Final Homework Heart, Vessels, Circulation, Lymphatic & Immune Systems

Due with final exam
Heart
1. Draw a box-diagram illustrating the path of blood through the heart - label all
chambers, valves, and major vessels (it does not need to be drawn anatomically
correct).

2. Describe the location of the heart and the layers of the pericardium.

3. Compare and contrast cardiac vs. skeletal muscle.

4. Draw and label the cardiac conducting system label all nodes, branches and
fibers.

5. What are the steps (in order) of signal conduction through the heart.

6. Draw and label a normal ECG.

7. Draw and label an ECG with first-degree heart block, second-degree heart block,
third-degree or complete heart block, and a heart in ventricular tachycardia.

8. What complication can occur in the heart from untreated Strep throat?

9. A friend tells you that her son had an ECG and was diagnosed with a heart
murmur. Are you convinced? Why?

10. Draw and label a typical artery vs. vein.

11. Define arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis.

12. Define aneurysm name 5 vessels where an aneurysm could be life-threatening.

13. As blood vessel diameter increases, the amount of smooth muscle decreases and
the amount of connective tissue increases. Explain why (remember Laplaces
law).

14. A patient is suffering from edema in the lower right leg. Would you suggest
massage? Why or why not?

15. A very short nurse is asked to take BP on a very tall patient. She decides to
measure the blood pressure on his L ankle while he is standing. She records a
systolic pressure of 200mmHg and diagnoses him with high blood pressure. Why
is her diagnosis correct or not correct?

16. Epinephrine causes vasodilation of blood vessels in cardiac muscle but

vasoconstriction of blood vessels in the skin. Explain why this is a beneficial
arrangement.

Hemodynamics & Lymphatic system:

1. List and describe ALL the factors that influence blood pressure.

2. For each of the following destinations, name all the arteries that a red blood cell
would encounter if it started its journey in the L ventricle:
a. Posterior interventricular artery
b. Common carotid artery
c. Tip of the finger
d. Liver

3. List and describe the functions for each type of cell in the immune system.

4. A patient has many allergies. As part of the treatment, doctors decide to try and
identify the allergen that stimulates the immune systems response. A series of
solutions, each containing an allergen are injected into the skin at different
locations on the patients back. The following results are obtained: a) at one
location, the injection site becomes red and swollen within a few minutes; b) at
another site, swelling and redness appear 2 days later; and c) nothing happens at
the other sites. Explain each observation.

5. How are lymphatic vessels different from veins? Be specific.

6. Draw and label the structure of a lymph node.

7. Describe the different nonspecific defenses in the body.

8. Describe the different specific defenses in the body.

9. What are the different forms of immunity, and how is each acquired? Give 1
specific example of each.

10. What is the difference between the MHC-I and the MHC-II proteins?

11. What are antibodies? How are they produced?

12. List and describe the 5 classes of antibodies.
