CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Introduction

This chapter presents the general procedure in the conduct of the study. It
encompasses the research design, locale of the study, respondents of the
research, methods of the research used, instrumentation, data gathering
procedure, and data collection tool utilized during in the conduction of the study.

Research Design

The research employs a descriptive method since the researchers aim to

describe and to discuss the effects of the use of leisure time of selected
sophomore students with their academic performance. This method is described
as a process of gathering, analyzing, classifying, and tabulating about prevailing
conditions, trends, processes and then making adequate and accurate
interpretation about such data (Calderon and Sanchez, 1995). Being
cognizant of this, the descriptive method is considered appropriate for the study.

Locale of the Study

The research is conducted at University of Santo Tomas, Espana, Manila,

specifically in the College of Nursing. It offers a four (4) year course in Bachelor
of Science in Nursing (BSN). The Dean, Assoc. Prof. Susan N. Maravilla, RN,
MAN, heads the College of Nursing.
The UST College of Nursing for school year 2016-2017 of the 1 st
Semester has a total number of 435 Level II Nursing students.

Respondents

The respondents of the study were the ten (100) selected Level II Nursing
students of UST enrolled during the first semester of school year 2016-2017.
They were asked by the researchers to answer a survey form. Box 1 shows the
number of respondents from the entire population of the Level II Nursing students
by section and the number of selected nursing students to participate with the
research.

Interpretation:
The table above shows the total number of Nursing students in the
Second Level as respondents of the study out of its total population of 435.
Respondents were chosen all sections of the Level II. 10 out of 43 2NUR-1
students, 10 out of 45 2NUR-2 students, 10 out of 45 2NUR-3 students, 10 out of
44 2NUR-4 students, 10 out of 44 2NUR-5 students, 10 out of 44 2NUR-6
students, 10 out of 43 2NUR-7 students, 10 out of 43 2NUR-8 students, 10 out of
42 2NUR-9 students, 10 out of 42 2NUR-10 students compromised a total
number of 100 respondents.

Instrumentation
A survey questionnaire has been prepared for the respondents to answer.
The respondents are expected to finish in about 5-10 minutes. The questionnaire
asks what they do during their leisure time and how does it affect their studies.

Data gathering procedure

Approval
A letter will be sent to the Dean of the College of Nursing with the letter
noted by the Research Adviser or our English Professor for approval of the
research. Upon approval, the group will ask consent from the professors incharge in the different sections if we can conduct our study in their class time.
But, the researchers will try to conduct the study to students in their free time.

Conduct of Study
All eligible sophomore students of the College of Nursing will be asked to
take part in the study as respondents who will answer our questionnaires. They
will answer the questionnaires either inside the classroom or in a place that is
most convenient to them. They will be first oriented of the objectives and purpose
of the study. Also, the students will be instructed on how to answer the
questionnaires. The researchers will address all questions to be raised by the
students before starting the survey.
During the survey, the researchers will answer the questions of the
respondents and clarify the items that are unclear to them if the needs arise. The
survey is approximated to last 5-10 minutes.
After the survey will be conducted, the respondents will be reassured of the
confidentiality of their responses. Lastly, the researchers will express their
gratitude and appreciate the time the respondents gave to answer the
questionnaires.

Data collection
After the interview, the researchers will gather the data. The data that the
researchers gathered would be interpreted through the help of psychology books
and exiting theses related to the research that will help determine the effect on
how sophomore nursing students spend their leisure time on their academic
performance.
