EEE 325 CONTROL SYSTEMS (FALL 2016)

(Instructor: Dr. Ali Arshad)
Assignment # 01 (14-11-2016), Due Date: 20-11-2016
Total Marks: 150
Q. No. 1. Consider the following figure representing a linear DC machine. When switch is closed
at t = 0 sec, the conducting rod experiences a force: Find = ilB (where i, l and B are current (A),
length of the conducting rod (m) and magnetic flux density (T) respectively) towards right and
moves with displacement x(t) on a frictionless surface. When the conducting rod moves an emf:
eind = vBl (where v = dx/dt is the velocity of the conducting rod) is induced. The conducting rod
has mass: m=10kg (Marks: 100, CLO2 [C5])

a. Derive the mathematical model of the above machine (A differential equation

representing a dynamic relationship between the mechanical output x(t) and the electrical
input VB )
b. Develop a transfer function: X(s)/VB(s) using the differential equation developed in part
(a)
c. Simulate the system developed in part (a), using MATLAB or Simulink, with VB = 120v,
R = 0.3 , l = 10 m and B = 0.1 T. The conducting rod is initially at rest. Also plot the
following figures (the labels and axis of the plots should be properly mentioned and
readable, otherwise the marks will be deducted)

Q. No. 2. Consider the following figure representing a linear DC motor. Repeat part (c) of Q. No.
1 with Fload = 10N. Assume that the initial velocity (dx/dt at t =0 s) is VB/(Bl) and initial
displacement is 100 m (Marks: 50, CLO2 [C5])
