is the profile of the 21 st century
respondents?
b. What is the level of development of the
competences of the 21st century teachers?
c. What is the level of development of the
skills of the 21st century learners.
d. Is there a significant relationship between
a.
Profile and development competences
of the teachers in the 21st century and
level of development of the learners.
e. Is there a significant difference on the level
of development of the 21st century of the
learner
as
perceive
by
researcher
respondents between colleges.
f. Is there a significant relationship in the
development of the skills of 21 st century
learners as perceive by the learner
themselves and immediate teachers.
g. Is there a significant difference of
development of the teachers of the
competences 21st century teachers and the
learner when they are group according to
colleges.
h. What are the opportunities and challenges
perceive by the research respondents on
the development of competence and skills
of the 21st century teachers and learners.
i. What is the action plan?
