I. Executive Summary
WeworkedwiththeCarpenterLibraryatWakeForestUniversitySchoolof
Medicinetodetermineiftherewereanydiscrepanciesbetweenwherethelibraryis
currentlyperformingandwherethelibraryneedsandwantstobeperformingand,ifso,
whatwouldbethebestcourseofactiontoclosethatgap.Ourcontactatthelibrarywas
DavidStewart,AssociateDirectorforPublicServices.Wechosetocompletethisneeds
assessmentforCarpenterLibraryafteronememberofourgroupinterviewedMr.Stewart
foranotherassignmentanddeterminedtherewasaneedandanopportunitytohelpthe
librarywiththeirplansforgrowth.ThelibrarystatesthatitsmissionistoPromote
Health,Research,andEducation(CarpenterLibrary,2015)andtheirvisionfor
accomplishingthismissionistheLibrarywillmaintainacompetentandwellmotivated
staffdedicatedtopromotinghealthandcuringdisease,provideappropriateinformation
resourcesandaccesstotheseresources,developandconducteducationalprograms,and
serveasacatalystintheinformation/clientinterface(CarpenterLibrary,2015)With
thesethoughtsinmind,wedevelopedourneedsassessmenttoassistthelibrarywith
reachingtheirgoal.
ThesameteammemberwhohadoriginallyinterviewedMr.Stewartcontacted
himagainandhegavehisapprovaloftheassessment.Healsoprovideduswithasample
questionnairehehaddevelopedthatfocusedonwhatisneededforthenewlibrarythey
areplanning.Hetoldushewouldpreferthatourassessmentfocusontheneedsofthe
currentlibrary.Wecreatedacustomersatisfactionsurveyfollowingtheguidelineswe

hadbeenprovided.Afteraroundofrevisions,thissurveywasapprovedbytheDeanof
theMedicalSchoolandfromtheresharedwiththelibrarystaffandstudents.Responses
tothesurveycameinquicklyandwesoonhadover500.Thisfact,coupledwiththe
responseswereceivedfromaninpersoninterviewwithtwostudentsofthemedical
school,leadustobelievethatourneedsassessmentwasgoingtobeabletoidentifyareas
wherethelibrarycouldimproveitsserviceswhileshowingthevalueofitsexisting
servicesandresources.
Afteranalyzingthedatathatwecollectedfromoursurveyresponses,wewere
abletoidentifyafewareaswheretheCarpenterLibrarycanmakechangesor
improvementstoincreasecustomersatisfaction.Thoseareasareasfollows:provide
accesstomoresubscriptionbasedelectronicjournals,extendthelibrarysoperating
hours,increasevisibilityoflibraryserviceswithbetterpromotion,andoffermorespace,
invaryingstyles,forstudy.Webelievethat,basedonthecollecteddata,these
recommendationswillleadtoincreasedpatronageandincreasedawarenessofCarpenter
Librarysservices.Althoughourassessmentwasbasedononlythecurrentlibraryandits
serviceswebelieveitwillalsoprovebeneficialtotheUniversityintheirplanstoopena
secondbranch.

II. Introduction
WakeForestUniversityandBaptistMedicalCenterarelocatedinWinston
Salem,NorthCarolina.WinstonSalemhasapopulationofapproximately234,349(US
CensusBureau,2013).Thecityhasarichhistoryofsupportinginstitutionsofhigher

educationandishometoWakeForestUniversity,WinstonSalemStateUniversity,
SalemCollege,UniversityofNorthCarolinaSchooloftheArtsaswellasForsyth
TechnicalCommunityCollege.WinstonSalemisinForsythCounty,inthePiedmont
TriadregionofNorthCarolina,andisthefourthlargestcityinNorthCarolina(US
CensusBureau,2013).
FromtheschoolswebsitewelearnedthatWakeForestUniversityhasa
combinedGraduateandprofessionalschoolsenrollmentof2,779,slightlymorethanone
thirdofthetotalWFUenrollmentof7,591.Studentsenrolledinthemedicalprogramat
WakeForestSchoolofMedicine(WFSM)areledbyDeanEdwardAbrahamandtaught
bynearly1,100fulltimefacultymembersand550parttimeteachers.Thegoalsof
WFSMremainthesameastheywerein1902,theyeartheSchoolofMedicinewas
founded:teachingexcellenceinclinicalmedicine,promotingstrongclinicalandbasic
research,renderingexemplarypatientcareandstressingservicetothecommunity.Each
July,120studentsareenrolledinthefirstyearclass(WakeForest,2015).
Atfirstglance,thecustomerbaseofCarpenterLibraryappearstobeonesizefits
all,however,inrealitythecustomerbaseandtheirneedsaremorediversethan
expected.Inadditiontothemedicalstudentgraduateandpostdocresearchfellows,
studentsinthePhysicianAssistantprogramarealsoincludedintheregularcustomer
baseofCarpenterLibrary.TheCarpenterLibraryalsosupportstheNursing,Physical
TherapyandrelatedtrainingprogramsofWinstonSalemStateUniversityandForsyth
TechnicalCommunityCollegeandsupportsthesignificantresearchpublishingactivities
ofthepostdocandfulltimeresearchfaculty(Ruskai,2015).

CarpenterLibraryscollectionsincludeprintandelectronicpublications.Thelast
publishedholdingcountsforthecollectioninclude142,240volumesand4,822periodical
andserialsubscriptions(CarpenterLibrary,2013).AssociateDirector,DavidStewart,
workscloselywithCarpenterstaff,WFUfaculty,researchersandstudentstoensurethe
mostappropriateprintandelectronicmaterialsareavailable.CarpenterLibraryandits
staffsupportawiderangeofstudents,practicingphysicians,medicalresearchersaswell
asthepatientsofBMC.TwentytwofulltimetrainedlibrariansandSnuffy,atherapy
dog,supportthismission.Eightofthe22librariansatCarpenterholdeitherMLSor
MLISdegrees(Ruskai,2015).

III. Methods
BecausetheCarpenterlibraryisarestrictedaccessfacility,thesurveygathered
datafromaveryspecificgroupofindividuals,ratherthanthegeneralpublic.The
libraryscustomersconsistlargelyofthefaculty,staffandvariousgroupsofstudents
attendingclassesatWakeForestanditspartnerschools.Theseuserscanbebroadly
groupedintofourcategories:faculty,student,researcher,andstaffmember.Itwas
anticipatedthateachofthesegroupswouldhavespecificwaystheyusethelibraryand
specificinformationalneedsaswell.Demographicinformationbeyondthis
categorization,suchasdataregardinggenderorethnicitywasnotcollectedforthe
purposeofthisneedsassessment,asthisinformationwasdeemedoflittleorno
significancetothelibrary.

TheneedsassessmentprojectbeganwiththeinterviewofDavidStewart,
AssociateDirectorforPublicServicesattheLibrarybyoneofthegroupsmembers.
Duringtheinterview,Mr.Stewartsharedhisvisionforthelibrary,explainedsome
upcomingchangestotheprogram,andexpressedsomeoftheinformationhewantedto
beabletogatherwiththisassessment.Additionally,twofourthyearmedicalstudents
participatedinaninformalinterview,byoneofthegroupsmembers.
ExpandingonaroughdraftofasurveythatMr.Stewartandthelibrarystaffhad
beenpreparingandtheinformationhehadsharedduringhisinterview,thegroup
createdacustomersatisfactionsurvey.Afterthisinitialsurveywascreated,twogroup
representativesmetwithMr.Stewarttoreviewinpersonanddiscussanyneeded
changestotheassessmenttool.Duringthismeeting,thepossibilityofdoinginperson
interviewsatthelibrarywasproposed,butultimatelydecidedagainstduetothe
schedulingchallengesofthegroupandtheuniquepopulationofthelibrary.
ThechangessuggestedatthismeetingofthegroupandMr.Stewartweremade
andthesurveyformwascreatedusingGoogleforms,andresubmittedforapproval
anddistribution.OncethesurveywasapprovedbybothMr.Stewartandthelibrarys
director,itwasthensubmittedtotheDeanoftheMedicalSchool.Afterafinalreview
bytheDean,thesurveywasthendistributedfromhisofficeviaemailtothestaffand
thentotheirstudents.

IV. Results

502librarypatronsrespondedtothesurvey.MostoftherespondentswereWake
ForestSchoolofMedicine(WFSM)Facultyat263(52.4%).99respondentsfromthe
MedicalSchoolactuallyrepresentedahighresponserateastheenteringclassto
WFSMin2014wasonly120students.Thus,theresponseratewasover20%ofthe
population.WFSMislimitedto64PAstudentsbyitsaccreditationstandards,andso
hadaresponserateofatleast27%forthispopulation.

librarypatronageofthesespecificpopulations.

Mostindividualsaccessprintmaterialsandthelibrarycatalogeithersometimesor
never,thetwolowestresponses.However,respondentsstilldisplayedalargedegreeof
engagementasmostaccessedelectronicjournalsdailyorweekly.

However,patronsarestilllargelydrawntothelibrarybytheuseofstudyspace,evenso,
thisisstillasubstantialopportunityforimprovementforattractingpatronstothelibrary

byprovidingmoregroupworkandmeetingspace,whichwasthemostcitedareathat
wouldmostenhancetheirexperiencewiththelibrary.

TheCarpenterLibraryisseekingtoexpandtoanewbranchthatwillservetheCRNA
students,thePAstudents,andthefirstandsecondyearMDstudents.Theresultswere
disaggregatedbythepatronswhowouldcontinuetobeservedatthecurrentbranchand
thosewhowouldbeservedatthenewbranchtodeterminehowthisshouldaffect
strategicandoperationaldecisionsforthetwoplannedbranches.

V. Conclusion & Recommendations


Thefeedbackregardingthelibraryscurrentlocationwillnotonlyimprove
services,butassiststaffmembersastheUniversityplanstoopenasecondbranch.
Afterexaminingtheresultsofthesurvey,thereareafewmajorrecommendationsfor
thelibrarytoconsider.Thefirstrecommendationistoincreasethenumberofelectronic
journalsubscriptions.Thisisapopularandfrequentlyusedresourceandnumerous

libraryusersrequestedaccesstomoretitles.Thesecondrecommendationforthelibrary
istoextendoperatinghours.Severaluserswouldlikelongerhoursovertheweekendto
studyandprepareforexams.Anotherrecommendationforthelibraryistoincrease
promotionforitservices.Manyofthelibraryscurrentservicesareeitherunderutilized
orunknowntousers.Promotingtheseservicesthroughthelibraryswebsiteorother
outreachinitiativeswouldincreasevisibility.Afinalsuggestiontothelibrarywouldbe
toexpandthestudyspacesinthelibrary.Quiteafewusersmentionedhavingadditional
spacewouldbebeneficial,additionalgroupstudyareas,andsomeevensuggested
havingstandingdesksavailableforuse.
